This was an obvious feature on the 5.5" iPhone.

They are, afterall, following the Galaxy Note's footsteps.

Man, this seems almost too big and unnecessary, especially for your pocket. Seems like the size difference between this and the iPad mini are encroaching too close to each other.

5.5" really isn't as big as it sounds. Go into any BestBuy and hold a Galaxy Note 3. It's really not that big and that one is a 5.7"

A part of me is hoping that the 5.5" falls under the "iPad" category and can run iPad apps from the App Store rather than the iPhone version but who knows. Probably not.

Looking forward to having a 5.5" phone and not caring even 0.01% about the social backlash.

I hear you.

I've been using an iPad mini with cellular as my main and only mobile device since the original mini came out, and it feels great to have a superior device, pay less for my mobile plan, and not care about the social stigma.

That is actually something that has me most excited. With this, I won't need/want two products.

Will definitely be tighter in my pocket based on other phones I have used, but not unusable. Pros would outweigh the cons for me.

I would suspect that it would be up to the developer. Good point though. I am scratching my head now.

That's the point though: 5.5" devices are for people who want one device rather than a separate phone and tablet.

Ooh now this is pretty exciting if true. Having a bigger phone is nice, but having multiple panes on-screen would really set it apart and I can see it being very useful on a 5.5". Even more exciting is the prospect of running multiple apps in different panes, like a Twitter feed on one and Mail in the other.

Things like this start moving you from "a phone that can do other things" to more of a true "computer in your pocket".

Xcode on my iPhone? Yes please.

I am not disagreeing, and I am not saying you are the type of person that I am about to mention, but I can't help but think of all the people here who shouted how pointless side by side screens on the note (now three years old) was.

One of, if not the best, feature that was introduced with the Note IMO

Under iOS8 this is possible on every device and can (depending on the app) perfectly make sense even on an iPhone 5 form factor. The SplitViewController is no longer limited to iPads.

Gruber's right. If Apple copies Samsung's 1-handed implementation I will cry.

Laugh It Up, Fuzzball ★
Brian X. Chen:

To deal with concerns that a bigger phone will make typing with one hand difficult (the current iPhone has a four-inch screen), some changes to the design of the iPhones’ user interface will allow people to type or use apps with just one hand; there will be a one-handed mode that can be switched on and off, two employees said.

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, Oh, that can’t be. Samsung tried that and it was ridiculous. Haha, the New York Times got punked.

The thing is, I’m not laughing. You wanted Apple to make a 5.5-inch iPhone? This is what you get.

Actually the Mini and a 5.5 inch phone are surprisingly different in size. I carried a Note 3 (5.7") for a few months in my pocket without a problem, it felt like a larger phone. Even after a while it didn't feel that large. Trying to put an iPad Mini in my pocket would be virtually impossible and certainly wouldn't feel like a phone. I don't think a 5.5" phone and the Mini are close in size at all. Please refer to post #35 for an excellent link comparing the two, thanks darkslide29 for posting that.

In fact I plan on purchasing the 5.5" iPhone 6 and the new iPad Mini. I'm now using an iPhone 5 and an iPad Air.

Poor iPad Mini. Prepared to be canibalized.

Guys... a 5.5" smartphone and a nearly 8" tablet aren't as close as you think...

I really don't see how one can replace the other.

Yeah you might not feel like spending $400 on a small tablet when you have a large phone... but it's pretty clear to see that they each can offer a different experience.

Even if the iPad Mini never left my home... I'd still prefer to use it when I was at home.

A 5.5" phone is nice... but a 8" tablet is nicer. I'll take both! :)

Clearly an ipad nano..

They'll most likely even call it that.

Interesting...

Not sure if better stretched out from 4" or made iPad-like.
Quite messy this new way, unsure if I like it....

Something tells me the iPhone bezels will be a lot larger and in addition the aspect ratio is different. But I see your point.

The 5.5 is ridiculous for me. If I can’t get it in and out of my jeans pockets while sitting it’s not comfortable.

Try this image instead - shows more accurately the rumoured sizes.

True... that's why I tried to focus on the size of the screen... not the entire device.

A 5.5" screen and an 8" screen aren't as close as people are implying.
