Why does the Podcast app suck the most...

Hoepfully they improve its reliability than features before it is released.

Are you serious? Sometimes I feel like people are complaining just for the sake of it... What is wrong with the Podcast.app? Its by far the best app for handling Podcast I have ever seen and is one of the things that make me cringe every time I decide to test the latest Android and Windows Phone offerings for a few weeks just to get some varied experience and to take a look at what Google and Microsoft have to offer.

Neither Android nor Windows Phone have anything that can compare to the now built-in and free Podcast.app in iOS. I have tried a lot of things as I'm listening to Podcasts daily and even paid version for a few bucks are not even close.

What more could you possibly want from such an app? It's reliable, you got some fairly good control over the various settings, it grab the latest podcasts as soon as they are available, it auto deletes podcasts you have listen to, you got sleep timers, you got the possibility to both slow down and speed up playbacks, its minimalistic and complies with all the iOS UX guidelines (obviously as it's a app developed and maintained by Apple).

The only downside would be that it can't subscribe to RSS feeds which is a downer. But as 99% of all podcasts are distributed FREE through iTunes no-one really has any excues to not have their podcast through iTunes anyways.

Unbelievable. This is the final straw. I'm switching to Android. I can't understand why Apple feels it needs to force such a stupid app on to everyone. Podcasts is such an integral experience to iOS that it needs to be a stock app? Really? Who listens to podcasts? Nobody cares. Just like Health, Newsstand, Stocks, Compass, Phone, iMessage, Maps, Passbook, Reminders, FaceTime, Safari, iBooks. No. One. Cares, Cupertino. Just amazes me why they can't put in actual useful features.

Soo.. Goodbye and good luck!

Considering 3rd party apps need to be updated by, uh, the 3rd parties, I'm sure Apple will get right on that.

To be fair I did a clean install of iOS 8 BETA1 on two iPhone 5S and two iPad Airs and on both about any kind of app has crashed quite a lot. It's not only third-party apps, but also Settings.app, Podcast.app, Phone.app, Message.app, you name it.

Due to the fact that they introduced a brand new programming language and toolkits, and they obviously have to do several "under-the-hood" enhancements in order for things like "extensions" to work these things are to be expected. But it's surely not only third-party who is to blame here.

iOS 8 BETA1 was actually the very first iOS BETA I felt forced to roll back from due to the instability of all apps and software.

Calculator app built in

What about a calculator app built into iPad? I spent more than $5 on several calculator apps, and all are either slow to load, aesthetically obtuse and all can't be access by Control Center.

Enjoy Android (well, try and enjoy Android).

I just posted on this a minute ago, get over it seriously, if it bothers you move them to the last Home screen and you'll never see them again.

Will iOS8 finally allow you to set the default web browser to any one you choose/prefer to use, like you can on any desktop computer?

Also, have Apple opened up their hidden areas so a third party web browser can be as fast as Safari ?

yeah, you switched to android over the podcasts app. riiiiight.

Nobody cares. Just like Health, Newsstand, Stocks, Compass, Phone, iMessage, Maps, Passbook, Reminders, FaceTime, Safari, iBooks. No. One. Cares, Cupertino. Just amazes me why they can't put in actual useful features.

dear lord what nonsense. imessage sends a billion messages a day, Maps is the most popular mapping app on iphone now, and tons of people like me find reminders, facetime audio, safari, etc, "useful".

Maybe you don't but my 2,000 listeners a week, and Adam Carolla, and other Podcasters really do have people who listen to Podcasts.

The Podcast app is pretty nice for those of us who consume podcasts over traditional radio.

So let me get this straight. Because you have two thousand listeners and Adam Carolla has a podcasts iOS by default should have the Podcasts app installed? Sorry, but the MacRumors groupthink suggests otherwise. You read what that one poster wrote. You've seen his likes. And the same sentiments stretches to most of the stock apps.

Frankly iOS would be better off if it came with no apps. Imagine how useful that would be.

What's this thing with pinch to tab view in Safari? Could someone explain it to me, please?

I assume it means you can pinch your fingers together on a zoomed-out Safari window to pull up the tab view, much like you can on Safari on OSX.

/sarcasm?

I love listening to Podcasts. It may not need to be a stock app, but tons of people listen to podcasts. And because tons of people listen to podcasts, I can assure you that "nobody cares" is false.

Likewise, lots of people care about Health, iMessage, Maps, Passbook, Reminders, FaceTime, Safari, and iBooks. Can you imagine buying a phone and then having to download a web browser, messaging app, and GPS software before you can do some of the basic things you bought it for? Sure, for you, me, and a lot of the people on this site that would be fine - but a vast majority of iPhones are sold to people who don't want to customize ever last detail of their phone.

You don't think that Continuity/Handoff, quick reply, wifi calling, etc. are useful features?

Well, that sucks. Deleting the Podcasts app on a regular basis has been my only way to vent my rage at it!

To some people those apps you listed are INTEGRAL to the phone, I'm included in that. I don't get how you have any legitimate excuse to leave a platform for a 10 mb app. Seriously? Lol have fun on android buddy! If you wanna talk waste of resources, explore the android world some. Just look at the specs of the phones and how they run.... Explains enough. Or even just look at how much RAM is used with their "efficient" hardware choices. You buddy, are a joke!

Btw google won't allow the free use of their most recent droid software without the inclusion of their personal software suite. On top of the apps your cell provider chooses. On top of whatever apps the manufacturers choose. So really I don't get your point. It holds nothing.

QuickType Keyboard: Apple's QuickType keyboard is now available on the iPad as well as the iPhone, but does not appear to be available on the iPad 2.

I wonder if the QuickType dictionary is rather processor or disk-intensive and the iPad 2 just can't provide the performance that is needed?

Great that they've changed the Safari redirecting things. I've been noticing that more and more lately with visiting third party sites to suddenly be shoved into the App Store to view some free app.

Hallellujah! Thank you Apple! This was really annoying when browsing some sites

This is my favorite feature coming from beta 2.

Unbelievably annoying to simply visit a website and then be kicked out of Safari without your consent

A bit miffed at Apple making the podcast app compulsory. No app should be compulsory except the ones which are needed for the basic functions of the phone. If I wanted another one of Apple's apps, I'll download it. No need to force apps on to us, Apple!

Thank you for this post. I was going to write something similar but gathered it wouldn't get into this guy's head.

Have you considered the possibility that whatever issues it has had will also be resolved? :p

That said, I don't agree with these "default" apps that can't be uninstalled. The pipeworks are already in place to reinstall any previously "owned" application, and that should apply to all default apps, with very few exceptions, such as Settings and App Store. Give the user the choice!
