I actually have my eyes on the next mini.

My iPad 1 crashes a ton, with all tasks, and 16GB isn't enough room.

With the new Ipads coming I decided to play around with the Ipad 1 to see if I could fix the slowness and the crashing of Safari.

So I reset my ipad and deleted all content. I then did a complete restore of the most current OS on the Ipad 1 (5.1.1 I think I don't have it in front of me) and then set the ipad up as new (not from a back up) and the Safari crashing is gone.

In fact I have noticed a significant boost in speed all around. It feels brand new. My comic Zeal app had sometimes a 2+ second delay on page turns. After the restore its now almost instant except when there are double page spreads and that is about 1 second.

I also only installed a hand full of apps. I just have on it curently
Dropbox
Comic Zeal
Kindle
DS File
Youtube (new app along with the orginal preloaded)
X-men arcade

All the apps are older versions as they all have been updatedto the newer 6 and 7 IOS. Thankfully the app stores will automatically download the correct version for your OS. My iTunes would not let me load the apps as it had the newer versions. I had to get them from the app store.

So if anyone is having problems maybe a restore and a fresh set up can get you a little more life out of your ipad. I will still be getting the new 5 When its out but now I am making plan to re-purpose the 1 somewhere now that it is back up and running at 100%.

I either will make it a media player for my office, streaming content from my synology NAS or put it in the kitchen for the same purpose for my wife.

I like what sracer did with his from post 6 and I hope to do something similar.

Yep, still have my 1st gen, day-1 iPad 1. Here's how I'm using it today:

Image

I gutted out a 1975 Philco TV and inserted the iPad to play vintage TV shows and commercials in a looping video playlist... a video digital picture frame of sorts.

Still using my iPad 1, 64GB 3G on a daily basis, and despite the occasional crash and slow load times it still performs adequately for my needs. However, I now see more and more apps that require iOS6 or later so I'll be upgrading to an iPad 5 as soon as I can after the 22nd. I don't think 3 1/2 years is bad for a CE device.

iOS 5.1.1 jailbroken

Works great except for bloated websites. As soon as Safari opens a website that is full of codes and ads it crashes.

I want the upgrade mostly because of the retina display and the camera as to scan book pages at the library and highlight them straight away.

My kids use iPad1 with iOS6. It was a mistake to update to that version, and no way am I updating them to IOS7.

I remember how snappy the iPad1 was with the original iOS release, and it just got slower and slower as IOS versions incremented. The new features weren't worth the slow down. Which is why my Ipad3 will stay on iOS6.

You mean iOS 5.1.1? iOS6 is not compatible with the iPad1

As Ali G would put it: RESPEC!
Hahaha! Thanks! :)

I can't tell you what a conversation piece it is when people come to visit. Kids are drawn to it mesmerized by this odd ancient-looking piece of equipment... wondering who is this kid and his robot friend? Adults are also caught up in the nostalgia, reminiscing of eating Fruit Loops, feetie pajamas, and drinking Tang.

Lots of fun. I'm now starting to plan my "programming" for the holiday season... :)

Seems like iOS 5.1.1 software brought back the Safari crash issues after 5.1 initially fixed it.

Could be. My ipad 1 is on ios 5.0.1 and Safari is pretty stable. And for those saying safari crashes or can't load heavy websites - try Opera Browser - at least for complex websites.
I have Opera 7.0.3 and since the rendering is done in the cloud - no matter how heavy the website is - the Opera can load it and without any stuttering or slowdowns. And another thing - it can load many tabs simultaneously, without reloading. Back and forward the same - no reloading.

mine was jailbroken and I loved the jail break. The device just recently became un-usable and not with out it everything runs smooth. After the restore not a single page has crashed for me yet.
What pages are you going to that are crashing it? I'd like to test. maybe the jailbreak could be causing it.

Does Opera now provide a way to sync bookmarks across multiple devices, such as the iPad and iMac? When I used it, Opera Link didn't extend to the iPad.

I'd love to see what you put up. It is a fantastic piece you put together. I hope to make one 1/2 as nice. I'd loop old Godzilla movies and Hanna Barbara Cartoons.

Surprised you kept iPad 1 on 5.0.1 software as that is bad for fps especially for games and poor battery life. iOS 5.1 improved that aspect for all iOS devices.

Try going to http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/features/ and see if that crashes Safari.

I also use Opera at times but the problem is not all sites work properly because of no javascript and gifs will not work either. Also you have to really zoom in to read compared to Safari even in landscape because the default font size is too small with no customization available.

Guarantee this page will crash Safari: http://www.apple.com/iphone-5s/features/ Amazing that Apple's own site crashes it's own devices.... It crashes on my touch 4g on 5.1.1 and the specs are similar to iPad 1.

If it doesn't crash then restoring iPad 1 through iTunes and setting up as new device (which I suggested earlier in this thread) clearly fixes all the Safari crashing on iOS 5.1.1 firmware. 95% of the people here seem to have issues with Safari crashing and this may be the solution. Although annoying to lose all app data, at least performance will be stable.

I still believe iOS 5.1 is more stable and smooth compared to iOS 5.1.1 which I believe has a javascript memory leak and thus all the crashing. I say this because when 5.1 was released, many were saying the Safari crashing stopped on iPad 1, touch 4g, and other iOS devices.

Some games just run too slow (COD Zombies) for the kids so I will probably spring for new iPad minis for them.

The iPad is still perfect as an internet appliance, to read iBooks and to run instructional videos, etc. I expect to keep it for years to come. I use it along with some newer models I have bought since I first got the iPad 1 in 2010. Can't do Skype without a camera!

There is something awesome about still using the original iPad that changed the computing world.

yes, you are right, 5.1.1. Either that (or slowing flash memory with age) has slowed it down to a crawl. Kids don't seem to mind, but the response lag drives me nuts.

I've been looking to replace my 1st Gen wifi iPad for a couple months and have been obsessively refreshing macrumors and android central.

When the specs for the 2014 Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 were released I thought I was 100% all in on that device seeing as I use a Galaxy 3 phone and have lots of paid for android apps. The specs of 3GB of RAM, super hi res screen, 10:16 aspect ratio and ability to add 64 GB of micro SD card storage were the appealing features.

Then a couple days before the release of the '14 Galaxy Note 10.1 a lot of the tech gadget reviewers were stating their reservations about the lagginess and semi complicated UI.

It stopped me in my tracks but I wanted to experience it for myself so I went to Best Buy this morning to see for myself.

I rendered the same web page on the Note 10.1, iPad 4 and Nexus 7.

The iPad 4 and Nexus 7 both loaded the page smoothly and scrolling was smooth as butter. The 2014 Note 10.1 was noticeably choppy compared to the two.

The Note 10.1 is $550 for the 16GB version and $600 for the 32GB. A huge disappointment when you looked at the specs the Note 10.1 was packing to see it underperform last year's iPad. The Note has some interesting features with the sPen but I believe the Touchwiz Samsung software is precisely what is bogging down the tablet.

So I'll be waiting to see what the Google Nexus 10 refresh brings and stack it against the iPad 5. The Nexus offering the pure android experience with the same specs as the Samsung Note 10.1 without all the Samsung "bloatware" may provide a great 10 inch tablet experience but you can bet I'll be waiting and trying all of these devices in the store side by side before I make my decision.

I don't care what the specs on the Galaxy Note 10.1 read. After using it and seeing that poor performance in relation to last year's iPad, you can throw the specs out the window.

Still responds faster than my iPhone on iOS 7 :D

I don't feel iOS 7 was made with the iPad in mind... which ironically, it should have been, and iOS 1-6 shouldn't have been.

I don't think I use the iPad enough to warrant an upgrade unless it actually gets too bad to use or fails entirely in some way. If I did replace it, it'd be with a mini of some kind.

I don't understand? I thought the iPad 1 Safari crash issues was fixed with iOS 5.1 firmware? I know that when Apple released iOS 5, Safari crashing was widespread on iPad 1 and even some iPad 2 users. Also other devices such as iPod touch 4g had this problem.

Seems like iOS 5.1.1 software brought back the Safari crash issues after 5.1 initially fixed it.

Do iPad 1 users remember when 5.1 came out and how stable Safari was? Or was 5.1 and 5.1.1 the same? Maybe a full DFU restore using iTunes and set up as new device may fix the bugs.

Safari crashes because the iPad only had 256 MB of RAM. No iOS update can get the modern web running crash free with such little RAM.

I do applaud Apple for creating a device that can reasonably manage on those resources though.

I disagree. It "crashes" because iOS idiotically CLOSES the active safari app (along with other open apps) when memory use hits the threshold. A much smarter approach would be to close non-active apps and have safari monitor available memory and STOP downloading when memory use approached the limit.

Impossible you say?

Then why is it that iCab and Atomic web browsers both manage to do that? Atomic flashes a warning to close open tabs when you get in trouble, and both are infinitely more stable then safari on iOS 5.1.1.

It wouldn't be impossible, but Apple doesn't need to spend time keeping older hardware running smoothly; to do so would delay customer purchases of new hardware, contribute to platform fragmentation, and hurt their bottom line.

Damn, Safari crashed the first two times and when I open it a third time all 8 tabs were lost. And now I don't know what they were.

I also don't use Opera because I either keep forgetting about it, or Safari is good enough, but this time I tried that Apple link and it went super fast and smooth. And as I said - multiple tabs loaded were all ready without reloading. Especially when pressing back and navigating it was like I had a much newer ipad.

In my case the font on Macrumors was bigger in Opera than in Safari. But the layout was different - maybe the mobile version of macrumors.

I recently replaced a first-gen Time Capsule with a latest-gen AirPort Extreme, and the stronger signal has made a noticeable difference in my iPad 1's stability. For example, fewer apps crash. My guess is that the stronger signal means one fewer thing for the iPad's OS-overloaded processor and RAM to deal with.

Now that we know The specs and pricing of the new "Air" and "Mini" who is still upgrading?

I will be but I am not sure which to get now. Before I was set on the ipad 5 (now air)

Here are my pro's

Mini Pro's
1. Same Specs as the Air
2. Lighter
3. Higher PPI
4. Perfect size for book reading

Air Pro's
1. larger screen
2. Better for web browsing
3. better for comic book reading
4. Out sooner
5. 1Lb (way down from my ipad 1)
