iOS 9 Adoption Jumps to 66 Percent After iOS 9.1 Emoji Update

iOS 8 is still working just fine. Since Apple has no plans to support previous versions of OSX but continues to support older Windows XP 32 bit OS's, I have no plans or ability to upgrade.

Correlation does not equal causation. This article implies that the increased adoption was caused by the availability of emojis.

I disagree. For all of us who keep up with these things, performance updates are obviously more important. But I think there are plenty of people out there who would respond like this:

Macrumors user: "iOS 9.1 is out! You should update your phone."

Person: "Cool."

Macrumors user: "It has new emoji..."

Person: "I'LL UPDATE WHEN I GET HOME!!!"

I think the emoji incentivize the update for those iOS users who couldn't really care less about, let alone know about, the new tweaks and options available in iOS updates.

It was like 50% after only one week, 60% after like two weeks, and now only 66% ?

Which leads me to believe ~30% of the iOS ecosystem consists of 4 types of people :
A) Are waiting for a stable version
B) Don't care about upgrading
C) Don't know how to upgrade (moms and dads :D)
D) Tell themselves they will upgrade later but procrastinate

....assuming this % is based on iOS9-eligible devices.
E) Use company phones that can only be upgraded when the IT department says so.

I think my dad just got iOS9 about the time of this update - because the IT department had finally run their tests and cleared it.

(Just saying it's not an insignificant group. It's probably not 30% of the iOS ecosystem - but 5-10% wouldn't surprise me.)

Some of these responses are hilarious. The kind of people that wait for a x.1 update to upgrade hang around these forums. The average iOS user base cares more about what they see/notice.

Not saying that 5% comes completely from people that want emojis, but this thread isn't giving them the credit they deserve. People love them. Maybe not people on this website, but a lot of people do. The users on this site are not even remotely representative of the average iOS user.

Jailbreak

Apple released the first major update to iOS 9 two weeks ago with iOS 9.1, which featured a slew of brand-new emojis. Since that update, iOS 9 adoption has grown by 5 percent.
Thank god for those sorority girls and their incessant need for every emoji under the sun, including the sun itself to let you know via Instagram that they've made it to Cancun.

HAHA! You have obviously forgotten the rollout of 8.0 and especially 8.0.1.
It was so bad it hurt the adoption of iOS 8 as people waited for iOS 9 instead and it forced Apple to apologize for bricking peoples iPhones.

I was just making fun of Apple and the stupid heading for this thread :)

Still on 8 here. after experience massive slowdown with a previous iPhone with updates, will not be upgrading. Apple only optimizes updates for the latest phone 6s/6s + (which have 2gb ram), the rest on 1gb or less. Every update will only slow from here on out on the 1gb and less phones.

my parents iPad takes 5-10 seconds to open apps.
Worked with my colleague 's iPad 2 running iOS 9.1 yesterday, and using iPad mini for work everyday, I call that BS.
it's ancient hardware but not nearly as bad as you depicted....

Not all the people outside of this forum are completely idiots.....

Jailbreak is not the answer. Not everything should be done because Jailbreak. Just like Android users that say root is you answer. Screw all that. The normal everyday consumer doesn't mess with that crap. You are the very small minority.
I can't see a single reason to mess with my iPhone 's security with a JB....

That's great over 90% are securely encrypted from prying eyes of the govt. I've got nothing to hide, but that is not another way of saying you're invited to monitor my activity

Its not the answer but it belongs in the list that person you are quoting was replying to. I waited for an ios9 jailbreak to upgrade, might be a small minority, but PsykX was creating a list combing a whole bunch of smaller groups contained within the whole.

It's viral. I got several people to update by sending them middle finger emojis and telling them they would see it only after they update.

Do you think the average person would care otherwise?
This. I'm surprised how many people on this forum forget that average users generally won't be showing off bug fixes and performance improvements. But new emojis? Certainly.

You left the fifth type :

E) Those with the 16Gb iPhones who don't have enough space for update.

2015- The Year of Emojis.

People are all over Emojis that Companies come forward to release software updates focusing mainly on Emojis and some go forward and release a Hardware Keyboard for that!
