Somehow, I agree with many of the points this guy made. I dont hate iOS6 and I'm waiting almost impatiently for it. I actually like the new features, but like the guy said, it could've or should've been there a long time ago. Some features Android had a long time ago... I mean, I understand technology advances every day and every updates there's new stuff. But seeing new stuff that Android already have makes it a bit unbearable. Although i have a Galaxy S2.

Saying those features should be have been there a long time ago is like saying you should have been the person your are today....at 13. It's one of those statements that people make when they don't have much insight to offer.

In the end humans are lazy and refuse to think for themselves. It's far easier to bleat "yeah dude you're telling it like it is".

What a ridiculous statement. Now you're comparing a smartphone's features to a person's life experience?

Such features have been standardized on smartphones several years before the iPhone's introduction. Apple should have met those standards by the 2nd or 3rd iteration of the OS.

But no, here we are, at iOS6, finally getting things like the ability to attach...pictures or video...within the email client...

So much for documents, audio files, etc. Nobody ever sends those via email anyway right...

Maybe you'll get full attachment functionality with iOS10 or something. Until then I suggest the readers of this thread to look past the iPhone if they're fed up like I was, to whatever suits your needs better instead of waiting like a loyal dog for its deceased master like in this sad episode of Futurama. :(

LOL. You think the comparison is between a smartphone and someone's life experience? I understand the confusion that emanates from you.

It's foolish to say "this should have been in x years/months ago". What needs to be in a product are the features that are relevant to those buying. If the iPhone didn't have the necessary ingredients the sales would not have broken records. If such features, as you claim, have been standard then the iPhone would have had poor sales. "You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all of the people all of the time"

Attaching files to email...how quaint and 20th century.

So basically you want consumers to do things the "old fashioned" way and are oblivious to the method that Apple "wants" you to use.

Half your list is just full of equally ignorant stuff.

Passbook can just be an app store download. It's a whole new API brainiac! It has to be in the system for 3rd party developers.

Facebook and Twitter also leverage an API on the backend (Accounts.framework). Notice that Flickr, Vimeo, the chinese microblogging sites and more are also listed? Again a framework not a feature.

Siri movies and sports scores a cloud feature? What kind of nebulous BS of an answer is that?

Do us all a favor. Stick to you Android and stop trying to tell iPhone fans what they have or don't have. You don't even understand the platform.

How about regular files? The reason the iPhone is so popular is because the majority of smartphone users don't need these features. Yet. For those that do, there's Android.

From what I've used/seen of iOS6 on this forum I feel like it's going to be a real decisive indicator of the actual technology enthusiasts vs Apple apologists.

I agree that this iteration of the OS is shaping up to be extremely disappointing compared only to other Apple updates. It needs to be remembered that consumers like myself care not about the "frameworks" and "back end" improvements that could facilitate great features in the future. People want those features as soon as they hear about them. It's like giving us the keys to a Lamborghini but not telling us where the actual car is.

What interests me about iOS6 when viewing this forum, is that people I recognize as big Apple fans are saying "eeeeehhhhhh, well...." about iOS6. There's a lot more of that going on with this iteration of the OS than lets say, iOS5. That worries me. I hope I'm wrong, as I love Apple, but it is what it is.

1) Maps: Ok, that's big enough. Whole new interface. Whole new backend. Yep.
2) Siri tells you sports and movie stuff: Yeah sorry, that's a cloud feature.
3) Facebook: Social Networking garbage that should have been paired with Twitter last year. Doesn't even deserve a spot of its own.
4) Shared photo streams: An x.1 addition at best. All they did was make photo stream social. An enhancement, not a feature of its own.
5) Passbook: An app that I could have downloaded from the app store like "Find my Friends". Most people won't use this. They trust the native app more than a consolidated solution.
6) Facetime over Cellular: Something that should have always been there when Facetime came out. No reason to delay except to ration out the features.
7) Phone replies: Should have been there since iOS1. A complete joke. Typical Apple nonsense rationing of features.
8) Mail enhancements: Stuff that should have been there in iOS3. OMG APPLE THANKS FOR LETTING ME ATTACH STUFF IN THE MAIL APP. Complete crap, typical Apple rationing of features.
9) Safari enhancements: Typical stuff that should have been in iOS5 with iCloud. More feature rationing.
10) Accessibility: Apple JUST realized that kids and sick kids can use devices you manipulate with your fingers and parents might want some fine grained control? This should have been around since iOS3 as a minor feature that every parent can use. Typical Apple trying to showcase a feature because they want to portray how they REALLY care about children.

Yeah, the maps turn-by-turn is overdue so I'm not impressed by it either.

The Yahoo Sports/Yelp/Rotten Tomato integration is kinda weak, too. I'm surprised they haven't done this and much more already. Also, why waiting for iOS 6? Totally a cloud feature as stated earlier...

Facebook integration? Overdue and pretty boring for those of us who got over FB years ago...

Shared Photo Streams: Yeah, pretty weak. Photo Stream is a half-baked idea to begin with.

Passbook will be huge eventually but it's hard to get amped about coupon/ticket consolidation. Payments will be integrated *eventually* and that'll be nice, but that's probably iOS 7 or beyond.

Facetime over cellular: It'll probably be LTE only but it's not like people use FT much these days anyway.

Phone Replies: Yeah, I'm surprised they even listed that as a standout feature.

Attaching pics within e-mails: LOOOONG overdue. Ridiculously overdue. I'm surprised they weren't too embarrassed to even mention it.

Safari enhancements aren't interesting.

Accessibility features: Again, hardly a standout feature.

So yeah, these updates are just fine but they shouldn't call it a full point upgrade.

Yeah, the maps turn-by-turn is overdue so I'm not impressed by it either.

What makes you think it was supposed to impress you? It's a feature and one coming from a company that has never done mapping before.

So you're a cloud engineer now huh?

Facebook integration? Overdue and pretty boring for those of us who got over FB years ago...

Twitter and Facebook are the most popular social sites and thus featured but what iOS 6 has is an easy way to plug in more than the 12 or so social sites they have now in to a single sign on.

Shared Photo Streams: Yeah, pretty weak. Photo Stream is a half-baked idea to begin with.

I don't think you even know what the Photostream idea is in the first place

Passbook will be huge eventually but it's hard to get amped about coupon/ticket consolidation. Payments will be integrated *eventually* and that'll be nice, but that's probably iOS 7 or beyond.

Depends on who signs up and what kind of efficiency that brings

Facetime over cellular: It'll probably be LTE only but it's not like people use FT much these days anyway.

I know plenty of people that us it.

Phone Replies: Yeah, I'm surprised they even listed that as a standout feature.

They didn't

Attaching pics within e-mails: LOOOONG overdue. Ridiculously overdue. I'm surprised they weren't too embarrassed to even mention it.

Because it's so hard to choose a picture one or more pictures from the camera roll and then tap the share button and then email.

Safari enhancements aren't interesting.

They didn't have to be

Accessibility features: Again, hardly a standout feature.

LOL. Naive

So yeah, these updates are just fine but they shouldn't call it a full point upgrade.

Apple can call it what they want. It's their OS and they don't have to give two ***** about what impresses you.

Guys...if you don't like it ...go to Android and be "impressed"

Oh god, this Calidude guy doesn't quit does he. Whine whine whine, that's all I see in his damn posts. It's been said many times before that it's obvious Android is the platform for you. So why don't you hop onto your Android-centric forums and whine to community about the lack of an FTP server on your mobile deivce or the other thousands of thing you nitpick at. There's no point that you keep dragging your feet about Apple. You obviously seem to disagree with how Apple does things. No point staying on an Apple forum with your constant bickering. If you don't like the way Apple does things, buzz off. Save us the headaches for us users who do appreciate and fully understand the Apple lifestyle.

Preaching to the choir is never as much as trolling the opposition. That's why he does it.

If you want to follow that logic, let's talk about how email itself is outdated.

Just because something is outdated doesn't mean you should limit your product below the standards currently set. Apple got a pass because they invented a whole new kind of phone and people overlooked the shortcomings. Not because attaching files to email is SO 2001.

I've been here for 2 years. See my join date there on the left? Been an iOS user for nearly 3 now. Just recently got a Nexus due to the strong rumors that the next iPhone isn't going to have a wider screen, and frankly, I can't have another 2 years of that.

I never said this update shouldn't have happened. I said this update was incredibly lackluster.

Honestly, for you to compare Steve Jobs to actual scientists that are actually changing the world with their incredible intellect shows that my avatar is quite appropriate. He is no doubt excellent at what he does, but he is not even close to being in the list of "greatest minds of our time".

If you'd like me to prove it, I will. You can choose how I prove it. Go ahead. I have my iPhone stashed here in my desk to give to a kid cousin later this month.

Apple users generally don't think outside of what Apple tells them to think, so they never venture anywhere outside Apple communities, much less do things like jailbreak.

I have my Nexus on Jelly Bean and its not even officially out. We don't wait for companies to update us. We update our gear ourselves. It's just that most people don't really care to update their phone while iPhone users will typically buy the latest iPhone as soon as it came out, whereas with Android...there's a lot of issues with carriers, manufacturers, different models, etc that need to be sorted out before people can be auto-updated.

iPhone and Android are 2 completely different business and OS models. You simply can't compare them on updates because one is open source and the other is tightly closed source and under heavy control by Apple. Sure there's a benefit to that system with timely updates, but not a lot of freedom for users and their communities.

Well, chalk me up as someone who completely agrees with you. I'm very thankful that I was an Apple user who didn't drink the Kool-Aid and was a self-thinking and non-biased user. I'm afraid a lot, if not most of Apple fans/users get brainwashed of sorts and support the company beyond reason and logic.

With my 4s being pretty unimpressive and just another iPhone with a version of a stale OS coupled with the lackluster announcement of iOS 6, I finally gave up on the brand for now. I find it actually embarrassing that they are touting and yelling out features that are almost archaic in the technology world and have been on Android for years, while still not catching up in the process. I just don't buy into what they're selling anymore.

With that being said, I considered a Galaxy Nexus on Verizon, but I ended up going with the Droid Razr Maxx on Verizon. And can I tell you that I keep asking myself what I have been doing and missing the past few years? It's an absolutely amazing phone and OS. It's actually very refreshing and it feels like I opened up a whole new world for smartphone usage. I can finally use widgets, use attachments in emails, easily navigate somewhere, etc, etc.

Guys...if you don't like it ...go to Android and be "impressed"

I did, and I'm VERY impressed. I think more people should take your advice actually. I think they will find it refreshing to get out of the box that they were stuck in.

I already know your next comment to me...."well then get out of here and go on Android forums". I already have but I wanted to post my opinions here after being an iPhone user for the past few years.

I've been here for 2 years. See my join date there on the left? Been an iOS user for nearly 3 now.

Yeah, and I've been here since before the iPhone was for sale—you want a cookie?

Just recently got a Nexus due to the strong rumors that the next iPhone isn't going to have a wider screen, and frankly, I can't have another 2 years of that.

We don't care about your Nexus. This is an Apple forum where we talk about Apple products. If you want to talk about Android, please go to another forum.

I never said this update shouldn't have happened. I said this update was incredibly lackluster.

Your rant about how stupid iOS 6 is says otherwise. You're marginalizing a slew of updates. Study up on Gestalt—the sum of the parts are greater than the whole. But you wouldn't understand good design if it hit you in the face.

Honestly, for you to compare Steve Jobs to actual scientists that are actually changing the world with their incredible intellect shows that my avatar is quite appropriate. He is no doubt excellent at what he does, but he is not even close to being in the list of "greatest minds of our time". :roll eyes:

Where did I compare anyone to a scientist? Even hardened Android fans accept that Steve Jobs was a genius. I said that he was ONE of the greatest minds. Who can argue that point? I guess only you—and poorly at that. Even the President of the United States agrees: “Steve was among the greatest of American innovators – brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.”

If you'd like me to prove it, I will. You can choose how I prove it. Go ahead. I have my iPhone stashed here in my desk to give to a kid cousin later this month.

Anyone can buy a device, but good try. I've got my original June 29, 2007 iPhone 8GB in-box here on my desk. And my 4S is plugged into my Retina MacBook Pro charging. So what is your point, exactly?

Apple users generally don't think outside of what Apple tells them to think, so they never venture anywhere outside Apple communities, much less do things like jailbreak.

And this is based on what? I would argue the opposite. We're some of the most vocal critics of Apple because we value good design, aesthetic, and usability. How does that make us closed minded? When Apple screws up we let them know we're not happy. Furthermore, many of us are insanely creative innovators. We're doing our part to drive the world forward through better design. We value Apple's ideology because Apple first valued ours. Have you ever wondered why the best designers in the world use Apple products to do their work? I found Apple before I went to school to become a designer and photographer, and I haven't missed anything. I used to build PCs so I know what I'm talking about. I've seen both sides. I've even screwed around with Linux. Apple products jive with who I am as a human being. I understand them and appreciate the careful approach to design and usability. It's something that I could never achieve with the systems that I built using off-the-shelf parts.

Don't even get me started on jailbreaking. I've done it and tried to live with it for several months. It kills the battery and causes too much instability. I even tried using it straight out of the box just to see if some tweaks were causing issues, and I still had springboard crash issues all the time—and don't even get me started on other issues like keyboard lag and more. Normal users just want their phone to work—they don't care about some geeky feature that 2% of the population might use once a week.

And that's exactly why Android is a train-wreck. Apparently many Android users DO wait for companies to update them because only 10% have actually updated. Do you know why your Nexus is an exception? Because it's Google's phone! It's essentially a copy of what Apple does, marrying hardware with software. Can you honestly not see that? Normal people don't want to have to mess with rooting their phones and loading boot roms. With Apple you just have to push a button and it updates itself and makes a backup to the cloud. It literally could not be any easier.

iPhone and Android are 2 completely different business and OS models. You simply can't compare them on updates because one is open source and the other is tightly closed source and under heavy control by Apple. Sure there's a benefit to that system with timely updates, but not a lot of freedom for users and their communities.

Yeah, Google is so "open" lately. And you're right that you can't compare the two business models. Google is an advertising seller. They make 95% of their revenue from ads. Look it up. Apple is a software company. Sure they sell hardware, but it's the software which makes the biggest difference. I'd rather buy from a company that is selling me a product outright than use products from a company where I'M the product being sold. My personal info is not safe in Google's hands. Same reason I shut down my Facebook account over two years ago. I don't like the idea of a company having all of my personal data which they can and do frequently sell to anyone with a dollar.

Most of what the OP said should have been there already is true, but the fact that all of that is now going to be added makes it a nice addition. I think the do not disturb should have been there since the inception of the device. I am sure many people will be happy with it.

I'm waiting for iPhone 6 to be released this fall before I pass judgement. I'm sure they are saving the trump cards for the special event in September.

My only complaint is to fix the Photo Stream feature. Having photos in my Camera Roll AND my Photo Stream is a bit silly. Make it one item that I know is already in the iCloud. It's a PITA to delete a photo from the camera roll AND have to delete the same photo from the Photo Stream too not to mention having basically 2 copies of the photos on my phone. PLEASE SIMPLY THIS!

That goes against the premise of Photo Stream. Photo Stream is a collection of your last one thousand photos. They are not permanent, one you hit photo 1001 the first photo is deleted. It's not meant to be a camera roll replacement it's meant to keep a safe copy of your photos until you pick the ones that are keepers.

I agree about iOS6 being underwhelming, even if new features are on the way for the new iPhone.

Let's think about all iOS5 features that were announced before the iPhone 4S...
notification center
iMessage
newsstand
reminders
twitter integration
editing photos
PC-Free/wifi sync
That's not even discussing iCloud related

The only big features we have for ios6 are:
maps
Facebook
passbook

anyone who believes this is anything less than an incremental update is kidding themselves.

What? I'm really not Calidude hahah

I live in Houston, I've been posting here very infrequently since 2007.

Coincidentally, I disagree with Calidude saying this is "typical apple rationing of features", or that these features should have been on since the 2nd or 3rd generation. For example, you could ALWAYS attach an image or video to an e-mail, they just made it slightly EASIER with iOS6. Truth be told, the iPhone is the best smelling smartphone for a reason - the software is rock solid. Try even scrolling a web page on an android after you've played with an iPhone and your will cringe - glitchy and jerky as hell.

Often times I read articles and forums for apples news and reviews. Many times I see comments of mega nerds (myself included) that criticize the products and how it should of been added or no one will use "X" feature.

But please don't forget apple isn't making stuff for the 1% nerds that are upset and can actually use every feature. They make simple products for the masses that connects people to technology. I recently met a lady on the bus that didn't even know how to use the maps on her iphone. Passbook will be really cool for movie tickets, gift cards, value cards if you don't think so you haven't seen a woman's wallet.

So for the AVERAGE iphone/apple user these features are great because they are more worried about the majority not the 1% complainers.

Your conspiracy theory that Apple "rations" features is silly.
Enjoy Android lag, malware, poor quality, poor support, cheap plasticky phones, poor app selection and quality, fragmentation etc.
You will be posting in the Android forums about all your issues with Android within days.
BTW if you are going to openly troll on forums you should at least know what you are talking about. But you don't.

Seriously, that was pretty lackluster.

I know there's another poll already but it's terribly constructed. This one is simple.

Lets summarize the 10 big features of iOS6 shall we?

From this page: http://www.apple.com/ios/ios6/

Anyway, yeah, iOS6 is a joke. I'm done with this nonsense for good.

I like iOS, but your really just exaggerating a bunch of stuff from Android.

In all the vids I saw, the Galaxy Nexus ran smooth as butter thanks to Jellybean. Also, if you aren't dumb by downloading random apps, you won't get malaware. You won't get malaware for downloading Angry Birds on Android.

Apple does have better support overall and its build quality is better, but "cheap plastic Android phones" don't apply to all of them. Some actually feel really good, some better than my iPhone 4.

App selection? Go to Google Play store and look at all the apps. It has basically all the maps that iOS has. Sure its missing some games like Infinity Blade and Tiny Wings, but most of the apps I use on my iPhone are on Android.

Fragmentation? Yes, Android does, but you have to look at iOS. If Apple not supporting FaceTime 3G and turn by turn directions on my iPhone 4, I don't know what is.

I'm not defending Android, but "enlightening" you from either your stupidity or misinformation.
