But we as customers have little choice. Take the OTA and install iOS 8 or let the update file remain forever on our iDevices taking 1-2 GB of valuable space.

If you are on 7.1.2 you can delete the iOS 8 update from your device under settings -> general -> usage.
 
I said 5S just to put an example. What I mean is that if people don't want lag when updating, DON'T UPDATE, stick to the software that your iPhone came with.

well, you know, when you buy something i expect it to last at least 2-3 updates. 2-3 years is reasonable, everything else is just bonus. ios7 was a bonus for iphone 4, ios8 is a bonus for iphone 4s. ill leave ios7 on my 4s and just give it to my mom, then buy myself the 6. it's long overdue. and to think that my 2007 imac is still going strong and is still pretty fast... yosemite is the SEVENTH operation system it will be hosting.. crazy.
