"ios 6 is lame and underwhelming. Android and windows 8 are so much more innovative"

"well, what's missing that prevents you from getting your job done?"

"i don't know ....i just expected something more revolutionary™"

"oh so you don't have a specific complaint? Just some sort of expectation based on nebulous features that don't exist?

"yes...something like that. I'm bored"

pretty much the extent of threads around here. The focus is primarily on user facing features for many here. They cannot be bothered to look nor try to understand architectural differences.

This is why there's a schism between what geeks know of the computing world and what consumers know. Consumers may not be able to articulate why they like a certain os more than others they just know it "feels" right.

Geeks get caught up in minutiae and often doing things the harder way.

Ios 6 will be a popular os. People don't have to relearn their phones yet a bunch of annoyances with purchasing, updating through the app store and many more things will be improved.

I don't see how anyone can tell emotion from text on a screen. The problem I see with owning a Mac or any Apple problem is you have to be vested in it 100% or you catch the crap that's strung throughout this thread. It's either all or nothing... you can't have an opinion that strays outside the groups opinion or you get remarks like "Hasta la vista". Funny.

This started off with one guys opinion. He started getting hammered for it and then once some of the sheep left the flock and started forming their own opinion, they too got hammered. That's ridiculous, yea cult-like in my opinion.

As sorry and crappy as Blackberry is, it can do things iPhone can't do because of restrictions set by Apple. But no point in beating a dead horse. I retract my statements about iOS6 and Apple... I can't wait for iOS6 to be released so I can drink up my kool-aid and be all lovey-dovey with my iPhone. And just because of a stupid little video card issue, I'll sell my 1,1 and go buy a brand new Pro desktop just so I can stay in the circle of trust and we can all get along. That's the only way you can keep on good terms around here, you either follow everyone else or you get the hell off the forum.

No I think that if you say something negative about Apple it really depends on what you say. You can get a consensus of people that will agree on some topics. You won't necessarily get attacked for saying Apple should have a larger screen on the iPhone because there are a bunch of people that would like that as well.

You WILL get attacked for saying things like

Serves no purpose. Everything is blah blah blah coulda added that a while ago, that's feature rationing ..blah blah blah

This thread was started by a troll that slammed on operating system that he didn't have the faintest clue about. What good should we expect to come from that?

I hope the final release will have much more than they announced. I recently switched from the Droid 3 to the 4s, since it was giving me so much stability problems.

The 4s has been smooth and is everything I wanted, except for no google navigation.

Now seeing all the new Android phones with Jelly Bean, with some major improvements and quality phones especially from Samsung. It's tempting to switch back to Android. mmm. Galaxy S3

Apple, please make IOS 6 awesome!

If you are expecting any 'new' feature on iOS 6 for your 4S other than the ones announced, then prepare to be disappointed. ;)

I wish apple would just update the interface. Simple things like ditching the blue or notifications in the status bar. Also quicker access to things (wifi toggle etc...).

Sure I can jailbreak my phone and get those but I feel these should be a standard now.

I'm running the beta. Personally: yes, I am disappointed.

I don't like the new Maps app. Once again Apple's focus is on the USA, which is a step backwards from Google's solution. It won't even show a highway that runs through half the country and has been there for over half a year. The satellite view sucks BIG TIME.

I was hoping for a great implementation of turn-by-turn, but Siri trying to pronounce street names from foreign languages as english ones, simply ruins the experience. It would do much better behaving like the TomTom app, saying things like "In 100 meters turn left, then stay on the right line".

I don't care about Safari as a Chrome user and the rest of the stuff is mostly imperceivable. So I guess it actually feels like a downgrade for me

I wouldn't even care about Maps if they allowed me to freaking change the default apps. But I WILL constantly get pushed into Apple's Maps and Safari just because they force their users to be awaiting the new features of apps in the next version of iOS. I love their hardware but once again the software disappoints me.

VIP inbox and DND mode make it quite handy for me.

I found the data is constantly updating, I will reserve my judgement until release. In other news you can report issues in the app, I guess you could tell them the road is missing?

Yeah, I know Apple always do USA first (I live in the UK) so that is never great but as they are based in America it makes sense. Street view was US only (even California only) for quite a while as I recall.

The stuff you did not even mention is the stuff that has really made it better to use for me. I guess everyone is different.

I agree that is annoying if you have a separate none build in email or browser.

Don't spoil it with tinfoil hat speculation at the end :( YOu have some great points but lets leave the Apple conspiracy theories alone they do nothing but cause the thread to be derailed again.

With still months away from release and seeing all the features in Jelly Bean.

Hopefully Apple is has some secrets up their sleeves to counter Jelly Bean.

Its very unlikely to have any features that developers can't already access. The whole reason for iOS6 betas is so developers can prepare. If Apple hide the killer features from view then no applications will take advantage of them.

Also Jellybean adoption is very slow as an overall percentage of Android user base. Less than 10% of Android phones were running ICS in June 2012 and the adoption rate from Google announcing it to it being the most popular Android version is measured in years (about 1.5) at the moment.

I don't see any huge features that make Jelly Bean way better than iOS6 but I admit I have not tried it out myself (Jelly Bean) on a phone yet.

Why would you turn off your Wifi? It's not like the radio is consuming a lot of power when it's not transmitting/receiving.

Neither do I. Most of the "JB is cool" crowd are talking up Google Now as if it's something more than voice enabled Google Search.

I still have not seen Google's voice search or Sir,i for that matter, handle more complex utterances or delegation.

When it comes to Android versus iOS the thing I like most about iOS is Apple's clear understanding that it is a robust development platform that fuels the creativity needed to propel a Instagram like company to success.

iOS 6 isn't sexy when it comes to user centric features but I'm liking the backend a lot. Eager to see what devs do with collection views, speedier animation and more gpu stuff.

Why would you turn off your Wifi?

It's a killer feature, one of the reasons iOS6 is so underwhelming and Android Jelly Bean is amazing. Being able to skin your phone UI and disable your wifi and bluetooth at a moments notice cannot be under estimated!

Huge library of software and simple UI be damned I want me wifi toggle damn it :)

I see your point. I have not tried Jelly Bean yet, but I heard they have a new interface (peanut butter?) that is just as smooth as IOS, which I always hated my cumbersome Gingerbread phone.

From what I understand what will be released in IOS 6, isn't anything new that I believe my buggy Droid 3 didn't, (except the wallet app) and that was on Gingerbread.

That's a shame that Android updates rely on the carriers (unless its a Nexus I believe). But I think Google will change that policy, since Windows phone competition is on the rise.

Still right now though, Apple has my business.

The map systems entire point is that is gets fed by user data. Right now it only has a million or so devices feeding into it because it is a BETA. Why do you think this wont massively scale once hundreds of millions of devices start feeding into the system?

I feel like people should at least understand the limitations of using crowdsourcing based technologies when they are still way under the scale its designed for. Or to put it simply, its a BETA! Let it get released and watch how good it really gets.

Google has no say in it. The carriers control the updates on everything save for the Nexus. Google sold Android down the river a long time ago.

Here's a good read on how Google caved early

Interesting information. Google screwed themselves over on that one.

Now with prepaid getting more popular and contracted plans are getting ridiculous, unlocked phones demand are on a rise. I think that will change the game, Especially Samsung are creating some nice unlocked Google phones like the Galaxy Nexus (although currently banned).

Yes there's a lot of people now talking about buying their next phone unlocked. People are getting tired of carrier gouging.

For instance LTE is great! But LTE on a 2GB capped plan isn't all that special IMO. LTE should be coming with a marked increase in data (4GB minimum IMO) yet we're getting attempts to get rid of our unlimited and move down to a measly 2-3GB standard.

Been nearly 2 months since I posted this thread and the poll numbers crept up from 45% to nearly 48%

Not looking good for Apple this year, guys.

Yeah, that would have more credence with me if:

1.) The OS was released and not still a beta that only legitimate developers should be using.
2.) This topic was not brought up every year. Every year there is the "Apple screwed up", "this is when Apple will explode/fail/fall apart/make a bad move" etc threads
3.) The poll was not taken using MacRumors users who are far from representative of the general iOS user base.
4.) 3% is not statistically significant based on the poll numbers. (~40 out of 1300+ votes)
5.) The poll question was skewed towards the negative outcome.

I prefer to wait and see what the general public think, this debate has been fun but I am under no illusions that your average iOS would care one bit about this debate :)

Yes because ALL computer analysts come to Macrumors to read user submitted polls as a prime determiner of Apple success.

Cali

Prove to me you've been correct before and perhaps I'll bite but for now I don't think you really understand what iOS 6 offers nor the relevant technology behind it.

Let's just wait for the end of the year to see how Apple fared with the iPhone 5 and iOS6 combo. I guarantee that every major publication will take note of a significant drop in sales for iPhone and an increase in sales for Android and WP8 handsets.

Everything Apple has been doing this year so far is clearly an indication that they're slacking off and enjoying their loyal userbase. However, Steve is gone, some of their "magic" is gone and Apple can no longer sell themselves very well. Just look at their Celebrity and Genius ads. They're even failing in the Marketing department where they typically do well.

This will be the year that iPhone will be considered stagnant. Just watch.

September 12th really is a make-or-break day for Apple, it seems.

There's a definite shift going on nowadays in the smartphone market and whether it continues depends on how good the iPhone 5 is and whether they announce new features with iOS 6.
