I didn't know there were rules to tablet development to begin with. You can smear lipstick on this pig but the iPad 2 is still DOA compared the rest of the lot shipping around the same time or shortly after. Apple is typically behind in hardware and it shows again. iOS5 is probably the only saving grace. New buys may continue to buy the ipad2, however, Apple's repeat business may suffer if all they're offering is a tiny bump as expected. And Apple thrives on repeat business. Fanboys need not buy this non-magical fruit-themed device.

Okay I'm sorry but this is ridiculous. If the iPad ships, as expected, with a multi-core processor, a revised screen (same resolution but improved quality), 512Mb and camera(s) for facetime... how is it behind the competition in any serious way? The practical difference between a 1200x800 screen and the 1024x768 in the iPad is almost non-existant, 512Mb versus 1Gb is only relevant if there's software that actually NEEDS that memory (which isn't the case in iOS), the cameras are good enough for video chat and that really is just about all most 10" tablets will ever use them for... the list goes on and on. How on earth you can claim with a straight face that the iPad would be DOA with the rumoured specs I have no idea.

Actually I'd say the "Apple is typically behind in hardware" line is nonsense too. Yes, they don't usually go for the most powerful kit available but there are trade offs for that in ways that are FAR more valuable in the real world, namely power consumption, heat and size. The Xoom is a good example of the difference here, a lot of power under the hood but battery life significantly worse than the iPad as a trade off and very little real world difference in the vast majority of tasks. Saying Apple have different priorities in hardware than most manufacturers (and spec nerds) would be far more accurate but that doens't mean they're 'worse'.

no iPhone 5 no iOS 5. Please don't start adding new rumors on this one. this is just the iPad 2 (the same machine you own today with a camera..... that's it.) worry for the iPad 3... (it will be the revision B) ok?

Just like iOS 3.0 and iOS 4.0 weren't shown to developers pre-launch of the respection iPhone in those years.

The screen is the #1 battery burner when the device is on. When the device is in standby, the #1 battery burner is DRAM refresh. So you want half the standby life on your iPad? That's shorter by 2 weeks less battery life!

Um, that would only be true if refreshing the DRAM is the ONLY thing that happens when in standby. I don't know about your iPad, but mine uses WiFi when in standby to retrieve my mail and other notifications.

I'm pretty sure the WiFi usage in standby mode uses up a lot more power than DRAM refreshes....

I'm happy to hear that the A5 will provide dual core, but I wish more RAM (1GB instead of 512MB) was going in to allow developers more room to stretch their legs.

Of course, a 4x jump for RAM over the 256MB in my iPad rev1 would increase the chances I might get shut out of some cool apps. On that topic, I wonder how long before my iPad can't run many apps. Hopefully, I still have a few more good years. I love the thing!

im totally with you on being skeptical about what this guy says. But he does have a point, I hadnt noticed it but he is right one side is very clearly more dotted than the other. Thats definitely not a printing error. So idk, although I find retina iPad 2 very unlikely.
+1...great observation!

How is 8+ hours "significantly" worse than the ipad's for video? Dude, you're grasping at straws here. Very little real world difference? Have you run benchmarks on tasks? What majority of tasks are you talking about? Who defines those tasks? I mean it's one thing to enjoy your ipad, but it's another thing to write baseless claims. The main thing ipad has on honeycomb tablets is iOS. iOS has been refined over the years. Android is still relatively new, compared to iOS. You have to admit the strides they've made in such a short time are commendable. If not, their sales should show you. Honeycomb is still a work in progress, where as iOS ships ready to go.

So far, reports suggest March 2 Ipad annoucement may be more of a stop-gap measure to ensure continued sales of their prized product in the face of multiple tablets hitting the market in Q2-Q3. People just need to figure out if it's worth it, or suck it up and wait for something that may come later in the year. I'm not holding my breath.

The bottom line is a faster processor/more RAM ensures it's more futureproof for those applications/games which will require more. Be realistic here. Judge the apps that FIRST came out on an ipad to some of the newer ones now. The latest ones are more robust because they had time with the hardware and SDK to make some killer apps. Given time, a faster dual/quad proc and more RAM, you're going to see things on tablets (as a whole) that haven't been done with ipad 1.0. All blind fanyboyism aside, you have to agree with that. Things we can do with our phones, laptops, tablets, desktops and gaming systems were not even thought of even 5-10 years ago because the hardware and software wasn't available. Now that it is, embrace it, regardless of silly loyalty to a single brand. This is going to be a cool and interesting year for portable devices and I'm surely going to keep an open mind about it.

Doesnt anybody else notice that one side has few dots (pixels) while the other side has double the dots?!? I think we will get the retina display still!

The yellow dot is touching the Apple logo. I think it is going to be available on Sprint's network. :p

Makes sense, I was thinking about it, and the only thing missing in Apples line up is an iOS device that is VERY fast, as in perfectly stutter free with ANY game, any app etc.

iPad 2's job should be to fill this hole.

And less than a week later, a developer will have a game out that forces the system to stutter at times. And in the meantime, the battery life has gone down the crapper because of the added cpu clock and RAM.

"What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague "engineering issues" which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour."

Of all the comments I've read, I hope this is the farthest from the truth. While I don't like Mr. Jobs' demeanor and treatment of employees and underlings, I do have to admit he appears to be the perfectionist everyone portrays. That being said, I can't imagine him making an event release of a lackluster product because he had to pull features because they "weren't ready."

Either iPad 2 will be a surprise blockbuster upgrade (including Thunderbolt, better screen, 128gb option), or it will be proof that Apple is going to become a very different company in the abscense of Mr. Jobs.

Stop Crying...

Its getting old hearing people complain that the ipad/apple products are always "behind in their specs" I would take an ipad w/only 512 ram over 1 on the xoom or any other tablet because unlike the competition the ipad actually works! I've used my friends galaxy tab...its a god awful buggy p.o.s just like the phone. (the reviews for the xoom state the same...no surprise there) I love the "idea" of android, the different widgets, etc...but until they refine the system (which is super fragmented BTW) I'll stick w/apple products that work silky smooth...You geeks can tinker w/android and whine about apple being expensive for what you get, when the truth is...your just jealous that an under specked apple device runs better than your over stuffed android system encased in plastic...now if apple would just make a better notification system...:D

Wow its the MBP release thread all over again.

No retina, no 1 GB, no SD card slot?!

Complain, complain, whine, whine. Then complain some more.

Ok. Those of you saying that iPad 2 would be behind Xoom: where exactly can you use Xoom horsepower? What exact apps are using it?

I mean even Unreal engine games like Epic Citadel do not fully use iPad 1 power, so please, enlighten me.

IOS 5 will be released along with the iphone 5 not with the ipad 2

I agree, and this will happen on June 5 (Did anyone notice that March 2 = Ipad 2?). there's an already scheduled event for june 5, but the contents are secret...so far. The next ios to be launched is 4.3 wich is in beta phase.

the people with the tegra 2 CPU think their penis is bigger

I'd be surprised if we see an A5 (A9) chipset.

I'm imagining

1.2 - 1.4ghz A4 single core chipset (currently 1ghz A4)
512mb ram
SGX543 graphics (single core)
VGA & 1.3 megapixel camera

Slightly thinner, Slightly lighter, Slightly better sound from new speaker grill.

and that's about it......

If Apple goes for those specs they will get destroyed by Android tablets. iOS might be efficient, but you can only do so much with that 2009 hardware going up against Tegra 2 platforms with double the RAM. Only a complete moron would shell out $500+ for that hardware.

You still have yet to be unplugged from the Apple Matrix.;)

Am I the only one that is more interested in what the new iPad will actually DO, as opposed to what's under the hood? I have no interest in the current iPad because it has virtually no creation capabilities. Until Apple makes the iPad capable of actually doing something besides iWork (some portion of iLife perhaps), I can't justify spending that kind of money. That would require an iOS change, so I'm crossing my fingers for that...

Assuming what Engadget has said is true, then yes, the XOOM is ahead of Apple in the hardware department, and if iOS5 for iPad isn't a significant leap forward in tablet OS engineering, then the XOOM is ahead of the iPad as well in the software department.

Anybody can see this.

Uhm. "What much" exactly? You mean like Omnifocus (where is alternative for those high-speed Android tablets ?), iWork/DocsToGo etc., Epic Citadel (Android Unreal engine based games do not come close to this) etc.? I would say that it is about apps and user experience of those apps not about HW. Or you go around saying "look, I have dual core CPU"? I only go around and say "look, this game/app runs smoothly". But of course I could be completely wrong. Maybe there are some must-have tablet apps that run smoothly only on dual core and 1 GB RAM...

It is obvious. You will record your 2-hour HD video on HD camera, transfer it to the computer, then from the computer to the tablet and you will encode it there, then you will transfer it back to your computer and burn it on BlueRay. You don't know that this is must-have? ;)

(yes, that was sarcasm)

I think there will be a thunderbolt on the new iPad as it takes to long to sync a 64GB iPad and they will just increase in size on future revisions to 128GB, 256GB etc.

At first I wondered why thunderbolt doesn't use a USB socket and it dawned upon me because its too big, just like the HDMI socket. Thunderbolt is a dame small socket. I think the iPod connector will be gone soon.

I likes your thinking. Though as the cinema display doesn't support pass-thru and it's very unlikely the iPad would have pass-thru, you'd be left with a choice of plugging in your cinema display or your iPad, but not both.... :(

Maybe they'll just use a couple of lines from the 30 pin connector for thunderbolt and put a pair of thunderbolt connectors on a dock..... mmmm i likes that idea a lot. :D

haha, like we all didnt know what was gonna happen. a bump in processor speed, a bump in RAM + facetime -- its so standard from apple :apple:

i can understand why some are disappointed though, with the crazy past rumors
