I waited in line on April 3, 2010 for the launch day iPad 1. I'm over due to upgrade and can not wait for the iPad 5. While I think the current body style looks good, I like the original better. I think the mini-like design is perfect, I can't wait to see it on the iPad 5.

You should definitely see a performance jump then and if you're using it for work related purposes, I would suggest upgrading. Don't limit yourself.

Also, have you considered using an app or do you use an app called PDF Expert? I use it for my business and I would never use anything else. On top of being able to add signatures, initials, highlight text, and adding notes, and text, you can also sync it up automatically with Dropbox.

This makes life so much easier. I put Dropbox on my PC. I put PDF Expert and Dropbox on my iPad. Now I never have to sync again. Just open PDF Expert and the files are all right there after it quickly updates.

It's truly magical.

My apologies for not replying earlier. I'm using 5.1.1 and have never yet seen a crash. I don't know what one looks like.

As I say, I use it every single day. I read newspapers/magazines and keep up with the local and international news. I play a few games and use Safari to visit the various forums to which I subscribe. I have two or three tabs open and don't have any trouble.

So, why would I change to something which does the same but costs a whole lot more?

For those that still have great iPad (1st gen) and says it runs perfectly, may I ask what iOS you are on?

I'm curious to know if my strategy will continue to work. My theory is that because the new iOS is optimized for the latest generation iDevices, the older devices will naturally have more trouble running the newer version. My iPad 2 is still on iOS5 because of this reason. I'm afraid to update as it may slow down the device.

Thoughts? Sorry if I thread-jacked...

You are right to be afraid. Reading the comments from people trying to run iOS7 on older devices sounds exactly like the trouble I have with iOS5 on iPad1. Some people seem to get lucky, but my iPad runs like crap these days. Also who remembers any benefits to iOS6? Maps, and what was that ticket thing again?

Got mine with the verizon clearance before ioad 2 and its still clunking along I also own ipod toch 5thgen and galaxy s4 so my need for the ipad right now has been mostly netflix and reading I am contemplating an uograde this time around though

Like many people have said, my ipad 1 is running into problems with web pages, and apps. Facebook is dire, netflix is fickle, it crashes when automatically changing episodes, some of my games are stuttery as hell now. So I think I'll get an iPad 5 and pass the 1st gen one on to my kids (5 & 2) the stuff they play is fine on it

What makes you want to change?

For me, it's the limited RAM, which is why Safari and Chrome have to reload every tab when there's more than one open, and why apps often crash. The battery life is still as good as when it was new.

I'll probably switch to whatever replaces the Nexus 10 or maybe the Surface 2.

Nexus, maybe, if you don't mind changing up ecosystems. They're nice tablets.

The Surface, though, don't waste your money or time. Unless you are throwing down $1,200 or up to get the Pro model with usable space, and REALLY have a need to run x86 programs directly on the device...

I use an RDP (Remote Desktop) client called Splashtop on my iPad to get into my Windows 8 PC. You run a Splashtop program on the Windows PC, and they work together to give you the Surface experience on your iPad. That's what I use when I need to run Quicken or some other PC only program.

For what a Surface Pro costs, I'd try the iPad/Splashtop thing first before throwing down that kind of cash.

Also, the keyboard/cover kind of sucks, in my opinion. Hard to type on, but YMMV.

Agreed. I really like the Nexus 10, but it's almost a year old, so I might as well wait to see what Google announces on Oct. 14. My phone is a Nexus 4, and I really like it, to the point that I'd consider the N10.

iPad 1 is a great device if you are looking for simplicity. It is harder to break than the later models(great if you have kids).

I wont be upgrading until something groundbreaking comes from an upgrade. The 2->3->4 upgrades were not spectacular.

i didn't know any of this. thanks for posting. is this true? my 6 year old (my oldest) uses the ipad 1 all the time. my wife and i have laptops so the ipad is more or less a toy. my wife uses it sometimes when she cooks or for music while she works on her laptop but otherwise it's an angry-birds vehicle.

i was thinking of getting my wife the 5 for christmas but i hope it's as durable (or close to it) as that ipad 1 because that thing has really been to the wars.

Too slow

I use my iPad for writing. I write thousands and thousands of words a week and contribute to about 20.000 word edits in the same amount of time. My iPad 1 is too slow even for Pages now.

I am looking to get an iPad mini with a keyboard case to replace my 1 and a 5 for use in the studio to check focus for photographs.

I used a 1st gen iPad for a week back in August, and it was terrible. It was slow, and apps would crash every time I used it. I wasn't able to download many apps because it was still on iOS 5. If I owned the 1st gen iPad, I'd upgrade that **** ASAP.

i have an ipad but barely use it. however my children both have first gen ipads that were bought on release day and even they have started to complain about lag, crashes, bugs and the lack of a gyroscope. mind you my son is 9 now and is starting to want to play flight sim etc.
he currently hijacked my old iphone5 while he waits for Santa
my daughter is 8 and cant play the latest cooking mama because of the lack of ability to update the os any further.

time to bite the bullet and buy 2 more.

have to say though.. they have been brilliant things and the batteries are still good.

Typing this on my first gen 32GB 3G model. I would love to upgrade but not sure if I will. It still works fine. Not as great as it did with iOS 3.2-4 because I run now iOS5.

Got my iPad1 a few months after launch, 64gb wifi and it's used every day. It replaced my MacBook (MacMini, iPhone, iPad). It has slowed down and crashes quite a bit especially in Safari. Too many aps don't work with iOS 5, quite disappointed that Apple hasn't at least updated the UI.

I intend to upgrade to the 5, I've been pleasantly surprised to see what I could sell the 1 for so that makes going to a 5 easier, depending on prices I will go 32GB wifi. Having been using iPhone personal hotspot and more recently a mobile wifi device I see no reason to go with a 4G iPad - too restrictive and expensive.

Mine is still being bashed around the house by my two little girls. I got when the oldest was 6 months old an she still uses it today at 3.5 y/o. It bent, scratched, and full of kids apps but works like new.

You have to really shove the 30-pin in because the hole is squashed (don't ask me why). And it's been thrown, dropped, stood on, kicked. It's like and old dog ;) takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'.

My wife and I have iPad 3's but the kids don't touch these.

We still use our 1st gen and use it everyday. It does crash a lot and we no longer add any new apps. Just browse the web and use the remote app.

Thinking about upgrading to the 4th gen when the 5 comes out, just to save some dough.

Yep, my iPad 1 is still used daily, and has great battery life.

The safari crashes are more and more annoying. Less annoying than spending $500+ on a new one, so I've kept using the iPad 1.

I haven't had any reason to upgrade before that makes $500+ worth it. But iTunes Radio is one that's pushing me over the top. Since iOS 7 came out, I now use iTunes Radio every day on my phone, and sometimes my iPad (which is stuck in iOS 5 and can't get Radio) doesn't come out much.

Plus, many of the games my daughter wants to play won't work on the iPad 1. So, my upgrade path looks to be iPad 1 -> iPad 5.

I just sold mine last week. I'm so ready to upgrade! I originally bought a refurb 16gb iPad 1, Wifi. and never had any issues with it until it started crashing and loading tabs so slow. I think I'm going all the way to 128 gb Wifi. There are also several apps I own that I can't update because I can't get ios 6 on it.

I'm pretty psyched! I already miss my 1 and I'll only be without it a month or so.

I got my Ipad 1 the week it came out and I still use it every day. Its definitely showing its age in speed, especially on the web. Just today Safari crashed twice while on CNN. While I am still happy with it I am excited to upgrade this year to the 5 or maybe a mini depending on its specs.

Definitely looking forward to a better browsing experience, lighter device, slight smaller form facter as well as the speed bump.

Where did you sell? I am looking at doing the same thing possible. Unless its $25 then I'll just keep it and re-purpose it else where.

I upgraded to the 3 at launch and then again quickly to the 4 and sold the 3.

My daughter and wife use the original 64gb 1 and I will get them a 5 and keep my 4 as I have nice accessories and still like it a lot.

The 5 should take care of them for a while and they will appreciate the camera and gyroscope and updated OS.

Yup, done are my days of random crashes, slow load times, 1 tab open at a time, and force quitting any apps before opening the next one. Oh yeah, the random keyboard lagg spikes won't be missed either! iPad 5 can't come soon enough!
I did jailbreak my iPad 1 after iOS 6 came out (no more updates for it), got rid of extra language files, this helped with the keyboard lag quite a bit. But, especially now that I have iOS 7 on my iPhone 5 and many apps require iOS 6, these things you mention are getting a bit tiresome.
Those who say its runs perfectly, what OS are you running?
^Yeah, this^^ ...has to be iOS 3 or 4 ...5 on iPad 1 is laggy and app crashy

I really think iPad 1s that work perfectly are on iOS 3 or 4, people that don't update it. 5 is laggy, but, I put up with it for iCloud and app compatibility, though, that is turning into a need for iOS 6 for most newer apps now.

I wouldn't put iOS 7 on iPad 2, I've been watching comments since the betas and (had betas on my iPhone 5 also), iPad 2 sounds laggy/slow with iOS 7. If you can find a way to do it, maybe iOS 6, but maybe someone with iOS 6 on their iPad 2 could chime in here?

iPad 1, iOS 5.1.1, Safari crashes a lot, apps crash, laggy, but not intolerable. I do prefer the bigger screen for some apps, including Words With Friends. It's still pretty good at video, books, music. In fact, to my surprise, Pandora finally updated their app and made it compatible with iPad 1 & iOS 5!! It's fantastic, works just like on my computer, all functions are there that are there in iPhone...I can change my shuffle, settings, etc. Until the latest update for iOS 7, I could play my stations and shuffle, add new stations, but couldn't change the shuffle list or get into my profile or settings at all, it was pretty limited.

(Screenshots of Pandora on my iPad 1, iOS 5.1.1 NOTE: I have changed the font on my iPad (it's jailbroken)).

Thanks for the tip! I'm jailbroken too so I'm temped to look into that. Although with today's news of an Oct 22 Keynote date maybe I'll just hold off and not mess anything up!
