ios5 custom SMS tone?

No offense to OP, but I just never understood why custom SMS tones are such a big deal to people. It's 10 seconds at the most, it's not like you could make a part of a song your SMS tone. Apple always put in more and more tones with almost every update, and I'm sure iOS 5 comes with some more too. I think Apple just don't see the reason to allow custom SMS tones, seeing as how not many people would go out of their way to make a 5-10 second ringtone.

I agree with this post. I had a guy sitting next to me at the airport last week with is SMS tone as the Larry the Cable Guy's "Git R Done". It was funny the first time I heard it, but after the first 10 texts, I wanted to throw something at him.😡

Garbage in, garbage out. I'd prefer a more professional and informative message any day, like "Todd, you have a message from your wife.". Safer too, when driving, etc.

And of course, every time someone begins a message "no offense" it is because the message is offensive.

Who are you to tell everyone else that they shouldn't want what they want? I think you should spend less time defending Apple's boneheaded and stubborn insistence on the "one true way" to do everything and more time supporting the freedom of users to use their devices as thy see fit.

custom vibrations seem to be per person and for general, not for sms/mail. yes can use custom tones and vibration at same time.

While playing round with it today realised if you make the ring tone less than 10 seconds (i think), it now appears in text tone options!

So now R2D2 tells me when i have a message!!

Dude, you got it all wrong. I want a shorter SMS tone. The tri-tone gets so annoying by the end of the day when you are receiving so many texts! A simple, unobtrusive beep or chime that is <.5 sec would suit me.

you can have custom sms tones, I have enough to have set them for my contacts. Also length does not matter it will play any ringtone you assign, just keep in mind it will continue to play that ringtone until you slide to unlock.

Apples SMS tones are quite noticeable, but from the beta it looks like custom SMS and email tones are coming with iOS 5. .

I upgraded to IOS5 yesterday, so far i created my custom ringtones by generating .m4r files with a duration under 40 seconds. (create m4a file, rename... drag to iTunes) I realized some of those appeared in the tones list for sms under IOS 5. I then created a few custom tones ranging from 1 to 4 seconds in duration. And there you go, custom ringtones for sms! 😛
