Not exactly. Most people don't have iPhones older than the 4S and many people (myself included) with the 4S are not upgrading to iOS8 because iOS7 ran just decent enough on the 4S, plus many of us with 4S's are upgrading to the iPhone 6. iOS8 brings the 4S to a crawl according to reviewers on the internet.
That basically leaves iPhone 5/5S users upgrading to iOS8 which is a smaller amount of customers.

I installed 8 on a 4s yesterday and it has not slowed it down at all. I wanted to test it for my husband because he is not upgrading his phone.

Good thing adoption is slow. iOS 8 is a buggy POS. Did DFU restore on 64gb iPhone 5s, 128gb iPad air and 2 64gb iPad retina minis. Far worse than first iOS 7 release IMO.

Significant keyboard lag, multitouch works then doesn't, Vpn connectivity issues, random browser problems and the occasional freeze.

Anyone else notice that when you share with family it brings up EVERY iOS device you ever owned? Not reassuring when these devices were deleted from my apple profile when I sold them.

Yes, I remember you were telling about that yesterday. At least I think it was you. :). I'm just scared to bother. It's not easy (or possible) to downgrade to the older OS version. Plus I preordered an iPhone 6 Plus. I'm leaving the 4S alone.

PS, no disrespect to you but this is the internet. I can only accept a person's word with a grain of salt.

Sounds far fetched to me. I think the share of iPhones that is not eligible for the iOS 8 update is much larger than the share of devices not eligible for the iOS 7 update was last year. The iPhone 4 was much more popular than the 3GS.

Wow, that math.

But the 4s, 5 and 5s sold much more than previous iPhones! The slowly adoption rate is obvious: The 6 and 6+ aren't out yet, servers are hammered, not everybody was notified about the update, it's the middle of the week and, more importantly, they demand a lot of available space!

This time it takes planning.

Overall I'm happy with the new software on my iphone 5, I had a few freezes and sometimes my Fleksy keyboard won't load properly (if at all) but it's not all bad. I'm gonna upgrade my girlfriends 4s tonight and see how it performs.

8 or 16GB phones are laughable but its not Apple alone that does this anti-Micro slot hardware. With the Note being capable of a 128GB SD card anyone who wants or needs storage doesn't even have a choice anymore.

This problem is the ultimate proof that 16GB storage option must go. I feel sorry for those who bought 16GB version of iPhone 6/6+. It's a bigger issue than 1GB RAM size, which is a problem of its own.

"iOS requires nearly half of the space of a 16GB device to install". EXACTLY! That's why I'm so mad the iphone6 starts at 16gb. It's a real insult and hassle to users. Big mistake Apple; your flagship product shouldn't have the same storage space as 3+ years ago.

That's the reason I haven't updated. The 5gb requirement when most Apple devices are only 8 or 16GB(And Apple KNOWS this) seems pretty ridiculous. The person with the 8gb phone probably has to erase their entire phone for the update.

Guys you have to do the update via iTunes on a Mac!

Yeah my iPad mostly has the stock apps on it with pretty much nothing else and I had to delete pretty much everything else I could just to install the update.

It's beyond "dumb". I have a 16GB 5S with 3GB's free, yet I had to spend over an hour deleting Apps and photo's, lots of people aren't going to do that. Yes, after the upgrade was complete I got most of the space I had freed up back. Then I had the joy of reinstalling the Apps I had deleted.

If you try to upgrade while connected to iTunes on a Mac the installer should be smart enough to use your Mac for the extra storage space needed. The way Apple handled this is anything but user-friendly. It's about as dumb as the U2 download.

That's exactly what happens, didn't you try it? My iPad mini would not let me do it over the air, via iTunes no problem....

I thought this was the work around.....read an article that suggested people do this as it doesn't require additional space on the device.

I did a full backup to the mac via iTunes and then d/l 8 and updated the iPad 2 without having to delete any apps. No problems here.

Understood. I have a 6 being delivered tomorrow which is why I was willing to experiment on my 4s. My husband is keeping his 4s, and I'm the house techie, so I didn't want him to upgrade if it was going to become my problem!

No, it's because iOS 8 runs like crap on anything lower than an iPhone 5. iOS 8 is amazing on big screens, 3.5"...nah.

And millions of people still have a 4S.

After three years, I'm still using a 4S and I don't think I'll be upgrading to iOS8. The phone is already exibiting slower speeds, rapid battery drain, random crashes, and lots of iCloud and/or iTunes syncing issues. Don't need to introduce any more problems!

Waiting for my iPhone 6 to try out the new system. With the crazy demand, just not quite sure when I'll be able to pick one up.

You do realize the update needs to be extracted, right? It's like downloading a zipped file on your computer and you need zip file space + extracted space on your computer to be able to extract it correctly.

Unless, of course, you treat it like gzipped browser content - decompress on the fly as it downloads. Then I only need the space to store the unzipped file, not the original+decompressed.

Here's why:

I love Apple, but they hella messed up! Adoption was probably low because the rollout was a disaster. Updating through iTunes was not working, OTA update was not working because it said I didn't have enough space, but I did. Eventually, I had to factory reset my phone and then do an OTA update. That worked! :)

But, it was messy, frustrating process!

The slower update rate may be due to a record number of iPhone owners purchasing new devices.

OR, it could be that so many of us were burned by the iOS7 experience, where we gave up a superior operating system (iOS6) for a POS operating system (iOS7) and couldn't go back.

Apple burned a lot of people with that, so perhaps it's that many of us learned our lesson.

You and MacRumors both. I think of you the same way I think of parents that teach their children to hate, using your position of influence for evil.

iOS 8 is a great update with small improvements in the UX which work well on the 4S, and even better on an even larger screen.

We have 2 4ses and an iPad 2 here that all run fine after the upgrade.

I updated OTA and in iTunes. What kind of problem were you having?

My family members aren't downloading for two reasons, one they don't have enough memory and I'm not going to explain to each and everyone of them one to do and secondly, they are all buying or receiving new iPhones this weekend.

I can understand why the adoption rate might be lower this time.
What D**k! What a great child you are

Adoption is likely slow because there are barely any new features in iOS 8. Most of the improvements were for developers and Yosemite integration.

I'm well aware of the differences in memory quality.
The popular price breakdowns of the actual media that apple uses has in the past revealed that their memory chip costs are just a couple dollars. I think my point stands.

You said 64GB retails for $19. I think my point stands. ;)

So install via iTunes, which doesn't require the space... and buy a device that has the space you want/need.

The 16GB devices have a place in the lineup for uses where lots of content on the device isn't the objective.
