The thing that makes me laugh the most, is how people don't take responsibility for their data using a legacy data service, AKA POP3 e-mail. Do the people complaining even realize how decrepit POP3 services are?

You would be hard pressed to find an email service or server (if doing it in-house) that doesn't provide robust IMAP email. I suspect that the services that provide POP3 as the only email source are incredibly rare.

Yeah, rootless security in El Capitan is nothing but a gimmick. Improved IPv6, who needs that? Gimmick. Metal? Who wants to improve GPU usage and reduce overhead. Seriously. Improved internationalization and localization? Honestly, does any non-English speaking American really use these computers anyway?

I've historically been a fan of the less glitzy OS releases (Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and now El Capitan) because those releases have been much kinder to me. (Lion was the absolute worst.) The updates to the OS are less obvious but to say it's nothing but fonts, emojis and gimmicks is a sign that you probably view the "flat look" as the only thing significant about Yosemite. This would be extremely superficial.
Clearly you haven't used Android's stock Mail app (and somehow, I doubt you've been using it with POP3). It's as crippled and lacking in features as Apple's. Seriously. I'm not applauding Apple here either. I'm condemning both apps as complete jokes with similar goals. Google wants you using Gmail (their Gmail app is VASTLY superior to the stock Mail app) and Apple wants you using iCloud (their Mail app has support for extras like push mail but only with iCloud).
Android is superior in a lot of ways (I still maintain that their stock keyboard is, without question, the best onscreen keyboard that exists) but pointing out the Mail app is absurd.

thank you for being the sole person to reply to my posts with any kind of credible response. I will say that my comment was a great degree of generalization and that there *are* a great many more improvements in the newer OSes than I implied. ive been bitten by some serious bug issues in the last few years due to apple "improvements"...such as them changing the way PCI addressing works in 10.8.4->.5 which broke a sizeable investment in expansion cards. I still have a working system, but I have to patch every update with kexts from 10.8.4 in order to keep my equipment running. Apple long ago said they simply would not fix the problem. I want to believe in Metal but after witnessing the joke that was Apple's support of OpenCL im hesitant to call it anything more than another impressive rollout for another technology that will be abandoned in a year or two when like a hyperactive child they're drawn to some new flashy technology, and leaving Metal as another project that could have been huge if they'd put some backing into it. Ive just been using Apple too long to see this stuff as anything else.

thanks for taking the time to put in some thoughtful replies.

At least stay back at Mountain Lion. Mavericks is like ML but slow. I updated to Yosemite just because it was faster. I mean, still not great...

i'll tell you the truth, im running mavericks on my studio machine but it actually has to have some PCI driver kexts from 10.8.4 to keep working right. Apple changed PCI addressing in 10.8.5 so i have to patch every update now or my expansion cards arent seen.

Because IMAP is buggy, out of the end user's control and causes all sorts of problems, when you access from more than one device. At least POP is in your personal control.
I agree with the buggy part, especially the Gmail IMAP with their custom authentication. POP, by design, doesn't support multiple devices well; I can't imagine having to keep deleting or marking as read an email on every device I use. I wish there were a new version of IMAP to address all the problems it has.

Oh well. Move into the 21st century and use IMAP or change email providers that offer IMAP. There plenty of free options.
Or move to a different mail client that actually works? At least let Apple make their own excuses for their broken implementation. It's like how burning a playlist multiple CDs (yes, the truck I drive only has a CD player) in iTunes just doesn't work since version 10 or 11. I don't even know how they break these things. And Apple is notorious for randomly killing basic features... Maybe they do it when if accidentally break them then don't feel like fixing them.

I have this problem too, even with old mail I had on my devices before IOS 9 came out.. My ISP told me to move IMAP.

The way I had my devices configured was to keep mail on server even if I delete a copy from from my devices, then I could to my desktop it would remove the mail from there. Now with IMAP its configured to remove mail every where when I delete it from a device. Which I hate, I wish I could get it to stay on server till I get to my desktop.

That's how it's supposed to work. You have one mailbox, and it's synced. You have the same mailbox wherever you look at it. That's the entire point of IMAP, really.

"personal control" = marking things "read" over and over.

I use a mail client on a computer, web browser and phone. I am not interested in cleaning up my mailbox repeatedly.

IMAP has been working fine for me for years (Have not really had an issue using it on iOS 9, but that is just me)

I do agree with the POP supporters, this is still an issue Apple should deal with and not ignore just because POP3 is ancient!

Hm what kind of bugs come about? I haven't had a problem, though one person I know keeps saying that Mac Mail takes longer to retrieve messages than Outlook and mobile Mail on the same account.

I just like having everything in sync. The only issue I've come across is my iPhone Mail app keeps saying "cannot get mail" and I have to manually close Mail for it to work again. But that's since iOS 9 so I'm thinking it's a bug that will hopefully get fixed soon.

This POP email thing has been a huge issue for me... although I occasionally noticed it on iOS 8 as well. It is NOT a result of the email being deleted from the server because I can still see the preview in the Mail app, so the content is on the phone, but it's refusing to show it to you.

And by the way, POP is still very useful for certain situations. I use both IMAP and POP and I find that POP minimizes data usage (syncing email folders) and it helps me stay organized (if I check an email on the road but don't respond or take time to "mark as read" then it still downloads to my computer as new). I also have much more confidence in data backup of my email folders since I'm not at the mercy of Cloud storage.

Am new to this forum. Came looking for helpful information on the email issues created when I updated to IOS 9. I was under the impression that this forum was meant for those of us who aren't techies to ask questions and receive helpful answers. Many of the replies I have read regarding those of us still using POP have been anything but helpful. Those who choose to rely with sarcastic and cutting statements offer nothing that would answer the questions posted but certainly do show the arrogance and opionated views of the responders. Yes, I am sure that I am one of those "idiots" who still use POP but because it worked just fine under IOS 8.4, there was no need for me to seek out help. Now that my important legal email correspondence has been lost, I had hoped for some positive feedback when visiting this site. Too bad it was a waste of my time.

Well, Apple is taking it's sweet time to address this issue. I wonder if looking at other hardware and software options is in order. "It just works" doesn't seem to be that important to the big A these days.

you think its bad here try asking for help on the actual apple forums. im convinced the most "upvoted" people on there use bots to get so because they are some of the most useless, sarcastic, and unhelpful people ive ever encountered. i get into it with some people on here but everyone here is decent on the whole compared to that wretched hive of scum and villainy.
