You do realize the update needs to be extracted, right? It's like downloading a zipped file on your computer and you need zip file space + extracted space on your computer to be able to extract it correctly.

Of course it can be extracted on the fly. And it's even possible in case of a download error to fix those part(s) that need to be fixed.

If you try to upgrade while connected to iTunes on a Mac the installer should be smart enough to use your Mac for the extra storage space needed. The way Apple handled this is anything but user-friendly. It's about as dumb as the U2 download.

I updated my iPhone 5 and iPad Air last night while connected to iTunes. Neither device had enough free space for the OTA update. The updates went smoothly and quickly.

That's the reason I haven't updated. The 5gb requirement when most Apple devices are only 8 or 16GB(And Apple KNOWS this) seems pretty ridiculous. The person with the 8gb phone probably has to erase their entire phone for the update.

IOS 9 is going to use 30% thinner bits.

You know you can just plug your phone into your computer and update through iTunes, right? No need to delete anything unless you have like no space at all.

How wrong you are

lets be fair, a person who is not very computer literate would not understand that without it being explained

Remember that's who Apple sells to, those who just plug it in and it works for them no instructions necessary.

if you do the update plugged into your computer through iTunes you do not need the extra free space

Yes but, I had to free up over 30GB on my MBA to do the required backup that's required by doing the upgrade via iTunes and it failed 90% through the backup process because not enough space to complete backup and now I only have 15GB of free HD space. I'm just tempted to wipe the phone do the upgrade and restore from my iCloud backup. It's got to be quicker than the 4 hrs spent trying to find enough free space by deleting and temporarily removing files from devices. And to think I was sooo excited when I bought that 40MB HD for my Mac 512 or when I got the second 5MB RK05 drive for my PDP-8. Oh for the simple days past

just OTA, via iTunes the download and extraction is done on the computer

Ok so it's a bit misleading to say people are forced to chose between deleting stuff or not downloading the update. Unless there's lots of people out there who don't own a computer and don't have access to iTunes?

I am going to wait, tried list night via iTunes and it showed anywhere from five to eight hours to download. Eek! Will wait a few more days. Even the download for the Mavericks update took almost two hours.

apple: time to stop ripping us off on higher memory models.

"That's almost half the free space available on a 16 GB device, forcing many owners to decide whether to delete content from their devices or install the update. "

If apple wants to continue selling 16 GB devices, that's their business.

But to rip off their loyal customers by charging $100 to bump up the memory size by 48 GB - to 64 GB - is robbery and a money grab.

Retail price for 64 GB SD cards can be found for about $19. We all know apple's price is far less. They shouldn't charge 20 times their material cost for a memory capacity that is no longer a luxury.

Definitely felt that speed drain on campus WiFi yesterday. Also kept disconnecting. Anyway, it's kind of ridiculous that the 16GB is still the base model for the iPhone 6. Any time you upgrade you have to delete about half the stuff of your phone, lol. That's going to keep quite a few people from caring enough to install it. Hopefully not enough to significantly fragment iOS.

You are aware that there are compression and simultaneous erasing algorithms that bypass this limitation?

YOu want them start erasing what?

The Files these new files are replacing as the OS it is running?
You can sometimes change some OS files while the OS is running, but its only recommended when its a small localized change, not much point to that.
They possibly could erase files inside the original package as they unpak it, but even that would only save them 1/4 of the download (1G) and slow things down even more.

None of those solutions really "fix" the space issue in a meaningful way.

There are only two solutions, delete some stuff on your phone (not the best one for sure), do the update through Itunes (the best one).

From their point of view, they could possibly install their OS modularly in many small parts. But, the countless interactions of new code, with old code would undoubtably lead to many installation failing since they couldn't test for all those variants. So, we are back to the humongous release. Do it through Itune and there will be no issue.

Just like when companies charge more than $15k for a car, right?

Not all storage is created equal.

So far I'm not too happy with the lag on my iPad 3. Yes, I realize I have an iPad 3, but I wasn't expecting a huge drop from iOS 7.

Love the new features though.

Size requirement makes the update difficult for 8 or 16 GB devices. That's a lot of devices.

It will take time as they figure out how to remove content, or update through iTunes.

So basically iOS7 launch was just as iOS6, humm, interesting.

iOS8 looks too old and aged, Apple should release a more modern UI.

My biggest complaint is that there's no way to purge the application cache to free up space for an OTA download.

Mail.app is taking 1.5GB. I would like the option to have it purge all mail and attachments to free up space and then re-download it all.

No, it's because iOS 8 runs like crap on anything lower than an iPhone 5. iOS 8 is amazing on big screens, 3.5"...nah.

And millions of people still have a 4S.

I was in line last year with a lady with an iPhone 1 finally upgrading to the 5s.

And I know many people that only get the free phone every 2 years so they are usually 3 years behind at minimum.

They complain about it almost daily blaming it on Apple and they switch to an equivalent Free Android thinking things will change but they only develop a new set of problems in a phone environment they don't know. Now they're wanting to switch back which will put them in a 5c.
Most of these are also of the kind that think they should get the exact same phone, storage and updates as those that pay $200-800 for their phone.

I got rid of my 3 because of the unusable lag that came going from iOS 6 to 7. I can't even imagine what yet another OS has done to it. But, that's what I have an Air for.

Just upgraded my iPod touch. I couldn't upgrade via OTA, it wanted a lot more than a gig of space freed up, so I used iTunes and it was painless and quick (11 minutes beginning to end).

So, try the iTunes method if OTA wants to use too much space.

When some people spend their lives on discussion boards complaining because that is what gives their lives meaning, they often don't spend the time to think about what they they are complaining about.

8 or 16GB phones are laughable but its not Apple alone that does this anti-Micro slot hardware. With the Note being capable of a 128GB SD card anyone who wants or needs storage doesn't even have a choice anymore.

Lulz, ok so Apple purposefully built an operating system with bigger than needed files because they DON'T want people to update..?
Silly conspiracy much??
You do know that Tim LOVES bragging about adoption rates, right????
The facts don't agree with your theory.
Also, you can do it by plugging in to iTunes without deleting anything.

To those of us that are tech minded, it makes perfect sense. Obviously there has to be an operating system present to allow the download. It can't erase iOS 7 as it's downloading 8. Thus, for a brief period of time you have two operating systems present on your phone: the one currently running & the compressed one that will expand and replace your existing os after restart. Then you'll have that space back.... what's NOT to understand?

Calm down, you just know what you are dealing with when it comes to Apple and nothing will change with them. Memory upgrades with Apple have always been and will always be pricey. If you want Apple you have to expect this. But I have to say, other competitors will gouge their customers in other ways that Apple doesn't. It's push pull.
