The iPhone 4 is a complete beast in hardware with a fast processor, 512 MB of RAM, and a lovely screen.

Outside of any new hardware additions, do you think the iPhone 4 will have software features held back? Will you be mad? Will you justify it?

Yes, of course Apple will limit new features on the iPhone 4.

I had ios4 on my 3g and it was unbearable imo

I was experiencing like.5-1sec delays in launching apps to the home button, etc and no fluidity
Its slow, but I'm finding the performance adequate and I'm able to deal with it.

iPhone 3G will receive iPhone 2G status (zero support), 3GS will receive 3G status (50%) and iPhone 4 will receive 3GS status i.e. 99% support.

Perhaps they'll add the sort of Sony FeLiCa technology that we have in Japan. In Japan, there are new iPhone cases that incorporate a "digital wallet", like many of the other phones on the market here.

It would be nice if Apple included such technology in the next iPhone.

The iPhone 4 does feel snappier, but it's not really dramatic or jaw-dropping. The main improvement is the higher res. screen. Lately, my iPhone 4's been sluggish in between menus and switching apps. I am really motivated to just do yet another restore. It almost feels as if Apple put something in the code that forces the phone itself to slow down as time progresses in order to look forward to new iPhone hardware in the future. Conspiracy much on my part? Hehe.

Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed a lot of lag on my iphone lately. It seems like it pauses in the middle of a lot of stuff, it's not running as smoothly.

I doubt consipiracy (yet, maybe when the next phone comes out), but I wonder if the last update maybe wasn't tested for how well it operated as well as it should have been.

Its just on a cycle. 3G owners, why didn't you upgrade to a 3Gs if for no other reason you like the design more than the 4. $99??? Worth it IMO. I hunk the cycle apple has is completely reasonable. They support the device for a full two years and then go to 50% to 0%. No one has anything to complain about, your iPhone has been supported for the length of your contract and if you choose to get a new device you can. Either last years model or the new one. You can't expect them to support a product that is falling way behind the curve here. Their not being greedy just doing smart business.

Why?

Currently the 3G is being supported and that's two generations back. the 3GS is even more powerful and capable then the 3G, so its reasonable to expect that a phone that apple is still selling will be supported.

iOS 4.2.1 or 4.1 or even 4.0 sucks for iPhone 3G, and even Apple knows it, they even took GameCenter, Background image and Multitasking off the iPhone 3G. I think it was a bad idea having the iPhone 3G support iOS 4.0, it's incredibly slow.

Apple will release a new software and probably the iPhone 4 will support it with all or most of its features like the 3GS does now, nevertheless the 3GS will have to stand on some features because of its hardware specs (For example having only 256 MB of RAM).

In fact the iPhone 3GS does not support entirely iOS 4.2, for example HDR is not present in the iPhone 3GS, iMovie can't play because it does not use the A4 chip that the iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G and iPad have.

So in conclusion I do think that most likely when Apple releases the new iPhone and stops selling iPhone 3GS' we will see the new OS only working with limited features on some devices.

I don't think they'll hold much back on the iP4...maybe they'll include a radio in the iP5, but I don't think the 4 won't be able to do anything that the 5 can, other than said radio feature or something hardware based.

For that matter I don't even think I'll be upgrading to the iPhone 5...I'll probably stick to the 4 for another year. It'll be just like going from the 3G to the 3GS....not much of an upgrade.

Not much of a visual upgrade but big difference in performance between the two.

Agreed. My iPhone blows away my friend's 3G and it seems very decent (performance wise) compared to the iPhone 4. (or maybe Ive not used the iPhone 4 long enough to find anymore noticeable speed improvements. :D
Not sure how much the 3G sucks with 4.x, but if I had one, I'd probably bring it down to 2.0 ... the good days :D.

The 3GS is pretty quick but with the iP4 the A4 and graphics core are pushing 4x as many pixels. It screams.

I understand not adding new features and such of the new OS to older hardware that can't handel it well, and I don't mind cause it didn't have the new features when I bought it, but shouldn't apple still send updates for performance and security issues? There was a big .pdf exploit that was patched up (4.1 I belive) but anyone on an original iPhone iPhone isn't getting that patched.

That is something people have questioned.

Back when iPhone OS 2.0 was a paid upgrade for 1st Generation iPod touch users, Apple released a Free 1.x.x update to fix some security issues.

A similar 3.x update for the original iPhone would make some sense - not necessarily adding any new features, but plugging a few security issues and possibly enhancing support for the App Store/iTunes Store to support future changes/additions. Apple could be planning this for release in the future.

Apple has done some updates for very old iPod models to ensure that they continued to work with iTunes Store content.

yes, it will be limited on the iPhone 4, learn to live w/ the reality of having older tech and removing features from a new iOS for it to make the newer model more appealing to buy for the consumer... This is how :apple: rolls...
