I don't think Apple would introduce OLED without making a change to iOS. The iOS7 look was great for the perfect iPhone LCD. OLED would require a dark mode to iOS to really showcase the beauty of the displays.

I just hope the iPhone 6+ receives a 2208x1242 display so it doesn't have to do all the downscaling crap which slows the device down. I've used my friends' iPhone 6+ and it is extremely laggy compared to my iPhone. Comparable to my iPad mini 2 which is the same as the Air 1 which is quite bad.

AMOLED would be cool with the new wallpapers for sure. I just hope they are well calibrated, I don't like the horribly over saturated displays of the Galaxy S6 and such, it makes sharing photos annoying because they look much less saturated to other people than what I thought and I realize the photos look like garbage. The blacks actually being black looks nice. Also, the current iPhone displays are too cool in color temperature in my opinion.

Galaxy s6 has 4 different modes where you can adjust the saturation. The basic mode on the s6 is very similar to the color saturation on the iPhone.

Nothing about the S6 display is oversaturated unless you want it to be. This is already a settled argument. The S6 display is the best in the industry. Clarity, calibration, reflectivity and brightness levels are all spot on.

Maybe I'm a minority, but I went and saw the S6 on display at a cellphone store. the s6 screens are supposedly the best screens on a phone - and it's amoled.
I dont find it to be superior to my iphone 6, side to side.
sure the resolution is higher, but i already cant see pixels on the 6 from normal viewing distances. the s6 also seems really warm to my eyes too.

im sure it's the better technology, but if thats the best it can currently do, i dont think its a big enough jump right now to warrant moving from the already very mature IPS LCD panel.

maybe in a year's time for the 7, when they've really nailed it down.

If the next iPhone has an amoled display, it will be very tempting for me to uograde. That and a powerful CPU. I've been wanting an amoled display for a while now, especially because the amoled display looks gorgeous on my apple watch.

I just don't think Apple will be able to easily get SAMOLED panels in their phones as Samusng is the manufacturer that makes the best, and they don't share their screen tech nicely with other companies. Take the Motorola Moto X 2014, it uses the same panel as the Galaxy S4... Unless Apple plays nice with Samsung, or finds another supplier, I don't see it happening.

Meh, business is business. The more Samsung parts in an iPhone means the more you are actually buying a Samsung phone branded by Apple. If the bean counters determine its profitable they will take the contract and make displays for Apple regardless of how aggressive they are toward each other when selling phones.

Also keep in mind Apple will get parts from SOMEWHERE. It's not profitable for Samsung to turn down a contract and let one of their other competitors have it.

I never said once anything about Apple not wanting Samsung stuff in their phone. Samsung will sell them parts, but in the display department I still doubt it at this point. For one it's a competitive advantage that they've been doing for years. You say that if it will make them money then they will do it, yet no other OEM (Motorola, HTC, Sony, etc.) has the rights, or privelage of using their latest display panels in their devices. I would assume that it is in part due to low yield of the latest generation of SAMOLED panels, but they do want to have some sort of exclusivity that sets them apart. Yeah, Samsung could lose business, but as of right now they are the only manufacturer for the high quality displays used in their own phones. If you think they won't keep that from other companies as long as they can, you are fooling yourself. Apple would've switched to SAMOLED by now if there was a supplier to match the quality of Samsung.

Sorry, I was saying what I remembered experiencing with my GS4.

Won't happen for the 6s. Good chance of it for the iPhone 7 though. Since I think iOS 10 will have some visual changes with it being the milestone of 10 (possible rebranding to iOS X) plus it's been 3 versions now on the same UI (7, 8 and 9)) Looks have usually changes some every 3-4 years.

Where would they source the displays? Samsung? ;)

I'm pretty sure it's too early for this to happen, Apple will probably have to invest in smartphone OLED display production facilities themselves to keep up with demand as I'm pretty sure no one is capable of that all by themselves.
I'm also still very skeptical about the technology. Even the best of Samsung's latests OLED displays still suffer from burn in.

For now, I think these are there just to keep up with the black Apple Watch theme.

That's what I think. I think that iOS 10 (or X lol) will be the big one. So far since iOS 8 we've only gotten under the hood updates, so now everything should be good for iOS 10 to have some UI changes. I will be pretty disappointed if iOS 10 is like 9 (minor changes).

LG has already invested $1 billion to expand OLED production. That's a lot of money just for Apple Watch.

Not sure what you are going on about.

Samsung MANFACTURES parts for Apple. They don't design them for Apple. Samsungs latest screen tech will never be in an iPhone because they will be building iPhone screens per Apples design not per Samsung design.

Just like the pressure sensitive SAMOLED on the Apple watch from LG. That is Apple tech manufactured by LG not designed by them.

Apple will have Samsung make their screens because they are the best, fastest and likely cheapest manufacturer to do so. Not because Samsung has a good design of their own.

Btw this what Apple has always down and why they have singular parts spread across multiple manufactures. It's likely Samsung along side of LG and others will be making iPhone 6S screens.

Yeah, I know what a manufacturer does. You obviously don't comprehend the point I am trying to get across: the SAMOLED panels Samsung uses are THEIR tech. Sure Apple could tell them to manufacture a few million panels, but Samsung isn't going to let them use the same tech that goes into their own panels. If you think Apple has "designed" these supposed lanles you are fooling yourself. Apple may request parts for their devices but they do not design all of them. I doubt Samsung will sell one of their competitive advantages off so easily.

I don't understand why you think Samsung didn't design those displays they use? They make them and were one of the pioneers of OLED displays.

Apple's real hope for OLED panels is to hope that LG and other panel manufacturers can make panels as nice as Samsung.

Why do you think not other phone OEM uses Samsung panels as nice as the newest S series phone? It's not because they haven't asked.

A good point, however that is also too recent for a turnaround in production for this upcoming generation of iPhone - more likely will be in the next generation, non?

That said, in the "news" thread comparing the 6 vs 6s screens, a few posters have mentioned that a single flex cable to the display is good evidence hinting at an OLED display

If they do switch to AMOLED it will definitely be in the design refresh, since AMOLED panels are thinner and could allow for a more radical overhaul.

I think it would have been discovered if the new screen were amoled because wouldn't they look quite a bit different than just a slightly different cable, wouldn't they?

Again like everything Apple uses its per Apples design. Do you think when Apple needed Ax chips Samsung made and shipped Exynos chips to Apple? When Samsung made iPad screens they were Apples design, LG and Sharp didn't meet Apples design quality control.

I'm still not sure what you are on about. Are you saying Apple calls up Samsung and says "yeah we need some screens.....gives us the best you got"?

Nearly all the parts Samsung and others make for Apple carry an Apple patent.
