Apple leads in all usage categories. For example, online shopping where iOS accounts for 5X the revenues as Android. Why? Because people with $50 phones don’t do anything with those devices. Don’t spend money on Apps, content, subscriptions, shopping and so on. The App Store has half the downloads of Google Play yet twice the revenues. Making each iOS use 4X as valuable as the average Android user.

Market share is pointless if those users aren't spending money.

You miss the point. I was specifically talking about payments.

That plumber who came to fix your tap? Doesn't buy many apps but he's the guy you need to pay. Apple needs market share to get Apple Pay working. Otherwise, Apple Pay is useless to YOU.

You’re missing my point: banks and companies go where the money is. And that’s on iOS (not Android).

Apple already has greater market share than Android where it counts (high-end devices). Which is why iOS leads in all usage metrics.

I already use Apple Pay for over 90% of my purchases. That’s not going to change just because someone else joins the market. Apple Pay works now and will continue to work.

Ok, so I doubt you use Apple Pay for 90% of your purchases.

iPhone smartphone share in the US is around 33%. I hope you understand that I mean that if you want to pay an individual, using the new Apple Pay Cash facility, you have around 33% change that that person will take it. (In fact far lower).

Apple need market share for this to make it usable. I am not talking about any profit you think Apple make from devices or apps. I mean the people you can actually pay with the new facility. Let me say that again to be clear. Apple need market share for that to work.

I live in Canada. Contactless payments are everywhere. Just like most of the world. The US is lagging in this area.

Apple Pay Cash isn’t designed to replace all the other systems out there. It’s another service Apple gives to iPhone users. It doesn’t need to become dominant on every device to succeed. Just like iMessage.

Market share. A meaningless statistic unless you break it down.

Sales of $50 Android phones shouldn’t be compared to $400-1000 iPhones.

Here at MR market share is a meaningless statistic unless it favors Apple.

Steve Jobs addressed this issue in one of his prior videos about the importance of attaining marketshare over greedy profit. Without marketshare developers will abandon the ecosystem and it will start looking like a graveyard with lack of app updates, variety and quality.

Well now Apple can have both. iOS isn’t in danger of losing developers.

Apple currently has enough market share to sustain its own thriving ecosystem. That’s what people who criticise the smaller market share of iOS don’t get. Not only that, but Apple has managed to also consolidate the best customers - users with disposable income who are willing to spend on apps and accessories.

That’s why apps are typically released for iOS first, or exclusively. That’s why the Apple Watch and iPads sell, while android wear and android tablets are a barren wasteland. That’s why even google makes sure their services are available and well supported on iOS, because the Apple ecosystem earns them way more in revenue than android, despite Android’s vastly market share.

Market share in a vacuum is meaningless. I am pretty sure you understand this concept as well, and I think it’s a shame that you continue to misinterpret economic concepts and misrepresent them just to paint Apple in a bad light and create the impression that Apple is doing far worse than it actually is.

Simply put - Apple has the best of both worlds here. Users, and profitable users at that.

Now that iPhone X is out the component supply chain is showing weakening demand.

Solution for turning around sales is to drop the price, get rid of the notch and add back Touch ID to complement Face ID.
Turning around what sales. That article hedged on all sides. We'll wait for apples quarterly earnings call. Guidance for this quarter, I believe, were an astounding $87billion.

However, let's start the "apple is failing" agenda now. Next quarters guidance will not be anywhere near that high watermark.
