If you want color the iPad screen is the best eBook screen you can find right now. Not even close to "terrible" btw. Not for me and even my aging eyes.

As a computer screen it isn't.

As a ebook platform that is supposed to replace the need to buy psysical books, it is most definately terrible.

Apple don't need the best specs - they know the product will sell anyway. :p

( A GUI that appeals to the consumer will more than make up for lack of specs ).

I 100% agree with you, but it seems like a wasted opportunity to stay ahead of everyone else.

I hope iOS5 brings:

Widgets - They are so handy, and if you don't want to use them, don't.

New notification system - hopefully like on Android, a pull down status bar. If they combine multitasking switcher with a pull down status like like HTC Desire HD has, it's going to be brilliant.

FoxhoundADAM - like they 'wont' put quad cores in MBP?

I agree to be honest, seems unlikely. But the Apple invite, Yerba Buena design and reported increase in panel cost for the new iPad all point to something special.

Still, not long to wait and see whether it's some of us who are double or quadruple dense, or the new iPad display : )

Well how long did it take tehm to adoby Quad Cores? About a year longer than they could have, IMO. Although I'm not in the market for MBP so I never weighed in on those rumors really.

But it's good business sense for them to slow their updates as much as possible. It keeps their costs lower and profits high, as long as they are still finding enough customers with each release. It just sucks for us techies who want the best and want it now.

I don't care about the hardware specs versus other tablets. I want to see innovation on the software side. Hoping to see some kind of iOS 5 preview that is a big jump in functionality next week.

i think

my guess is the new ipad will be exactly like a mbp screen removed from the laptop. Same thickness, weight etc. should be nice.

It's typical when someone like the NHS, or any Governmental body forks out for something new and shiny, they go for the crap. They should have developed their own NHS iPad app, that allowed hospital employees to sign in, make notes about patients conditions etc, and upload the changes directly to the NHS Patient Database from the iPad.
There's no money for that. There's not even enough money for the equipment and staff that the NHS really needs, the last thing we need is iPads. Let's start with things like catheter bags and linen and nurses and then maybe if there's some money left we can pick up some luxury consumer electronics.

I 100% agree with you, but it seems like a wasted opportunity to stay ahead of everyone else.

They are ahead.

Apple's GUI has always been 100% GPU accelerated, which is one of the reasons it's so responsive. Every app using the standard UIKit calls will benefit from it.

Honeycomb has introduced a low-level API for hardware acceleration. But existing apps don't use it. And I suspect even the Honeycomb interface isn't using it.

Even with three times the CPU power, Android apps will perform sluggishly compared to their iPad equivalents - until they are all recoded.

I get the FaceTime camera, but why the other one?

Who is using something the size of an iPad to take pictures?

Funny you say that... All of the reviews I've read on the Moto Xoom have said that while the back facing camera is nice, no one can see using it. The reviewers all felt like idiots running around outside with something that large trying to take pictures. I was at a Karaoke bar last night and tried imagine filming one of my friends with something that size. It's really not practical. About the only time I can see it useful is if you're sitting on the couch reading using it and your kid or your dog is doing something funny and you can quickly capture a picture or video. Otherwise... you're phone is much more practical.

If it were an optional feature that could save me a few dollars, I'd probably not even buy a model with it. Front facing camera yes. Rear... well, it's the size of a lot of people's rears.

I'm guessing that you have absolutely no idea wtf you're talking about. RAM barely uses any battery, I don't think anyone will be too concerned with 5 minutes less battery life.

I see both your points, but if 1G of ram were available, developers would probably start making more advanced apps to take advantage of that extra power as well as taking advantage of any additional processing power. That would affect battery life.

I'd rather give up an hour of 2 of battery life and have more advanced, feature rich apps. Right now the only thing that really sets the iPad apps apart from their iPhone/touch counterparts is screen real estate and some extra polish. More screen more view, not more app. The iPad needs to stand out much as Honeycomb was designed to do. Crippled hardware will slow innovation imo.

Heavy iPad Users Know Why Most Of Us Will Buy An iPad 2

You'd have to be pretty stupid to buy an iPad 2 if you already have the first. (Assuming the cpu/ram are the only major differences)
Wow, I'll take that as an insult. So since when did you decide what my priorities are? And what I want to spend my money on.

If the only difference in iPad 2 was the cameras, I would upgrade.

If the only difference was thinner and lighter, I would upgrade

If the only difference was the new CPU and Ram I would upgrade,

If the only difference was the new gpu, I would upgrade.

So yea I am definitely upgrading
Me too. Those of us who have become iPad addicts since day one of its availability know its shortcomings. I experience crashes regularly due to the size of the system RAM. And I desperately need more storage RAM. My 1414 apps are taking up 43GB leaving me with only about 17GB for everything else. So I would really like a 128GB iPad 2 which I would gladly pay a thousand dollars for.

Since I got my 3G iPad on May 5th, I have lost all interest in my MacBook Pros. I spend many hours each day with my iPad. It has become my best and most loyal friend. I am a charter Mac adopter since early 1984. Nothing Apple has ever produced has so utterly changed my lifestyle as has the iPad. I am not stupid. But I am a fool in love with my iPad and plan to buy every top of the line iteration of it until I die because of the impact it has had on my life. For many it may not be that big a deal. But for me it has become a life changing miracle I want to experience in it's newest form always.

Plus has anyone noticed that the cost of buying the new one and selling the previous model will probably amount to a total cost of about $100-$200? Hardly much of a hit to keep having the latest greatest computing-media tool to ever come to market. :)

Can compete on price? The Xoom is $70 more than the iPad @$799 for the 32G 3G model. The iPad is $729. That $70 gets you dual cameras, 1G of ram, dual core processor, etc. A version without 3G is being released for $599, the exact price of the iPad it correlates too, most likely still outspecing the iPad 2. And this is Moto who doesn't have the resources to get the component costs a computer company does that buys in larger volume like Dell, HP, Toshiba, all coming out with tablets.

If you think Apple's competition isn't ready to go for the jugular you're crazy. The only competing device that was really a fail was the Galaxy Tab. Which now has been marked down very cheap nearly everywhere. I think Samsung learned a lot from that venture, and it will be interesting to see if the new 10" Galaxy will price better, or if they learned not to sell exclusively through wireless companies. These devices need to be in the main retail sector: Best Buy (not via mobile), Target, Wal-Mart, etc.

Toshiba has been really pulling out the guns in their marketing against apple. (thetoshibatablet.com) I'm betting they attack on price too. And don't forget, Apple buys all their components (with the exception of processors), they don't manufacture them or buy the volume of some companies. I don't think you understand how purchasing works. And Apple buys many of the parts they use (like displays) from companies who are actually about to release tablets. I think if you can afford to sell Apple parts, you're probably able to get them for yourself cheaper since you wouldn't sell Apple those parts if you weren't making money doing so. That's another caveat. Apple's competitors still get a benefit to the iPad's success selling parts, even if the profit is smaller.

Of course the iPad 2 will sell like hotcakes, and any Apple loyalist will pay the Apple tax gladly. But don't be naive. The tablet wars haven't really even begun just yet. No one is giving release dates or pricing... I think they're all waiting for the iPad 2. After next week, I think we're going to see all the competition come out with guns blazing.

Nah. The iPad 2 will sell like hotcakes. Android tablets can't compete on price like their phones do on the carriers. Where they are practically given away. In some cases ARE given away. Lets keep in mind these are rumors btw. people act like because Engadget said it then its set in stone. First they report sd slot and all that from unreliable sources then they tear down their own strawman. Typical Engadget laziness, sloppiness, and page view/linkbait wh*ring. 512MB ram is fine. 1GB may make people feel better but its not needed.

Doesnt anybody else notice that one side has few dots (pixels) while the other side has double the dots?!? I think we will get the retina display still!

Oh.... nice catch. That is a very interesting theory!!!

I don't think we will see a new notification this time around. I am hoping for it but I don't think we will see. I hope they prove me wrong thou!!!

I hope for a much faster processor and a much faster graphic card.

I want 6-core Core i7 and GTX 580. :D

Hmm, that would be some pretty powerful machine. Makes the upcoming dual core a9 chip and gpu look meager.

Another person who understands.

All the companies competing on specs remind me of the time when Detroit automakers were advertising muscle cars with more and more horsepower... or the biggest SUVs... all the while foreign car makers were eating away their market share by offering auto buyers smaller engines, but better workmanship, fit and finish.

Just Imagine If...

What if Apple pulls out all the stops to make iPad 2 a killer tablet? It will basically crush the upcoming Android/WebOS tablets in their tracks and force them to go back to the drawing board and solidify Apple's lead for yet another year:

A5 dual core CPU
1 GB ram
SGX543 single core GPU
VGA & 1.3 megapixel camera
Retina IPS display with Anti Glare
Lightpeak/Thunderbolt

These specs will blow everything else out of the water and might cut into Apple's profit margin a bit, but they would continue to corner the tablet market and make the other tablets DOA.

+1

Could not have put that better myself....
