Blackberry is an Android device. Derp.

Only on one phone, unless I'm reading their site incorrectly. They still have half a dozen other phones running Blackberry 10. Its supposed to be pretty decent, except BlackBerry has also announced they're dropping development this year. What, exactly, differentiates them if they do that?

No mention of the fact that Windows is at 87%. No mention of the fact that various Linuxes and Unixes make up another 2% or so.

But when we talk about iOS, it's important to talk about the market share that everyone else has, and the fact that iOS + Android make up 98% of the market, even though nearly identical statements could be said about OS X and Windows.

That's because Microsoft has thrown in the towel. They're now putting their services on Android and iOS devices.

Although I feel that the move was premature. I feel like they could really use laptops running Windows 10 to sell Surface products, which could then be used to sell Windows 10 Phones.

My view is that Microsoft really screwed up and had a great chance to come up with a third alternative system that would have had great leverage in taking advantage of Windows 10. Instead, they are short sighted and only playing with others.

I know what you're trying to do here... you know, the typical 'laugh at blackberry' comment on an Apple based forum with thinly veiled arrogance behind it; LOL @ Blackberry, they still make phones!? LOL @ People who buy them from some dealer in a back alley!

Yes, there are still old BBOS phones out there. No, Blackberry is not based on BBOS anymore, it's Android. One phone or many phones, it doesn't matter.

AND NO, I'M NOT A BLACKBERRY FANBOY. I've never owned a blackberry. It's just embarrassing to see a bunch of people constantly rip on one corporation while pledging allegiance to another over a TELEPHONE. It's pathetic.

Samsung S7 announced in less than a week! It's major news because even though the S6 is technically superior to the iPhone 6S it's not sold as well because the 6S was released later last year. So they HAVE to take advantage of the fact Apple has got lazy now and boast must-have features. But constant Google searching is just showing vague and obvious stuff like bigger battery. Better screen etc. And less than a week til the official launch. 2016 is the year of make or break for Apple with it's tired iPhone IOS. If Samsung have 'got lazy' too and just buff a few edges and trim here and there then they lose and Apple 7S sales will prevail by default. I'm gobasmacked that it's not a bigger issue than it is. Anyway. Let's see how the land lies this time next week!

iOS and Android Capture Combined 98.4% Share of Smartphone Market

Interesting language in the title.

Really, it should read something like "Apple secures just 17.7% of market, down from 20.4%" or "Apple's smartphone market share declines to 17.7%". But by lumping Apple in with Android, MacRumors are trying to make it all sound positive for Apple.

Microsoft could use the same logic by saying "iOS, Android and Windows Phone capture combined 99.5% share of smartphone market"

Android is having huge successes in the developing world, but that's not a declaration that Apple is somehow failing. Android phones (especially AOSP) are dirt cheap, and very few manufacturers make real profits on Android devices. iPhone, in contrast, is one of the largest single OEMs and makes huge profit on each device it sells.

They don't mention the market share because it doesn't matter. What matters is that there is a global OS duopoloy. Nice try, though.

Steve was never really going to be "Happy" with 1%. That quote is misused. The launch of the iPhone was critical to the success of Apple. And it could have gone either way. The CEO stating that he would be happy with 1% of the market was his way of minimizing expectations.

With the recent news of the India government's subsidized smart phone initiative, I wonder how these #s will look next year at this time. Obviously talking to marketshare/units and not profits.

I don't think your assessment holds true ... at least in the US. People here, in general, don't like change. Many of the non techies I know, are already intrenched in the iOS ecosystem and dont/won't change to the Samsung even if the hardware could get up and do your laundry.

Basically, all the others should just quit while they're ahead.
Pretty much so. Thus, the mobile frontier has been settled with two competing platforms having the lions share and the rest dead or on life support.

Palm, Windows and Blackberry have become the Lost Tribes with those lost members now working at Apple, Google or various accessory or app companies support the predominant platforms.

I love the "Others" category! Is this made up of Ubuntu, Firefox, Amazon Fire…what else is even out there?

Wow, I'm surprise apple share is SO low. Yes, yes, I know apple phones are so much more expensive - that is outside the US.
iOS is closed and limited to Apple only. If it were open source, it would be destroying Android globally.

I just remember when Steve would've been happy with 1% of market share, they've come such a long way.
One thing totally understated is the phenomenal transformation Steve Jobs did to Apple changing it from a personal computer company into one of the most sophisticated consumer electronics companies in the world. When Steve returned, Apple was less then six months from losing solvency.

The board gave him firing authority for the entire company sans the Board itself and Apple Fellows. He tore into the place like a cleaning team into a Daytona Beach hotel after spring break. In a way, he was a corporate Trauma doctor purging people left and right, getting rid of as many non-profitable projects and social parasites he found to cut the hemorrhaging. Anything that didn't contribute to the bottom line was gone. Of course it upset a lot of people, but then, babies do cry when they loose their candy. In the end of it, he even removed some board members.

From that, those whom he kept, the shift started. First some cool ID work making the Mac look near and fun. Then the iPod and the iTunes music store. While it didn't get much publicity, Sony was totally broadsided from the iPod as their Walkman line sales plummeted -- even in Japan!

Then the iPhone that was a bolt from the blue killing off Palm and Blackberry in three years. All this time, he jettisoned anyone that got in his way whom was getting comfortable and mortgage payment centric. I still miss the loveable SOB to this day. I would have paid good money to see his dialog with the FBI over the drama this week. Sure there are some confidential memo's Steve wrote about dealing with the Feds before he passed.

So Apple is losing market share and shipping less units. Ditto for the iPad.

Haven't you heard? Apple is doomed.
[doublepost=1455816864][/doublepost]
But Apple makes the most profit and that's all consumers care about.

More profits equals more money to make better products for consumers. So consumers aren't wrong for caring about profits.

But that isn't something new, right? There has always been a wide price gap between the iPhone and the lower end Android devices.
Lower end phones used to be a lot less capable in relation to the high end than they are today.

Not long ago low end phones weren't even smartphones.

The supposed Apple user who visits a site with the word "Mac" in it to crusade for other brands and condescend other Apple users...is this a MacRumors phenomenon, or does this happen on other forums as well? Just curious. It's like going on a Red Sox blog and scolding Sox fans for hating the Yankees.

I would argue that point. In fact, it's not understated at all. It's very overt. What's your definition of understated?
