I don't think anyone was "scared away" from updating because of the issues that "plagued" iOS 8. Most people don't read MacRumors.

It's most likely because they don't have enough space to update. iOS 7 was more scary for people since normal people were talking about it.

Still running iOS 6 and 7.1.2 here. Will do so for as long as I can. Each iOS update gets worse.

You got that right. I crippled my 4S with 8. But it did repair on the next update. But looks like I have nowt to lose but 'upgrade' to 8.1 ....it surely can't get worse.

Can't it?

How many in the silent majority (of 4S users) are feeling let down by Apple?

I was going to go for a 6 plus. But lost confidence in their integrity after this :-(

The moral of the tale here is ... If in doubt. Wait three months before a software jump and let the early adopters do the beta testing.

If in doubt re: hardware. Wait six months and go for the revised S model.

Thanks!

8.0, 8.0.1, and 8.0.2 had more than enough room for complaints, but I haven't found a single annoying bug in 8.1 that makes me stand up and take notice.

I'm not exactly sure what problem people have with 8.1 at the moment. Could someone enlighten me?

It's not like these issues were only here on MacRumors. When my mom calls me and asks me about "that thing with iOS" I know it's gotten some pretty hefty news coverage. The iOS 8.0.1 bug was shared everywhere.

Er... none? I think you overestimate people's brain power...

Actually I read a few forum posts already wondering why their iPhone 5 didn't get Touch ID with iOS 7 thinking it was a bug. I also ready another one asking why they couldn't add their credit cards to Passbook for Apple Pay using an iPhone 5s.

The only reason I don't have it on my iPhone 4 is bc apple crippled the support for it.

The argument that Apple is intentionally crippling older devices or partaking in planned obsolesce doesn't make much sense to me when over half of the active iOS devices on the planet are on the current build mere weeks after it is released.

Apple provides support for older device in iOS update, people say they are doing it to cripple the device and force an upgrade.

Apple does not provide support for older device in iOS update, people claim they are doing it to force an upgrade.

They can't win.

yeah, it's called the vocal minority. no one i knew with an i4 had problems with iOS7. it improved mine a bunch actually.

And then wait six more months, because Apple never has released an "S" sooner than about a year after the base model.

Then wait another month, because the "S" model will be running the newest software, and you want to wait for the .1 update, then three months after that because that's how long you said to wait for the early adopters to find all the bugs.

Add it all up, and you'll be waiting 16 months. If you're currently on the 4S, then in a couple of months you'll be ready to buy the 5S. The good news is you'll pay a lot less for it.

you need to let people know you are kidding ...we aint mind readers :)

Peace?

So when you read "51% of Apple phones have stopped working" posted by some anonymous guy in a discussion forum, you think it's true? You think anyone thinks it's true?

O. M. G.

It's still the Yosemite Bluetooth of Death to Mac users.

I've complained repeatedly and filed many bug reports, but Apple refuses to fix the Bluetooth bug. :-(

Back to Mavericks, and yes, I did save an IOS 7 backup too if necessary.

"it exists, therefore it's ubiquitous"

this thread is already taking a dive...

Unless they force an upgrade. Then Apple do win. I guess the complaints are plausible.

I highly doubt that. And besides, I think the people who haven't upgraded yet are not waiting for iOS 8 to get less buggy, they just ran out of space. I had to clear about 5 GB of space on my 16 GB iPhone to update to iOS 8, and that's a lot of space to clear if you don't use iTunes to update. I still have no idea why Apple continues to sell the 16GB iPhone.

Honestly, iOS7 for me was far more buggier than 8.1 is. I've never had better battery life, and faster animations than 8.1. I'm actually really happy with it. And I use an iPhone 5, which is not exactly fast by today's standards.
Have a look on these forums about the problems with IOS 8, some of the biggest problems ever, it made my Air almost useless, I started using my iPad 2 on 7 because the Air was so slow.

I am sorry you are having issues...but most of us aren't.

Are we to conclude you've taken some comprehensive poll to base that statement on?

Like iOS7, everyone I know that's updated to iOS8 has had plenty of complaints about it. If you would do even a quick search on iOS8 Issues, you'll find a multitude. That Apple stopped people from being able to downgrade after allowing them for a short time has not gone unnoticed either, and added more anger to their issues.

I'd love to see an actually meaningful poll, not just how many tried out this irreversible update, but how many are happy they did, and how many wish they could undo it now that they've seen what it's done to their expensive devices.

Apple's really been on a downward slide for a while now.

Can't argue with any of that. You're right I'm afraid.

Oh well ... I can but hope ...

How many are old vs new devices in this stat

I've updated my iPad 4 only and not my iPad 2, thank goodness. I've had all kinds of issues on my 4 and wish I could go back. I ran the status App on both devices and noticed when any App (safari or mail or any App for that matter) memory usage spikes up 20% on IOS 8.1 vs iOS 7.1.2 to 90%.

IOS 8 is garbage.

Please note I'm not an Apple hatter. I have a 13" macbook, 13" macbook pro retina, iphone 5 for my wife, 2 itouches, 2 iPads and even a 3rd gen iPod 15G that I had to replaced the battery myself.
