Podcasts - The Podcasts app has been revamped with a new option that displays all Unplayed podcasts and a section that houses all of your stations in a list.
But did Apple finally add support for the itpc:// URL scheme to the Podcasts app? When a visitor clicks on a link like itpc://mywebsite.com/podcast.xml on my website (from an iOS device), the Podcasts app should load, displaying the playlist of episodes contained in the XML file. Instead, under iOS 7 and 8, Mobile Safari displays a dialog: "Cannot Open Page. Safari cannot open the page because the address is invalid."
Apple created the itpc URL scheme, so why doesn't their own iOS honor it? Apple will never allow utilities like
RCDefaultApp for iOS, so we are dependent on Apple to do this for us. And shame on them for not thinking of this when Podcasts app was released; it is
basic functionality.
The iTunes Store is fine for some podcasts, but the most logical place for someone to look for and find a podcast is at the website for that organization. And until Apple can stop iTMS from randomly deleting podcast listings, the itpc scheme is a workaround which is actually preferable. (And no, you can't resubmit a deleted podcast from the same iTunes login.)
C'mon, Apple, think different!
