But you get that the article says nothing about running multiple apps side by side, right?
It just says apps could be running like on the iPad if hold in landscape.

Yes, I understand that. But while it's probably not part of the initial plans, it seems a logical extension at some point.

So another advantage of the 5.5 vs 4.7... bummer

Depends on the users needs. Most will be fine with the 4.7". Many may choose the 5.5" for it's unique features. One is not necessarily better than the other.

This has been Apples plan all along. The 5.5" is not "Just" a larger iPhone 6. It is a different iPhone 6.

Life is good. :apple:

And Apple would care less about that because iPhone profit margin is 2.5x more than iPad mini. They can eventually kill off the Mini.

I always felt like iPad was the red headed step child at Apple. Yeah I know they have that big ad campaign and the deal with IBM but it feels like iPhone gets way more attention. I hope we see a renewed focus on pushing iPad forward this year. If all we get is a slightly thinner iPad Air with Touch ID that will be disappointing. iPad needs software improvements as well. I'm hoping this "iWatch" team is a dedicated team and they didn't have to pull too many software engineers off of iPhone and iPad development to work on it.

I know there's auto layout but all this resolution fragmentation bums me out.

We've decided that we're dropping resolution dependent assets and using PaintCode to convert the PSD files that our artist makes straight to Core Graphics calls, instead. It works in-app... but we don't have a method for dropping the bitmaps that have to be in our bundle (IE, the icon to show up in preferences).

I definitely see the appeal of the 5.5" iPhone 6 now (didn't see it before)...

But will it fit in my pocket? That will be the determining thing for me, I think. Will need to go to the Apple Store and try them both.

Personally i really hope the 5.5" iPhone 6 is real, i don't even mind if it doesn't ship alongside the 4.7" it will give me time to decide if 5.5" iPhone 6 is what i want.

If a 5.5" is announced, hopefully there will be some demos at the Apple Store, so you can play with both to make a better decision.

Personally, I'm pretty sure that I would go for the 4.7", but you never know!

I would prefer the 4.7" screen, but not with the rumored 720p resolution screen. I will probably go with the 5.5" and then try the Moto X2 keeping the better of the two.

I still do not love the look of the iPhone 6 and am hoping the final product looks better than what we have seen to date.

Well in an ideal situation i would like to go the Apple store on the day they are released, play around with both the 4.7" and the 5.5" and decide, but i doubt i would be able to buy one, because the Apple store near me (Birmingham UK) there will be people queuing around and outside the shopping centre, so the chances of getting one will be very low.

However what i have done is been into other phone shops such as O2 and played with all different phones that are 4.7" and 5.5" Note 3, LG G3 and Sony Xperia Z 2. And i did like the 5.5" screens. What i'm hoping is that Apple will announce them both tomorrow at least.

I don't feel good about this at all. I don't know if I'm being anti-progressive and resisting time and change but, Apple has literally reinvented the phone and literally changed everyone's lives with the iPhone. After all the smartphone revolution began with the iPhone. Original iPhone with the 3.5" screen had the golden ratio, it was perfect. The App Store came and apps changed everything, now you could make your phone do anything you wanted. Just like Steve Jobs said in the first introduction of iPhone, buttons weren't there when you didn't need them so if you had a great idea 6 months from now you could implement it. That is exactly what happened. It was revolutionary.

Then Samsung came, they marketed the hell out of things and made a few good phones. They saw people's unnecessary (for me anyway) appetite for big screens and used AMOLED displays that look brighter to an uneducated eye, added a bunch of gimmicks, didn't really care much about hardware software harmony but satisfied the egos of hardware geeks, pumping whatever GHz, gigabytes, megapixels and cores they could find into their phones. Also, they put out new phones very fast, improving quality with every one of them. With the marketing campaign's success and sales rolling in, Samsung started to be seen successful and "better than Apple" by some people.

I don't like big phones. I've been using my 4S for 3 years now and before that I used my 3G for a little over 3 years. I don't watch movies or TV Shows from my phone. I don't game that often and I really don't need a screen bigger than 4", not even 4.7". I still think the iPhone 4 design was the best phone ever made and don't feel comfortable with the idea of a 4.7" iPhone let alone 5.5" People are going to go about saying "Oh you see Apple started imitating Samsung, bigger screen, lock button on the side yada yada yada..." Add to that the fact that Apple can make the 5.5" iPhone more premium over the 4.7" and we got ourselves a legend possibly ruined, losing the original form/roots. I still am trying to make myself comfortable on buying a 4.7" iPhone, especially with those "alleged" antenna breaks. I am trying to make myself believe that Apple isn't imitating Samsung or Android world and maybe I am kidding myself.

Call me old fashioned, past obsessed, anti progressive etc. whatever. Maybe I am all those adjectives I don't know but something definitely feels wrong.

That's just how I feel.
sounds to me like you don't like new technology much thats why you stick with older phones for years. You don't use the phone to its maximum capability like gaming and or web browsing much. I think everybody just needs to relax about technology evolving. Are you going to be complaining in 10 years about what happened in 2014? We already have everything we could possibly need just enjoy the ride and stop complaining so much. I don't miss my old pager from high school much. :)

This looks nice, makes me think about waiting for the 5.5 inch iPhone.

Wider screen means more space for stuff like this... thought this was an obvious no brainer. Just like the extra 0.5"

Agreed and it's a welcomed addition if true. Otherwise I like the idea of having a 5.5" phone, but other than seeing a lot more stuff there's no advantage like all of the other large phones in the wild.

Even the Note without the stylus can run tablet optimized apps and plug into 1080p displays to run as a desktop.

So another advantage of the 5.5 vs 4.7... FANTASTIC!

Fixed that for you.

Nice

4" iPod Touch
4.7" iPhone
5.5" iPhone
7" iPad
10" iPad
12" iPad

If all the rumours come to pass Apple will have all the bases covered.

Your last paragraph is actually a pretty good idea... thanks!

Landscape apps! What a nice feature!

It's like launching a laptop in 2014 with the following advertisement:

"Now with a touchpad!"

Apple should start showcasing the phones in AS a couple of days prior to launch date, allowing undecided customers to make their choice and queue up for launch day having seen the phone in person.

Yep. And Jobs can't have a 3rd coming and remove all the superfluous SKU's like he did in the late 90's. So Apple can over extend itself and make it hard for consumer to decide what they want all it wants. No one is there to stop Apple.

----------

That's the point though: 5.5" devices are for people who want one device rather than a separate phone and tablet.
Two devices in one does not necessarily mean you have the best phone or the best tablet. Just a device that tries to do both. How successfully? We will see tomorrow.

That's just how I feel.

The melancholy from your post is palpable. I get it. We like what we like. In my perfect world all cars come with the option of 3 pedals and a manual shifter. Unfortunately hardly any I like have that option. Alas, change is inevitable. We either adjust accordingly or fall by the wayside. The use case for smartphones has changed from the halcyon days of the original iPhone. Today it's more about the smart and a lot less about the phone. With the heavy emphasis on video, social, and productivity apps, the size increases almost seem a natural progression. We are a, to borrow an automotive term, MOAR society: moar power, moar speed, moar capability, moar screen real estate, and just plain moar (more, for the uninitiated).

Sucks to feel left behind. You do have options. Maybe Apple will update the 4" handset (unlikely imo). You could get a 5S and live with it for another 2-4 years (viable solution). Get the 4.7" and embrace the change.

What did I do about my manual car problem? Restored a 69 Mustang and got a 2010 Audi with a manual. Neither are the latest and greatest but both make me happy.

If this's true, Apple did it right again: cross-over phone. Yup, no one has done that. I love this idea and feel excited already...iPad like landscape apps, excellent idea, Apple.
BTW, Android couldn't do this because they don't have dedicated apps for tablets, but the same phone apps stretched out to make it fit...Poor.

No, it has been on Android for years. Paranoid Android is a custom rom that can turn any phone into a tablet/phablet .... and yes, they do have dedicated tablet apps.

Wow thank you for the post and actually caring about the feelings I laid down. Instead of accusing me with being against technology you poured your thoughts on it which I completely agree with. Either I will come to terms and get the 4.7" or I will get angry of the 4.7" being much more inferior in terms of features to 5.5 and continue with my 4S or get a 5S. We'll see tomorrow for sure. Thank you again.

Come to Europe and you'll find plenty of cars with a manual shifter ;)

The problem with Apple is that you like iOS and every year they release one, or two models, no more than that.
If you don't like the screen size you have no choices, either you take it or you change operating system.

I wish Apple would continue to support the 4'' upgrading the 5S with new SoC and other stuff (NFC, 802.11ac etc.) but I'm afraid they won't do it.

Am I the only one who wants a 3.5-inch phone? The 3GS was perfect for me. Even the iPhone 5S that I have now is a little too big for me to use with one hand. There's no way I can buy a 5.5-inch phone for myself.

This is getting insane, IMO.
