Hes telling the truth.Search the gizmodo site or maybe youtube for the video on the ipad 2 glass stress test. They almost had to bend it in half with bottom and top touching to make it break.

Well I suppose it's a good thing you cynics won't be reviewing his claim. Sometimes parts go bad. I've seen ram modules with exploded chips that started a small smoldering fire and the first "genius" said it was water damage. We called it in and explained this happened while his daughter had it on her lap. They sent a box and repaired it immediately. There is no way to definitively call this user damage from a picture on the Internet. Sometimes things just break.

Besides he's a Canadian. They're all polite and can't lie... Can they?

Cheers,

I appreciate your input! As much as I would love to say... All Canadians tell the truth... that'd be a lie!

I dunno, call me crazy, but I just don't get a "lying" vibe from the OP.
- Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts. When I wrote this thread, I figured as much that I would have many doubts from others - which is totally fine. I'm not here trying to convince anyone of anything - aside from my story and what I experienced. It sucked a$$... thats all I know.

You were holding it wrong. ~Steve
LOL!

Not being a cynic....The proof is right before your eyes. There is physical damage on the edge just next to where the glass was broken. This damage is in the form of a gouge. Then at the point where the glass broke the glass is
actually crushed. Now put these two facts together and that will tell you the proximate cause of this damage. Glass does not just spontaneously crush.....I could possibly believe his story if there were just cracks in the glass with no gouge on the edge and crushed glass. There is really no disputing the physical evidence....It is what it is, really not much to dispute in this matter.

I can totally understand your logic... Im not denying that in the least. I can see how it would look as if something were dropped on it - but, I promise you... this is not the case. It was in my hand... and it happened. Very shocking.
Sorry but your whole story falls apart right there. No one outside of a mental facility plays angry birds in portrait. ;)

Actually, I re-read my msg... and I spotted out this error. I meant Landscape, not Portrait... I actually figured out the difference when I was printing a document... But ya.. easy mistake.. :) thx for pointing it out tho

Hes's not. I remember seeing him around last year. I believe him.

That has clearly been dropped. Buy a protector next time or simply hold with both hands. In the future, if you see anything hard, rough and grey under your feet, hold onto the ipad. Do not let go.
- I value your opinion, but like I said, it wasn't dropped. I have no reason to lie or misconstrued the details... Im not that type of person. ASIDE from that - I actually have a ZAGG sheild in transit and should be here this week... a lil late dontcha think! lol

Spot on diagnosis. Crushed glass in a specific spot indicates impact damage, before you even consider the nick on the edge. A sudden glass failure would not be as concentrated in one spot. I've been working with mobile phones for 17 years and have seen this damage often on hard impacted LCD's. Hell I've even done it myself with old phones for fun!

- As I mentioned in a previous quote, Im not denying how the logic looks, but what I dont think people are getting is... This happened in my hands while holding the iPad... I didn't drop it. I've owned many Apple Products over the years. iMac's, MBP's, iPad 1.. iphone 4..etc.. the list goes on. I'm very aware of how to treat my products. Weither you believe my post or not... I was very honest with my thread (except the error in saying it was portrait mode, when really it was landscape.. simple mistake). But ya.. Thx for your input tho, I appreciate it. Again, I do understand how that 'gouge' does look like the focal point of a blunt hit - but... Im perplexed myself. I wouldnt even have this thread if this didnt happen in my hands. Strange... I know.

It bugs me that so many people think the OP is lying! He's Canadian, they can't lie :D and honestly I believe that pressure could break the screen, because my screen keeps clicking in on one side and popping out on the other. Mine also came with a dent in it. It only occurred to me recently to replace the thing. (I have an appointment next week)

Those pictures make me cringe.... Poor iPad :(
Thx for the vote of Confidence! If only that were the case that No Canadian's lied... (not sure if u've been following the politics which is the hot topic of the country).. Many lies there lol

--- I wanted to take the time and reply to some of the replies to this thread... I value the fact that people are taking the time to reply and give their thoughts. Weither someone believes me or not, or calls me out as a liar, that is fine... Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I appreciate their honesty.

I'll know more information tmrw on what Apple plans to do. I know at this point, I've sent pictures to their technician, and that they will more than likely want the iPad itself so that they can check the sensors on the inside to rule out... a drop... a hit.. water damage.. heat damage .. etc.

I've posted images in another thread about lightbleeding - but it looks like where the LightBleeding was... is where the focal point of the 'crack' is...that is another thing the Apple Senior Advisor was a bit concerned about... the fact that line up in such a manner that adds more questions to the puzzle.

I've done a lot of research on this topic, and I've seen countless Videos.. It's bizarre because... Some videos really show the durability of the glass, and others show how fragile it is...

Honestly - Your reply gave me some hope that there is still some sane folks kicking around the forums boards. I dont blame others for their quick jumps to conclusions and flamed labels of lying... It comes with the internet world. Thx for reading my previous stuff! :)

Man you are FAR too calm to be in a computer/gadget forum. You took multiple flamethrowers to the face and simply emerged smiling. Kudos to you - sets a great example for everybody (myself included) ;)

Dude your first picture clearly shows a gouge in the non-glass material that coincides with the same exact spot where the glass shows an impact, the center of where the glass starts to spiral out. More power to ya if Apple replaces it for free but honestly if I were making the decision at Apple I'd offer to repair the thing for ya at a discounted rate as a gesture of good will. I wouldn't give ya a free unit in exchange. I just don't believe you.

Thanks for your reply. Your entitled to your opinion which is fine. If apple doesn't replace my iPad it's not the end of the world but it would suck based on my experience. I'd be very grateful for any assistance in repairs or what not. Again, thanks for your input.

You guys claiming that, "it has clearly been dropped," probably have issues. Why would someone come onto a forum and tell random strangers lies?

This was my concern with the iPad 2, the build quality feel less sturdy than the original.

It's called denial.

I'm going through a similar situation. I've been using my iPad 2 for the past 2 weeks. I treat it like gold, have a smart cover, Geco grip strips on the back to prevent it from slipping out of my hands and put it in a padded sleeve when in transport.
I usually charge it every night and I'm assuming that when I placed it down on my desk for overnight charging, I may have placed it down a little too hard and the next morning noticed a shattered corner (bottom corner, to the right of the home button). I didn't drop it in any way, and the only thing I can think happened is that when I placed it down on the desk, it hit that "sweet spot" that I've been reading on other forums. It literally had a shatter that emanated right from the corner. Zero damage to the aluminum body.
Fortunately, I live just north of Toronto and brought it in to my closest Apple store. My Genius appointment ran smooth and explained to the Apple rep exactly the steps that I think brought me to this point. He looked up my serial number and could see it was practically brand new, I showed him all my protection steps. He didn't even have to speak to a manager, just punched in some numbers and said they will replace the entire iPad...I will have to wait for about a week for the new shipment to come in, but the replacement has gone through. No questions, no arguing.

Ooh look, another person who dropped their iPad claiming it mysteriously broke. Take responsibility for your actions, people.

I have a similar photo, different edge. I'm not allowed to discuss how it happened - not for reasons of dishonesty, but because some people here will take offense if I described how it happened (because apparently, I have no right to complain). Needless to say, when Apple was told truthfully how the breakage occurred, they offered to replace it without my asking.

Now I am not claiming this is the same type of damage OP has, but this is what an iPad that hit the floor looks like:

Probably replaced just for being honest, because everyone else claims they self-destruct! :p:p

I'll have to admit, I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt but that's the closest I've seen to an impact versus a stress fracture ever.

Wow... So because you cant place an item on a desk properly you take an iPad that someone else could have after already waiting so long.

Disgraceful

Wow... So because my iPad couldn't take the "abuse" of placing it on a desk, I have to accept spending $500 on a product that can't?

Tool.

I have 2 first generation iPad that my 3 year old and 5 year old use, and they beat the **** out of it. My iPad 2 can't take the stress of placing it down on a desk....put yourself in my situation and see how confused and mad you'd be. So the next person in line that should have gotten the iPad that is being ordered for me doesn't get it and has to wait an additional week, big deal. It's not a freaking kidney! Get some priorities in life dude!

OP, the problem here is that we can all see that there is a ding in the metal right outside the crack, and there is a pretty obvious point of impact going by the pattern of the shattering.

I believe that you did not notice when this thing was dropped or banged, but it's pretty obvious that it took a hit. There's no way that mark is a coincidence. I fear the manager you're working with may tell you the same, but he might be cool about it anyway and replace it.

It sucks no matter what--hopefully they'll help you out.

Looking at the pictures rworne posted I can see where people are coming from saying it looks like the OP dropped something on it.

It seems to me like when there is an impact at the point of impact on the glass it usually shows like in rworne where it is more white (wasn't sure on another word to expain it than it looks white LOL) at the bottom than anywhere else on the photo which is the same as the OP's pic.

I'm not sure though I have no idea of the different types of breaks in glass and what they look like. Just looking at the pictures I see that part where the glass looks more white on both rworne pics and the OP's.

Had a thought on this. The OP should see this as a positive. It will mask the backlight bleed in that area.

Just three more drops on something nice and hard and you will have the only perfect screen out there :)

I just wonder is the Ipad 2 not as well made as Ipad 1?

Never dropped Ipad 1 but hit the back by accident a few times and never even dented it. I seen a few for sale on ebay with bad dents in them.

I've dropped my Iphone 4 loads usually on laminate wood floor and it has been fine. Also seen a few Iphone 4's look like this so I guess any drop would need to be a hard surface.

Methinks thou protesteth too much. Obviously you dropped something on it and are just practicing what you're going to say to the Apple genius when you bring it in. Maybe you could say it was an angry bird hitting the screen. good luck. Maybe the genius got laid last night and will give you a break.

I agree with you. You can see the impact mark in the metal edge. Sorry, dude... not buying the story. Good luck though. You may have a better chance if you are honest with them.

Holy crap! Thats a lotta damage!!

Man, you oughta wear some of those gloves wide receivers wear if you drop things so often.

Thanks for your reply.

No no, I can see that small ding... but what Im saying is - it wasn't there before... nor has it been banged, or dropped. I have a foam-like sleeve for it... so it's always in protection. But I understand what your saying.. it does look like it was Tapped with something... but.. I mean, it happend while I was holding it.. so it's strange for me. Honestly, this is one of this situations that if it happened and was video recorded, it would set a lot of people str8.

I appreciate your input. I'm really hoping that something can be done for it. I havent been able to use it for 2 days... and Im going mad.

RealRacing HD is screaming at me... I can hear it..

Wow, looks like you threw one of the birds at the screen, hence the name angry birds, I wonder, they were furious with your iPad.

Honestly, just go to an Apple retail store and they should replace it. They may not though, since it may be a user fault and not a hardware defect, just contact them to make sure.

Thanks for ur input - It's ok that ur not 'buying' my story, cause Im not selling it. LOL. I appreciate your input, but I do get a bit of a kick out of all of the negative opinions in turn calling me a liar. That's fine, but it is an opinion and doesnt change the fact that I experienced this... And, I was 100% honest with Apple when I reported this issue.
