As I own both an Android and iOS phone... I will say the web browsing experience on Android is an epic FAIL compared to iOS. The Android web browser I'm using (that comes with the phone) is really inferior to Safari. I find the whole android experience inferior to iPhone, but as I develop apps for both, I must have both,
can you elaborate on this please? Exactly what makes the browsing experience on android so inferior to the iPhone. I thought the scrolling and multi-touch gestures with the chrome browser would put it on par with the iPhones.

Not surprised really, Linux isn't really popular (or profitable) on the Desktop, so its no wonder a product line which sells like hotcakes surpassed it.

Linux is really only prominent in the server space.

I remember how every year from 2004 until 2009 was supposed to be "The year of Linux". The reason Linux never took off is it's a PITA to use, even some of the simpler distributions. I tried it once and I spent hours trying to get it to work with my video card. Even though the community was helpful I got tired of editing text files just to get a stupid GUI to work right. I threw Windows XP on and spent 10 minutes installing the drivers. Now that Windows 7 has such a large native driver database I just install the OS and run automatic updates and spend 0 minutes installing drivers.

I don't know, I personally found the latest Ubuntu to be extremely easy to install - simpler and less nerdy than XP and the same difficulty as installing SL / Windows 7. That might be because I installed it on rather vintage hardware where everything was supported out of the box.

after switching to MPB, linux just feels like cheap knockoff. I used ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04, and thought it was ok compared to xp & windows 7, but after switching to mac, it just doesnt seem so seamless. Can't run a few programs due to few users, the free apps are generally not so great quality, seems to try really hard to emulate the feel osx (considering the changes from 9.10 to 10.04.

Well technically iOS is based on darwin which is a port of unix.

Linux originally got it's start as a port of unix so they are somewhat similar

Yes, they are similar, but Linux is not a port of Unix but a clone, written from the ground up.

What's the point of this article?! The BROWSER is the application that navigates the web...NOT the operating system!

Who cares if I'm running Firefox on Windows or Linux or Mac? It's still Firefox.

This article/news title is literally the most dumb thing I've read in years.

In contrast to iOS you are free to download the browser you want from the Android marketplace.

Maybe you should get out your Android phone again and download Dolphin. I'm eager to try it out and hope my Samsung Galaxy arrives soon :D

So to put a long story short: Either enhance your Android experience or stop lying.

(...the sound of linux fanboys releasing an onslaught of web-surfing bots...)

I vote for "stop lying or baiting" - the Android browser is WebKit based, has great JS support via v8 and it really rocks on my N1. So it might be a less preferable to some than mSafari because of personal tastes but EPIC FAIL was clearly a bait.

Started the revolution of what? Browsing the web?

I disagree with you. Are you trying to state that Linux is mainstream? What markets? Certainly not with consumers. And certainly not with corporations. Windows dominates corporate Servers and End User machines. Unix would be 2nd place for corporate servers. Linux would be 3rd place. Very very very very very very very few corporations deploy Linux desktops/laptops and even those are likely for specialty, technical roles like developers.

Linux is still for enthusiasts and corporations that wish to deviate from Windows and/or Unix SERVERS. Linux has struggled for 15+ years to become "mainstream" anywhere in the corporate world. I think it's gonna be another 15 years before Linux becomes anywhere near mainstream in the business world.

Looking forward to seeing the benefits of this. (i.e. iOS optimised porn sites) :p

There's loads already. Lol !!!!

This article is one of the best examples of linkbait I've seen in a while, and the usual crowd is falling for it hook, line, and sinker.

I barely know what Linux is, but I've got an iPhone. Which part of this is amazing?

It is mainstream if you consider it is on every Dish Network box, every TIVO, etc and lets not forget that Android is Linux.

I really don't think Linux users are jumping to IOS devices either. In fact they would be more likely to jump to Android devices because of their open nature. I think what might be hurting Linux other then the fact that it is tough to use and most consumers don't even know it exists, is the fact that Windows 7 is actually pretty darn good for a lot of people. I noticed some people including friends of mine who were everyday computer users moving from Windows XP to Linux because they were tired of XP issues and viruses and so forth. Now that Windows 7 is here and very stable I think not as many people feel the need to move to Linux anymore.

Also Linux has been lacking for a long time when it comes to the subject of professional software, video and games. I think a lot of people are starting to notice these limitations and want to move back to a system where they can actually do real work.

The other chunk of Linux users who have moved on I hope have moved to OSX. It may not be free and they had to buy a new computer but OSX covers most of the reasons I have ever seen my friends use Linux for in the first place which was stability and lack of viruses. Not to mention they can actually enjoy video and games to a certain degree again.

What is also interesting is the fact that this statistic compares platform were information is mostly obtainable by internet browsing (general computer, and mobile devices where apps aren't as common as iOS) with iOS where a lot of information seeking isn't done through the web browser but through specific apps (ex imdb).

+1

There's nothing better than competition and lots of competitors.

Android is the best kick in the ass, Apple's had in some time.

I hope it drives Apple to improve. I like Apple, I dislike stagnation.

[ I also like my N1...:) ]

That was uncalled for. The man uses both as he develops apps for both. He finds the IOS experience better. Some find Android better. ITS HIS OPINION!!!
Just as a little quip, there are more apps for IOS then for android so by your rational you can enhance the IOS more than you can Android.
Either way, both have positives and negatives.
