is it good enough for video calling?

Hi Guys,

Is it good enough for video calling e.g. skype etc.?

Hi Guys,

Is it good enough for video calling e.g. skype etc.?

This is exactly what they were implemented for, but no.

The camera is ridiculously low quality and requires a very good light source buperiod lighting isn't usually isn't where you'd be using Skype (in bed, watching TV etc). People make excuses for why this is "good enough" but the reality is that Apple could've done better.

Imho Apple is right to put camera's in with a fair but not excellent image quality. If you want to make pictures the better alternative is a good point and shoot compact camera. They are smaller, have a larger and better ccd, better optics and a zoom, a built in flash, etcetera. You even can make movie clips and voice memo's with it. Apple draws a to what the built in camera is meant to do and making high quality photo's is beyond that limit.

I agree the camera's stink, but I think that is intentional. What's the point of a super (expensive) high quality optics in a tablet? The very idea of holding the iPad to shoot a video or photography is absurd. It's awkward as hell and clumsy no matter how good (or bad) the cameras may be. The only viable use is the front camera for videoconferencing and the like.

The camera is pretty pathetic. 3 things that surprise me about the whole thing.
1. People are so quick/obsessed to defend it. (it sucks plain and simple)
2. Both cameras are even still produced by whoever makes them. Out dated by today's technology.
3. Why would apple use such a low budget accessory for such a high-quality product?

To everyone saying "it's just a tablet". That really isn't a good argument. Ive found myself going out of the way to grab my iPhone to take a picture instead using the already in my hand iPad 2 because of quality concerns. Put down the iPad, grab the iPhone, take the picture, email the picture to myself, open the email, save the photo....etc..etc.. If the camera was half way decent that wouldnt have to happen.

That being said this is my first iPad and i love it, the ipad2 is a great device even though is has a P.O.S. camera.

Well would you be shocked if apples next tablet has a very good camera? I wouldn't. Apple is just saving upgrade opportunities. The next tablet will have a much better camera and the whole argument of a clumsy tablet taking pics/shooting video wont really exist.

Id like to throw this thread into the trash along with Lord Jobs' loyal followers in this thread.

And yes I know u can edit other things...

The cameras were not really meant for taking stills. There are such things as digital cameras out there you know.

The cameras suck. This is the fact.

But I haven't found any good use of it yet. Probably because I get used to an iPad without a camera for nearly a year. A tango call is perfect for it though.

Dont forget #4
4) Why do people assume everyone on the planet owns an iPhone to take video/pictures with? To many people the iPad is their ONLY iOS device.

Anyway, that list of things baffles me too. I dont ever use bluetooth but if it was missing then I'd be annoyed because WHEN the occasion comes that I need it, I want it there. Yet people talk about the camera as if they will never find an opportunity to take a clear photo with the iPad. They'll never have family over for a fun picture, never need to scan a document using autofocus, never have to deposit a check through an app or never be out using the iPad and wanting to use the native camera rather than go through a 30step process to transfer pictures from a separate camera.

Apple could have done better, but they didnt and its a shame because limitations in hardware impact development on future software. (Not to mention current enjoyment. Has anyone even taken a big screen photo? Its really fun and different)

No, I dont plan on using it as a camera, but it has a camera... So just checked it out and pretty pointless.. I understand apple wants to upgrade and add new features, but come on... it sucks

Works perfectly fine for what it was meant to do.

I really don't get all this complaining.

"I don't plan on using my iPad as a camera, but I'm going to complain about it anyway! Rabble rabble rabble rabble!"

I'm really annoyed on apple currently skimping on features on it's products. There products are the best, they always tought them as the best, yet they put little crappy products here and there that just ruins it. Next update they'll be touting the new offerings exceptional new camera...seriously apple stop being frugal and stingy and complete the brilliant products you make.

Why? Again, the iPad is not a camera. It's like me complaining my iSight isn't a DSLR.

Someone please justify to me why the iPad needs a better camera. Something better than "because." It's not like it's a really expensive device, and it's not like Apple is ripping you off by not including a higher quality camera. It is what it is, and a better image sensor would have made the device thicker.

Here, I'll join in: I'm angry because my point and shoot is 12 MP, and my iPhone 4 is 5. Why didn't Apple include a better camera? Rabble rabble rabble.

The camera is for Facetime, plain and simple. Apple added the ability to take stills and movies because they knew the vast majority of you would piss and moan if you couldn't take stills, no matter how crappy they turned out. Instead, you all bitch that it isn't a DSLR.

Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

Seriously, you all need to quit bitching and enjoy the iPad. If you want to have such a huge hissyfit, take the thing back and spare the rest of us from your pointless and incessant crying.

Apple's clearly done it as an no-brainer upgrade opportunity for iPad3, but it's disappointing all the same. It would be so handy to be able to quickly take a snap of a whiteboard at work after a brainstorming session, but the quality's too poor for that so I'll keep doing it with my iPhone 4 (which also has the benefit of a flash). Ditto with taking quick pics of documents, where the quality is perfectly acceptable with the iPhone but absolutely not with the iPad. I can drop all of those into Evernote on the iPhone, then pick them up on the iPad where the bigger screen makes it easier to consume the content, but it would be so much more convenient to do it all on the one device. Seems like a real missed opportunity in the business arena.

From a consumer perspective I could envisage taking pics for Ebay sales etc, but the grainy output and lack of flash rules that out. I have certain standards :)

I'd have happily paid an extra 10 or 20 quid for a decent camera to save the inconvenience of having to transfer content across multiple devices. It just seems like a cost-cut too far to me.

Do you really want to take pictures with a tablet? Really? :\

That's my viewpoint. I mean it's there. You CAN take pictures. I haven't tried the video, but I've heard it's much better. But honestly I will probably have my iPhone 4 with me at the time for either task. The front-facing camera is for FaceTime and for Photo Booth.

I've had mine since launch day and I have mostly used it for Kindle reading, various websites and news/magazine apps. Oh yeah, I also went nuts with Angry Birds Rio.

I would rather have the Retina display than a better camera. I know the issues behind it, but I'm just saying that is way more important on a tablet than any camera will ever be.

In just under a year of using ipad v1 every day for home and business use, while traveling abroad, in various office locations, I just once wished it had a camera in it. And even then it was because I couldn't be bothered going upstairs to get my iphone or digital camera or the wife's SLR.

Most ipad owners I know are the same. Either they can't imagine using a tablet form factor device to take a picture in the first place due to looking like an idiot, or the chances are they'd have something else better suited to the job with them at the time.

Looks like the new cameras are good for Facetime, so I'm assuming that's the main reason they are what they are. A lot of people complained they were missing from the v1 so they've added them for v2.

I'm still skeptical as to how much use they'll get and from Apple's point of view I can see why they saw them as an area to keep the cost down to be honest.

Yes indeed, both cameras suck ass. However, I have no need for them and will probably never use the external cam, so I don't particularly care. Much like the iPod nano generation where Apple added a superfluous crappy camera.

It's about as crappy as it gets for a camera. Reminds me of the quality of the first phones that had cameras. I'm surprised they even put such a low quality camra in the thing.
