What do they mean?

PLS is 10 % Brighter than IPS and provides better viewing angles. It's a technology from samsung, and we know apple paid them a lot for parts.

Am i the only one who thinks the ipad display is bright enough ?
Better contrast and black levels are what i really care about.

Never have i sat down and though "You know, i wish the screen was brighter".

I think it should be brighter personally. But achieving better contrast and black levels like you say (which I want to) can only be done using super AMOLED technology. And mr jobs says he's not looking into using it. Which is ridiculous.

Fact is, LCD is becoming something of the past and AMOLED is for the future. Another example of Apple behind in hardware technology.

Back onto PLS, iPad 3 and iPhone 6 will likely adopt it. Here from engadget

three hints towards a retina display i've found or read in these forums that have made me a believer.
1. The invitation is not that clear on the left/top but as it goes to the right/down it becomes much clearer. This is especially apparent if you look at the big 2
2. The Yerba Buena decorations: to the left(the past) of the Apple logo the dots(pixels) are very far apart from each other but on the right(the future) the dots are very densely packed together like the pixels of a retina display are.
3. This I read from a forum member kmanmx:
"The word march at the top = 5 characters
The number 2 in the middle = 1 character
"Come see what 2011 will be the year of." = 31 characters
31 + 5 + 1 = 37
The year is 2011
2011 + 37 = 2048
2048 ? That just so happens to be the horizontal resolution of the supposed retina display (2048 x 1536)"

Is it possible that Apple has left hints for the avid fans to find but that would not be obvious to the everyday person?

That's not quite true. I agree with you, improvements in the panel can only be a good thing. But the black levels on the iPad are quite.. bad. Go look in Currys or PC World or whatever TV Stores are in the US (Dont know where you live) and there are LCD TV's with edge lit LED displays (like the iPad) with super black levels, some approaching that of Plasmas.

My thing with the letters adding up to 2048 was just proving the point that you can find a pattern in anything, i don't genuinely believe apple deliberately put it in there. But if you like to believe it, thats cool and up to you :)

I also find it interesting the BBC Television Center in London is getting it's own iPad 2 event, at the exact same time as the Yerba Buena center one in the US. The UK BBC One is 6pm GMT, and the us is 10am PST, which are the exact same time. And Stephen Fry, a british television presenter and actor who is an apple lover is presenting the BBC conference for the launch too.

The two events are quite clearly going to interact with each other, perhaps a FaceTime HD Conversation ? Or maybe they are going to say "It's available everywhere, right now". Who knows.

Has any other apple product had a launch event in the US and UK simultaneously ? I don't see why Apple would pull off such a stunt if it was such a modest upgrade.

I would agree, if Apple is going to go to the trouble to stand out, they will stand out and it is in their best interest to bury the competition swiftly with a BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

I hate when people talk about AMOLED like its Jesus' own computer screen, they are beautiful, but as of right now Samsung has proved that the screens CANNOT last.

Go to any wireless carrier and look at their phones: NEXUS S, Fascinate are what I looked at, 50% or more will has screen burn, in the notification bar, or the onscreen menu button. You may need to pull up a white screen to see it, but it is VERY obvious.

These phones are only months old and they are having these problems. I will not buy a AMOLED or SAMOLED screen phone until samsung admits and addresses the problem.

Sorry to be a downer, but virtually every product launch for the last five years has had an event at the BBC at the same time - all the UK newspaper journos go there to watch the keynotes over a satellite feed since Television Centre has a permanent transatlantic satellite link.

Stephen Fry presenting isn't so common and I suppose the call idea is possible, but I don't think Americans would know who Fry is enough.

Ah, fair enough. Never heard of it before and i've been following all apple announcements for the past 5 years. Odd. :p

Still, like you say, Stephen Fry presenting may mean something.

yes, they CAN improve the black levels by having full LED backlit display, which (I'm in the UK) £2,500 + TV's have. but again, it STILL won't be the same black levels as on an AMOLED screen.

You may or may not of heard, but Sony previewed 2 OLED tv's recently and one was 25 inch I believe and had a price of £18,000 (ouch). They compared it to an LCD tv with LED backlight to compare the black levels and the disparity is incredible. I will find the video and post it.

OLED's are fantastic 'n all, But my monitor is 22inch, LED, and cost me £150. It's black level is far better than the ipad blacks lev..ahem, grey levels.

ok, so ive heard the ipad display cost 3x more than the current, the event invitation goes from pixelated at the top to very clear at the bottom, and the banner at the event center has twice as many "dots" (pixels?) on the right. im not saying we are getting a retina display but can all these be coincidences. it just seems like Apple is setting us up here. and they just happen to send out an invitation and put up the banner with all these coincidences the day before the xoom was able to be ordered. it just seems really strange and apple always has a special feature that they put into each product. so why cant they add the high resolution display. i mean yea they might take a little profit hit but if they would sell so many more, it would offset the cost somewhat. plus all the other rumored stuff like a camera and 512 mb ram is not going to add much to the cost.

heres my guess,

-either 1.2-1.4 ghz A4 single core or 1.2 ghz dual core A5
-512 mb ram
-front and back camera. vga/1.3
-10 hour battery
-aluminum enclosure
-thinner and lighter

and the wow feature.... a high resolution display

this is exactly what i have been pointing out. i choose not to believe in the rumors about there being no retina display when apple has gone out of its way to give us clues to the contrary.

i think we are in store for an awesome event on wednesday and an incredible new ipad device.

Don't know what to make of the retina display talk. I'm not sure it's needed - or really wanted, if people are honest - but on the same ticket I wouldn't be surprised if the "no Retina and here's why" stuff came out of Cupertino to throw people off.

iOS needs a major revamp you feel, it's become too simplistic in comparison to other OS's. But doesn't have the lag of those other operating systems. With more ram coming in the iPad and iPhone, certainly can't be a better time than now to release a much more customizable, super intuitive and visually appealing software. Complete make over needed.

You know, this sounds very cliche but hear me out:

I was thinking about the iPad 2 having a retina display and thought "yeha, okay cool".But i havn't used the retina display for video on my iphone 4 since launch day, so i just put some 720p video on my iphone 4. And wow, it's just incredible. We are surrounded by bad low pixel density screens all day every day, and then to see a HD video on the retina display is truely awesome.
If the iPad 2 could get up to 260ppi at the rumoured resolution, that would be such an impressive display. Can you imagine it ? :) It would almost be breathtaking !

iPad2

Realistically, all the iPad2 needs in terms of a camera is the front facing for Facetime. Having an actual camera isn't really necessary on a tablet.

And, higher processor speed, other than 512, would be great.

Other than that, all over tablets = fail.

THere have only been a couple of events that had a stream and it seemed as if they were testing something in the process. Might be the software

or may be they just didn't want the potentially overwhelming number of PCs out there bring down the whole thing.

This time around, if they do the stream, they could be better ready. So it won't be an issue. We can only wait and see

I would agree with that opinion. A rear camera, especially a big blazing one, just seems like hype. If I was really going to film something I would want it in my hands in a firm grip to reduce shake. I just don't see getting that with a big tablet

but a camera for facetime. that would be awesome.

I would also talk, a faster processor, more ram, some kind of antiglare finish on the glass (not perhaps full on matte but perhaps something in between) and better backlighting and light sensors for outdoor use.

give me those and I don't need a retina display or rear camera.

give me dual mode 3g in one unit and a price reduction and I'd be in heaven.

No, you need a hobby.

Whoopee! A whopping 512mb of RAM? Starting to seem like Apple is content to milk it's goats over and over while laughing all the way to the bank. I'd rather a iPhone 3GS to iPhone4 type upgrade every two years vs. this nickel and dime stuff.
