I know I'm off topic. When the link took me to ios7 page again, the feeling really grow on me that the flat design is actually ugly. Being flat should something goes unnoticeable. When being flat somewhat stands out, it's just a design disaster. Yeah devastating disaster started with Microsoft, but Microsoft never designed anything beautiful, so I let it go. But now ... I don't know. Jobs would have yelled, Stop! This is rubbish!

It's not really even a flat design. Only thing you can say is it's flatter than iOS 6, but with gradients and frosted glass layers and crap like that all over the place, it's far from flat

I agree that it's ugly though

"Got my sparkling new car! Wait...what's this? iOS in the Car? But I have an Android...ahhh I guess I'll get an iPhone!"

Makes sense

Commoditize cars and make people Apple hardware to get the most out of them

Sounds like something Apple would do

I have been waiting for an 800-lbs gorilla like this to move into the automotive connectivity market for a few years. Automotive electronics be it old GM Delco and any other electronic divisions have way too much closet system, proprietary and the infamous "not invented here" mindset when it comes to anything electronic in their car. That is for good reason, failure means more than your device not working, it could be a contributing factor to an accident.

Apple has some of the best UX designers in the world. They get that you don't just make a 3D rendered bitmap on a high resolution screen and keep the same user paradigm. You need to look at the whole experience and workflow. The teeth pulling needed to get Bluetooth built into cars over the past tens years shows a lot.

When this rolls out, I can easily see this as a make or break in automotive sales when people ask "Is there 'iOS in the Car' with this model?" If the sales guy can't say yes, they'll walk out and loose a sale. This is a big winner for Apple. Hell, I can see many holding off on a new car purchase 'til this comes out.

As if most Android users have the money and credit rating to buy a new car. While there are well to do Android users / developers, they are a small minority of the Android economy.

The lion's share of Android users get their phone for free when they sign a wireless service contract, refuse to pay for apps and complains dropping anything over $20 for a case.

They also become drama queens when they walk past a coffee shop and some Hipster's Linux laptop roots their phone via WiFi installing a bunch of nasty stuff -- those security steak outs are fun!!

Too bad there are no more Yugo's, an Android in the Car device would be a perfect match. Then there is Tata ...

They get their phone free because their manufacturers are not after hugely inflated prices? Just a guess, because there is no such thing has a free lunch!!.

Oh security, yeah. BTW, is the Apple developer website up yet or still shut down due to security leak?

Well while Android users get a Yugo, Apple users buy a fancy car which upon close inspection is supposedly running on a lawnmower engine? j/k

It will be nice not having to have a GPS in a car anymore...thank god for Google Maps.

Google Maps is fine if you live in a city. But if you travel, you can be SOL. Maps should be stored on a car's hard drive. I often get spotty cell service in certain places I travel. I would hate to lose my maps if I lose cell service. That is why a trusty GPS device (or built-in) is much better.

As soon as BMW can figure out how to integrate it w/o losing revenue from the embedded GPS and related services. I'm a long time BMW driver and their GPS has always been a sore spot for me as it's 15x the cost of a current model stand-alone and 2 generations behind. But I pay the $2000 because I like the clean look and convenience of an embedded GPS.

However, seeing as BMW is recasting its cars as German Lexuses (Bye buy Ultimate Driving Machine :( ) perhaps gadgetry will become a priority now.

BMW, as are all manufactures, are free to charge whatever they want for their optional features. I drive a 3 series, and I opted out of iDrive, but I do like Assist. iDrive is terrible, and I don't particularly care what version it is. It's terrible. That said, this would be great for them as they can focus on what they are best at, performance. The issue I see is that not having a unique UI reduces the cost of switching for those who lease. Still, I see no reason why they can't work with Apple to add additional exclusive features, at an added cost if they must, that integrate via this system. (An iDrive AppStore would be born.)

Really the only downside for consumers is that as Apple's UI become more and more popular it will decrease the incentive for the manufactures to improve the stock UI.

I'm not sure you really grasped my point. Of course BMW can and does charge what it wants. That's obvious. My point is that BMW does charge $2K for it and gets it. If it incorporates iOS in the Car then that $2K nav system becomes less useful and not worth $2K. If you were not aware all 3 and 4 series come with a color screen and iDrive now. NAV is still an option.

So BMW has to figure out how it's going to get back a $2K option if its going get a lot fewer Nav customers.

And you are dreaming if you think Apple is going to let BMW have distinct apps sold outside the Apple App Store. If Apple doesn't let carriers to that it surely isn't going to allow car makers to splinter apps. However there does already exist BMW Apps as an option, however, available from the Apple and Android App Stores. It's a $200 option and also includes iPod/iPhone connectivity. BMW Apps are really just regular apps like Pandora that are compatible with BMW BT system.

I disagree. If the hardware is seamless it might be worth 2K, even if the UI is no different than it's competitor.

I was not.

It's a lost cause. Let them sell the tech to Apple and get more favorable rates going forward. Or reduce updates and treat it like a second class service. BMW has offered iPhone/Blackberry integration for years, they must have known some features had their days numbered.

There are carrier specific apps. The craptastic ATT / VZW apps all come to mind. Apple even let a Skype and a Skype (if you have VZW) app in the store. Why wouldn't they let BMW apps that can only function in a BMW? It's not a new app store (though I can see how what I said suggested that's what I meant) but rather a new class of app.

They have been in talks with car manufacturers for awhile, and I wouldn't doubt there will be some safety features & functionality rolling out within the next couple(not several) years.

Yes, you've got a better point. It first presents you a bunch of over-bright, conflicting colour icons, stating this is flat, then you found out frosted glass layers and gradients are all-over... This inconsistency confirms that Steve Jobs is probably one of its kind, but Jonathan Ive much less likely is.

So should we point out every manufacturer that is not on the list? Seems kind of pointless. If your on the list then your on the list there is no need to point out everyone not on the list.
I am sure this list will expand as time goes on. It did with the original iPod so I feel sure it will in this case too unless a manufacturer is under contract with Microsoft and Sync.

Also, please research the difference between "your" and "you're" as you seem to have them confused in all your posts.

do not know about others, but today's integration of ios in mercedes sucks big time.

i am looking forward to have it properly done at last

Why would you want to buy a new Ford anyway? They're pathetic heaps of s***. NOTHING like the 'old' Ford, like pre-2000.

Well, they are in Britain anyway.
I thought the new model Focus (the one with assisted parking etc) was supposed to be much better than the previous one. I have a previous-previous model (2001) and it's been a great car :)

Works fine in London Ontario!

Okay well, London UK then ;)

I agree, it is inevitable. BMW's adoption of Siri Eyes Free is an indication. My point is only that BMW has to figure out how to monitize it. They have to figure out how bundle it and not offend buyers, but they always do. It's clear they see it on the radar or they would not have announced Siri Eyes adoption days before WWDC when Apple announced iOS in the car. I haven't seen how Mercedes is integrating it in their option package, but that will be a clue.

As for Apps, yes there is already a BMW ConnectedDrive app and a BMW Remote app which lets the owner know where the car is (similar to Find iPhone App) and also control some aspects of the car like remote horn blowing & light flashing. I inferred you were talking about apps that would bypass the Apple App Store. Sorry for the confusion.

I've hear about ten bad Ford stories for every one good story. The new Fiesta has been particularly poor.

i would love an apple car kit. There's nothing like there (apart from oxygen audio o'car which is SUCH as poor design with it's 1970's GUI that it's quite a shame)
