At what point do developers stop making apps for iOS? Wasn't that the issue the Mac had in the 1990's, a smaller and smaller market share, so developers abandon it?

I would expect that people won't stop making apps for iOS, but they'll stop making native apps. There's no point. There's lots of easy ways to make great cross platform apps.

Despite the smaller market share, it's about 50/50 split between how much revenue an app will make from each platform, because iOS users tend to spend more than Android users.

This is disappointing. This market share for Apple is terrible. I'd love to see iOS with six figure units sold each quarter. This has to do with iOS pricing for iPhone. A lower cost device will bring Apple higher ongoing income from other products and services,

Keep in mind that there are dozens of brands of phones that run Android, including ones that can be purchased for as little as $50 unlocked and off contract. There is, however, only one brand of iOS phone. Also bear in mind that Apple has never attained much more than 10% in the personal computer market compared to Windows' near 90%.

Yep, Apple is doing "Mac" all over again with iOS devices. I've noticed shift from developers paying more and more attention on Android and essentially shifting the main focus from iOS to Android. Sooner or later Apple needs make some drastic moves with iOS devices if they want to stay relevant.

Its crazy how so many of you care about the %'s. Who cares about profits, OS version, etc (unless you are a share holder). Both Android and iOS operating systems are very mature at this point in time. Of course there are pluses and minuses to each. I have owned every iPhone since the original. This is the first year I will not be purchasing the newest iPhone. Just upgraded to the Note 7 because to me its the phone that matters and not the OS anymore. I never liked the 6 design and for Apple to use it for the 3rd straight year is a slap in the face to progression. I just got my Note 7. I don't love Android yet, but man it is everything a phone should be in 2016.

The ball is now in Apple's court. I expect a great upgrade next year and then I will be back!

iOS and Android achieving a 99% duopoly in the smartphone market is remarkable given that Symbian and BlackBerry operating systems were industry leaders just six years ago.
Just goes to show how revolutionary, if I may, these new mobile OS's really were at the onset. It was a virtual asteroid strike that had an overwhelming, global change in our environment.

Alternate headline: iOS continues to lose marketshare to Android.
Significantly: Android gained 4% of the market, while Apple lost 1.7% of the market.

Good, you're joining all Android brands, as if they were one manufacturer. I'm sure that in the end Samsung, LG, xiaomi, etc. joined all their revenues and sent the money to "Android, Inc."

Congratulations!

Now what?

Prisma went first on iOS
MSQRD went first on iOS

What hip Apps/Games went first on Android this 2016?

dont make me laugh, you cant be serious? Developers make most of their money on IOS.

It was always going to end up this way. Mac v Windows, iOS v Android. Apple's market share will remain at 10-15%.

Yes, if Apple wanted a larger market share they should have licensed, open sourced or sold the OS separately other hardware vendors could have made their own version.

I think it's very interesting that these percentages (Android around 90%, iOS around 10%) roughly reflect the Windows/Mac duopoly 10-20 years ago.

This seems to be the effect of operating system licensing. If anyone making a computer can put Windows/Android on it, Microsoft/Google will have far greater market penetration. Not too surprising.

There also seems to develop a fairly steady state, which suggests a relatively small core of users who value the benefits of a more closed ecosystem (security, integration, etc.).

It's unfortunate for Apple that some people see these stats and think "clearly Android is better and oh hey, Android phones are cheaper too"
I doubt many people make phone purchases based on market share.
If you compare the top of the line Android w/ top of the line iPhone, prices are not much different and Apple has a higher market-share...
But many Android phones are not top of the line and are cheap--and people are most certainly making phone purchases based on price.
Most Android buyers don't read Daring Fireball when John constantly talks about "highest % of smartphone profits go to apple". They look at marketshare and it's clear Android is winning.
Indeed. Why on earth would the average purchaser care what percentage of profit went to the manufacturer?

Really? Are there some open statistics on this, or is it speculation?

Would be much better if Apple had 25% market.

It's common sense, and there are more than enough statistics if you take 3 seconds and Google.
Android has piracy written all over it. Guess how much money people are willing to spend for apps, if they can barely afford a low cost android phone..

I have the iPhone 6s Plus, I just bought the Nexus 6P to try Android. The phone was inexpensive as it was less that half what I paid for my iPhone. Slightly larger screen at 5.7, and crazy clear/sharp. The operating system was very surprising, I downloaded Android 7.0 and IOS 10. I was surprised how much more I preferred Android. Downloaded all the same Apps, I have to say I am sold! I just placed my order for a Note 7. I'm sold on Android and decided to get a phone far more advanced than iPhone. I'm shocked Android is so much nicer and the broad range of high end phones. I thought Apple was king. I strangely feel bad as I am a real Apple fan, have been for 18 years.

I'm just curious how you sell a .4 of a unit? How does one sell a percentage of a phone? Shouldn't the unit number be whole numbers?

It happens when only a portion of your phone purchase transaction is registered as they tally the numbers...the other .6 will be in the following quarter.

Crazy how quickly Windows phone has just died completely. Microsoft really has seemed to have given up.

The windows phone went to keep the Zune company.
