The interesting thing in your message is the mention of "check over the sensors".

So, I would bet that the accelerometers are also being used to record the maximum number of G's the iPad has seen? Sort of a black box...

Actually yes, it does record the amount of G's and how hard the unit was hit and at the location of impact. It can calculate the all the info and the apple techs can look at that to determine your warranty. I knew they did this ever since the MacBook aluminum came with accelerometers. That's why u can also download the lightsabor app on ur MacBook.

But thx for ur input. I figured I would get these types of opinions when I posted this thread, and thats fine. :)
so sweet of you...to take it with smile....
feel sad about your ipad...call apple rep, hope they will send new !!

it does look like, somewhere along the way, it took a hit right at the plastic gasket (definitely a gouge there) and probably chipped the screen. could have happened anywhere. they the stars lined up just right when you were holding it and pop.

No, Im not protesteth? that sounds like old english?! but no.. I'm being truthful, I didn't drop it, or anything on it. I wish I could say it was an Angry Bird hitting the screen...

I just find it extremely strange that this happened in my hands, while I was using it. I mean, I could dismiss it as an accident or whatever if say.. I put it down.... walked away and came back.. cause I wouldnt of 'seen' it happen.. but this happened in my hands... so thats why im so.. baffled.

But thx for ur input. I figured I would get these types of opinions when I posted this thread, and thats fine. :)
Glad that Apple helped out. I was wondering, do you wear rings that could have levered against the glass??

I appreciate your input, I really do - but you're not the first nor the last person, to suggest that I've been lying with my experience. I do see this 'nick' our 'gouge' that people are pointing out, I'm not blind.

Aside from the fact that people are having a hard time 'believing' my story... the fact remains... This happened in my hands. There wasn't any nicks, dents, scuffs, or scratches to the screen or body prior to this. I've mentioned it before... I take great care of my devices.

I value the fact that people are taking the time to read my thread, and even suggest alternative ways that the damage could have been caused. Nothing wrong with that - but, what Im saying is, this happened in my hands. I've never dropped, bumped or bent the iPad2... It's a $700 CDN$ device... It deserve great care... as do all of my electronics.

Thx again... :)

I did not post to call you a liar, I posted to clarify to anyone interested in buying an iPad 2 not to be alarmed by this thread. You said yourself in your response to my original reply "Yes, I do see the spot you are referring too -- I dont recall if it was always there or not" and now your saying "There wasn't any nicks, dents, scuffs, or scratches to the screen or body prior to this". It's threads like this, that frighten off potential buyers of an outstanding, solid product (aside from light leaks). I do believe the crack spidered while in your hands, but there is no doubt it originated from a prior hit to that outside plastic bezel. Apple made the right call charging you the $299, it is what it is.

My story.

I just returned from Vegas this weekend. I had decided to take my iPad 2 with me against the recommendation of the wife. A day into the trip, I dropped my iPad 2 not more than 6-8" onto a tile floor. I hid this from the ball and chain so that I could avoid the dreaded hands on the hip "I TOLD YOU SO" berating. Actually, she aint that bad. LOL. What had happened was, the lower left corner of iPad dented just enough to put a small crack from the dented corner to the Home button. It wasn't a huge crack but large enough that had me bumming pretty badly.

I decided to make an appointment with the Genius bar the night of my return and see what, if anything, they would do for me. I was truthful and undemanding while I told them my sob story. The Genius bar attendant mentioned that they were out of units but would run in the back to see how much a repair would run me. When the genius bar personnel returned, he came back with a unopened iPad 2 box. He mentioned that this isn't something that they normally do, that the warranty doesn't cover such damage, and that they sometimes have a policy of allowing for a replacement. The one time, non warranty, replacement is purely discretionary. While I hid it, the inner teenage girl in me screamed with glee. Yeah, I was stoked.

Brought the unit home. Little to no back light bleed. Unit is in better shape that my original. I'm going to come clean with the wifey tonight.

TLDR. Long story, short. Be cool and honest and you may have a shot at finding the right attendant that might take pity on you and provide an on the house replacement.

I fly frequently, and witness some pretty bizarre handling of laptops and iPads at the larger major metro airports.

Just yesterday I saw a kid (maybe 8 yrs old) with his dad. He was running around with his dad's iPad in hand and sure enough he dropped it. It slid on it's back at least 20 to 25 feet or so, and smacked up against a pole.

Upon retrieving it, his dad was frantically inspecting it only to find that beyond the expected scratches from sliding and a small dent on the side, the glass was fine, and it still worked. Pretty amazing.

Note to self: Never let my kids or anyone irresponsible touch my Ipad 2. :D

Mine fell forward from this position on that counter top:

Here's another shot of the damage:

Mine works as well. Not a problem with usability. I've seen people drop these devices and it's amazing how well they hold up, but it does come down to luck. I would say I was not lucky.

BTW, I'm not trying to argue. I love these devices and I think they are well built and awesome. I'm just a bit shocked and depressed about my situation.

Thats crazy! Pretty amazing that that's glass and not polyurethane plastic. Although I don't know how apple thinks thats the right kind of strength. Id rather it be less prone to shatter from dropping (thicker glass maybe) than less prone to shatter from bending. When/how is an ipad ever going to be bent?

I remember watching the IP4 video when it was first introduced thinking "omg the same glass they use on helicopters, omg it bends and doesnt brake! This is going to be indestructible." not quite...

That's an incredible video. It seems the glass can bend, but it doesn't hold up well to the iPad tipping over.

I was using the smart cover as a stand in the vertical position with the smart cover folded up into a triangle. The iPad fell forward, and it happened on a granite counter top. The glass is now cracked:

Take it back to the Apple store and explain nicely what happened and I would bet that they will replace or repair it for you. Using the smart cover this way should not cause it to fall over. I would bet that they would replace it for you.

My living room window shattered one time too. I was sitting watching TV, and a Crazy Bird hit the window and the window shattered to the ground. Don't know whats wrong with the Angry and Crazy Birds these days cracking your iPad 2 and my window. :p

Anyways, hope everything works out with you in getting it replaced or repaired.

Impact mark can be seen, any qualified genius will notice this.

Scatter pattern is not one that would happen with temperature differences. Glass around the impact mark is pulverized by force.

In my opinion: stop lying, fess you you bumped it.

If they replace your screen, you're lucky.

Cracked iPad screen

My iPad 2 screen cracked while on an airplane yesterday. I powered it off for take off, then powered back on when the attendant said it was ok. My husband was sitting next to me and first noticed the cracks. It kept cracking for the next minute or so. It had been on my lap the entire time! The cracks seemed to start from around the button on the bottom. They spread out to almost the top. I took it into my apple store today, but was told it would be 299.00 to replace it for another IPad 2. They said that they had never heard of this happening before and I thought that they seemed to indicate that they thought I was lying. Needless to say, I feel like I should get more than a year out of a product that cost 700.00. You used to be able to buy American products and they were built to last. Not anymore. Does anyone know if the replacement that they sell you is refurbished or is it new? If you get a refurbished one, then Apple has quite a racket going.

Spontaneous screen cracking

My i pad 4 just 3months old and also has spontaneously shattered
Apple store staff just didn't believe me when I showed them the screen.
I have joined this forum as I saw that this had happened to someone else a couple of years ago
I pad warranty nor applecare covered the screen for 'accidental' damage. Define accidental ,Apple- Inexplicable should figure in the warranty somewhere- I have now purchased a replacement and :(spent£1000 in 3months- I am not happy- at no time was my ipad knocked/dropped /stood on/sat on/attacked with force etc etc- who in their right mind would not have smart cover and protective bag for this expensive item? Not me thats for sure.

Obviously you chose not to purchase Apple Care Plus. Or are you upset over the $49 deductible?

If you purchased it with certain credit cards like American Express, they may cover it for accidental damage for 90 days.

Count me in this group as well. Happened to my iPad 3 about a month after I got it. Holding it in portrait, took one hand off of close the Smart Cover and the glass shattered under my thumb.

The smart cover isn't designed to be used in a portrait position. There was this company that makes the case/cover which folds up into an origami shape which allows you to lean it in portrait or landscape position.

Why would someone come onto a forum and tell random strangers lies?

That's a real howler to be asked in an Apple forum. There are so many reasons, ranging from pure cranks to antifanboys to stock manipulators to common trolls.
