I can't tell you how it works, but I can tell you that it does work. I stayed at a hotel on the 6th floor all last week and took the lift multiple times a day. It only ever tracked stairs when I walked up them. I did take the escalator at the airport and wish I would have checked more carefully (I wasn't thinking about this feature) but I don't think it counted.

Excellent, thanks! I'll have to test the escalator but if one works I expect the other does.

I know this is an apps thread, but for clarity, anyone figure out how HealthKit knows 'flights' vs taking an escalator or elevator? Does it tie steps and vertical movement together with the gyro? I've not tested this yet but I'd hope it would exclude automated travel that way! If there's a document that explains how the basic measurements are done, anyone have a pointer? Thanks!

I don't know how, but I'll share this tidbit: I use a chairlift at home, and it can tell that I'm not climbing the stairs myself. That's freaking impressive!

----------

It's tracking things but not the right things. I just left the gym where I rode a stationary bike for 5 miles in 22 minutes, then lifted weights for 40 minutes.

It shows Walking + Running at 1.96 miles and Steps at 4,305 steps, but nothing on cycling. iPhone 6 was in my right front shorts pocket the whole time.

I added in 5 miles cycling manually.. I'm new at this like everyone but is there a way to direct it to track certain categories??

It doesn't track cycling on its own. That data needs either manual input or a third-party app.

----------

Are there any Sleep tracking apps with health kit enabled yet?

Sleep Cycle alarm clock will be, but the update hasn't been released yet.

They didn't need to it was already built into the app also you dont need to allow access it just transfers

What exactly is the health mate app reading from the health app? I can't seem to find any connections between the two. If you are talking about steps transferring, then it's not pulling from the health app, rather it is pulling directly from the m7 or m8 chips in the iPhone, just like all step trackers do.

It grabbed all the data from my m8 processor in the iPhone 6 which stored the data in the health app

So it's not actually using the health app then. The two apps are just reading the data stored in the processor, not talking to each other.

Anyone else having the issue with MFP data being erased from Healthkit? It happened yesterday and only came back after I reset my phone. Again today until after I reset it again.

Yup, I'm having the same issue as well. I think the issue is tied to the health app still not being ready for primetime, as I noticed that I lose the data when the app sits in the background and is not opened for a couple of hours.

Count me in too.

Also, had a weird issue where it duplicated my lunch calories two days ago.

Seems to have not done that since though.

I'm a longtime Fitbit user but I think that it may have become redundant and unnecessary now that the iPhone can track all the same things. I'll be honest, my Fitbit One is probably destined for a drawer.

Me too, but I'll keep my Fitbit around for sleep tracking. I wish it had a 'smart alarm' like Jawbone to wake you up in lighter periods of sleep.

I also like the look of Withing's Aura, but it's pretty expensive at the moment, especially in Australia at A$400.

Edit: For those Fitbit users who also want it to integrate with iOS 8 Health, Fitbit is recommending that we vote for the feature to be added here: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/ideas/v2/ideapage/blog-id/features/article-id/3353

Correct, even according to their own FB page, the app has not updated and there is no integration with the Health App. Health Mate has been pulling from the M7 & M8 for quite some time now. This is not the same thing as being integrated with the Health App. Two entirely different things.

I've had the same basic issue... It continually duplicates calories, carbs, protein, etc. as it pulls data from MyFitnessPal. And when I edit the information, it mistakes that as well, so it's never "quite" right in the Health app.

I'm hoping it's merely another bug that'll eventually be ironed out, as I really enjoy the promise of being able to look at a broad range of factors over an extended period of time.

Abvio Walkmeter 10.3 - no HealthKit?

Abvio Walkmeter 10.3 did indeed come out today, the description says "Now supports iOS8 and iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus!" It then goes on to talk about notification center widgets. But no mention of HealthKit - neither there or in the app.

Not sure what "extensive support for HealthKit" means then...help?

Got this from Abvio this morning (Cyclemeter, Runmeter, Walkmeter guys):

Hello Rich,

Thanks for asking about our iOS 8 plans. We have submitted our 10.3 version to Apple, and we expect it to be approved any day now. It includes extensive support for HealthKit, as well as the ability to start/stop/lap and see stats from the lock screen in Notification Center. It also supports iPhone 6/6+ with their larger screens. And finally, we converted the whole app to be 64-bit, so it should run more efficiently on the iPhone 5S, 6, and 6+. We hope you like it!

I hope this sets your mind at ease about the future of Runmeter and iOS 8!

Please feel free to let us know if you have other questions or concerns.

On the Garmin forum it's being reported that Garmin Connect only access Health when using the Vivofit. This explains why most say it doesn't work while a few report it working.

So unless you are using a Vivofit you are out of luck with Connect unless Garmin offers an update.

Shawzborne - Just a post to thank you for all your work on this thread. Great job putting this together and keeping it updated!!

Great job!!

I can confirm that Garmin Connect will read/write data to Healthkit if you're using a Vivosmart, the next-gen activity tracker to the Vivofit. So it apparently works for two products.

I am using the Forerunner FR-15 ... and I get some of my data imported into Health through Connect. Though not my heart rate monitor stuff that I have seen.

I'm hoping May my Ride will soon be enabled, that's my bike riding app of choice.

I've enabled the walking dashboard, but I don't see a way to see total steps or distance from prior days. The dashboard is only showing dots on the dates without providing the details. Is there a way to see the detail from prior days?

Confussed by Health App

Hi guys,

Where can I get an idiots guide to the Health App?
I have a 6+ and have recently started to take a real interest in my own fitness and health...

1) Will health track all that I need on its own
2) Is it best to use a wearable
3) I mainly go to cardio classes at the gym, and do some road running and would also like to monitor heart rate and sleeping patterns.
4) Do wearable's feed back into Health App or do they run independently?
5) If you suggest a wearable - am I best waiting for the Apple Watch?

Thank you.
