I can't believe a 8/16 GB iPhones are still sold.

Why? My 16GB iPhone 5S, 2x 16GB iPad Air, and 3x 16GB iPad Minis are doing just fine.

Its like saying 'I can't believe my rMBP only came with 500GB SSD' when most computers come with multi TB drives.

Its almost as if the consumer can make an educated decision on what device they want to purchase for their needs.

Legacy Support Time

Apple should also be working on legacy support to make it so that iOS9 will run on older iOS devices. Apple should do this all the way back to the original iPhone and equivelant iPodTouch. Yes, there are some features in the new iOS that require more processing power but Apple could make iOS9 gracefully fall back on those. Targeted compilation and good programming would bring current hundreds of millions of iOS device users who would then buy more apps, more media, more content and that's where the money is per Apple's reports. Old iOS devices don't die, they get passed on to people with less income, less money to spend and that is a way of Apple reaching more market who will later upgrade. It's a cumulative power.

It works on my six, but is no faster than typing a PIN. I guess it's supposed to be more secure or something, because nobody's ever seen the TV shows / movies where someone's finger / eye is removed to use for biometric access.

I will worry about that when my emails and texts that I work to keep private actually contain important information. As of now if someone wants to kill me and cut off my finger in order to get my latest amazon receipt or a text telling my wife I am driving home then I guess thats their choice

Yay!

But my main concern is they don't change much and people aren't going to upgrade...

I've never understood this. That's an Apple concern, not a consumer's. I could care less about other people upgrading but the amount of care couldn't be measured by any instrument currently known to man. Besides there was a radical change from iP5 to iP6 and tons of people upgraded, and are continuing to upgrade. There won't be a radical change from 6 to 6s. Those who want to upgrade, will. Those who don't want to upgrade, won't.

Either way, a more stable and optimized OS can only be a good thing; especially for current customers. It can also be an impetus to upgrade for those who didn't because of the perceived problems in iOS8.

About time they started working on stability and optimization. The last STABLE iOS release was 6.1.4, which is why I am still on it. No iOS 7/8 user can say they are able to get 10-12 hours active usage on their phone. NONE.

Oh my goodness, yes! We need this so bad. My iPhone 6 stutters when my old iPhone 4S never did on it's native OS.

iOS has gotten MUCH more powerful, but the amount of lag, bugs, crashes, and freezes is ridiculous. I realize my iPad 3 was underpowered, but iOS 8's performance on it is an embarrassment for Apple since they claimed "the iPad is known for its fluid graphics performance." This could really hurt Apple's reputation (which is a valuable asset) if they don't turn it around.

Hope this means they'll still support iPad 2/iPhone 4S

But they most likely won't :(

This is great news! Let's hope they do the job probably and people can stop complaining about the 'instability' of iOS. Let the great OS become great again for everyone! I also think because of this Apple will still support the iPhone 4S & iPad 2 would be good for their adoption rate still a lot of people are using those devices (don't blame them or tell they should upgrade to a new device.

Also OS X could use this not as much as iOS, Yosemite has not a lot of issues just Wi-Fi (a basic thing) that doesn't work probably and the lag problems with the Retina Mac's should certainly be fixed. They eventually understood at Apple a stable OS is the first thing that should happen.

iOS 9 means a whole new host of bugs. It never ends.

They make 16 and 8 gb phones. And then wonder why they need to shrink file size to update their devices.

They should stop making these devices to begin with.

4 and 8 GB would work fine but are still from yesteryear just as 16 GB is today

a 500 GB computer hard drive is certainly not the equivilant to a 16 GB chip on an iphone. an os upgrade alone requires a well over third of the space.

i dont recall receiving anything from apple informing me about how much space would be needed for upgrades, the sms database possibly ballooning or cache from apps being hard to get rid of but obviously you did.

Did you miss Mavericks?

This! Mavericks is incredibly stable and runs silky smooth. Plus with the addition of compressed memory, it really is one of the largest leaps in OS X's history since Panther>Tiger, IMHO. I haven't upgraded to Yosemite yet, and seeing all the bugs that my friends/colleagues are encountering, I don't think I'll make the Yosemite upgrade for quite some time.

The fact that the biggest feature in a new release is that it actually works is embarrassing.

How about iOS 8.5 instead of iOS 9? And keep Yosemite but just make it better. Use WWDC to launch a new music app/service and SDK for native Watch apps. Oh and how about a new TV (not getting my hopes up on that one)?

Here's a better idea. Instead of having programmers spending countless hours trimming the OS down 25%, do the common sense thing and make the lowest end unit come with 32, then 64, then 128.

I can't believe a 8/16 GB iPhones are still sold.

Or... Maybe... do both? Faster and more efficient, AND more storage. I know... I know... I'm way outside the box here...

Swift

Basically, what this article means is iOS will all be ported in Swift.

I'm not entirely sure why people are getting so excited over something that should be happening with each release. Optimization, ok maybe not EVERY iteration...but a whole release because they can't "keep" up with themselves? Necessary? No doubt, but not something I'm going to get excited about.

I'd love an update that just focuses on the bug fixes. This would be so perfect, and would be great to accompany an iPhone 6s and a split-screen iPad

Remember this happy response when they actually make announcements.

While I'm 100% in favor of this it seems MacRumors members have exclaimed they're in favor of it until the actually announcement is made and then they cry and scream that there aren't a million new features. They go on and on about lack of this or that and how it didn't live up to expectations.
Here's a little tid bit you appear not to be aware of...

The people who are happy about this announcement won't be the same people who complain about the lack of new features.

I think this is terrific news and I hope that it actually comes to fruition.
