I think the fact that they say that when you travel you can buy a micro-SIM from a local carrier to enable 3G is a fairly clear indication that it will be unlocked.

The original iPad and the iPhone 4 on apple.ca have wording like that, but they don't mention anything like that for iPad 2 in US/Canada do they?

If the carriers are not subsidizing the price, then it will not be locked.

That's what we'd expect, but for the past several years, if you paid a non-subsidized price for an iPhone in the US, was it unlocked? Nope..

I just posted the unlock question on Rogers Redboard (Canadian Carrier) for clarification. Two days ago, a Rogers person responded to my initial question and told me that I could use my SIM card from my iPad 1 in the iPad 2.

Will update if/when they reply.

I'm curious about this myself. I have a grandfathered iPad 1 with unlimited data. I'm really interested in seeing what is going to happen with AT&T if I swap out the SIMs, and if AT&T is going to try any way to weasel out of that agreement - like downgrading the plan to the 2GB one saying the unlimited was only for the iPad 1. Or perhaps the SIM won't work at all...

If the iPad 2 is carrier locked in Canada, I wouldn't be surprised if Rogers/Bell/Telus had something to do with the decision, because our carriers are greedy.

What other country has 3 year contracts for phones?

This doesn't make a lot of sense to me. We can buy unlocked iPhones in Canada direct from Apple. Why would they lock the iPad?

I'm guessing this is just a mistake on the page, where they had someone take the US text and make it Canadian specific, and they screwed it up along the way.

Since last year in Canada Apple has sold the iPad and iPhone direct to consumers at a non-subsidized price and carrier unlocked. Why would Apple care what the big 3 in Canada think? I can't understand why they would make it locked?

I guess we'll have to wait and see. We don't even have canadian pricing yet so maybe the site just isn't completely accurate.

May be a case of poor communication but it seems carriers have a lot of clout with device makers ?

I'd think Apple would be immune to that but even Google stopped selling unlocked phones.

I see where it says that on the UK site but not the Canadian or U.S. site. In fact I don't see any mention of micro-SIM on either of the latter two sites except in the tech specs page. Can you clarify?

I really want to know this....

WTF does anyone buy a 3G iPad. Tether, pay ONE data plan and be done.

I seriously don't get the fascination with 3G iPad, and tying yourself to another data ripoff scheme from US carriers.

Someone enlighten me on what I am missing.

Tethering drains the iPhone's battery life way too much. And if your iPhone loses all of its battery then you won't be able to use the internet on neither of your devices. If you have a 3G iPad how likely is it that both of your devices will be out of battery at the same time?

Plus if you travel it's really easy to just get a local micro-SIM for the iPad. Also in a lot of countries the iPhone only has very limited data plans. Here, for example, the most data I can get with my plan is 600MB. But if I want I can get unlimited data for the iPad if I have the 3G one.

First of all, not finding something useful for your needs doesn't mean it's a useless item. Having 3G in the device is a convenience. I travel abroad a few times a year and the ability to pop a microSIM into the iPad locally is invaluable. So for me, and others like me, a 3G iPad turns a great device into a really great one. Isn't it wonderful that you can buy one without 3G so you really have nothing to complain about?

Solution:

Buy a 29.00 cheap battery extender for iPhone.

Done.

That's one solution. What about all of the other issues?

What if you travel a lot and your iPhone is locked? With the iPad 1 you could always buy a local micro-SIM for your iPad.

Another good advantage of a 3G iPad is that you can get it from a different carrier than your phone. So if you're in an area where one of the carriers has crappy coverage you might still get good coverage with your other device and be able to browse he web.

I did not say it was useless. I asked why people chose to buy it; as there is a much cheaper solution in buying the wifi version. This applys both to the upfront cost as well as ongoing data charges.

One can imagine that if you have your iPad with you, your phone is not far away.

Believe it or not there are people that don't want to tether. Plus, I find the convenience of 3G contained within the device to be an additional benefit. And I also don't find tethering to be "much cheaper" when you consider the convenience. I happily pay $30 a month for unlimited data on my iPad (or $10 more than tethering would cost).

Wifi is not always easily available in many locations in cities around the world. I got the 3G version to avoid roaming data charges in travels to south and central america.

I don't have an iPhone4 so I can't "Tether". I only have pay as you go phone.
I may go with a 3G iPad although I won't use the 3G capabilities very much. There is no monthly charge, you only pay for the month you will use it and then cancel and sign up again when you need it.

Are you enlightened?

Can you actually buy unlimited data for iPad @ 30/month? Can you actually pay only 10/month more to tether w/o downgrading a unlimited iPhone data plan down to 2gig?

The convenience of which you speak may be true, but the cost measure may be flawed.

iPhone 4 unlimited data 30/month.
JB. Free
MYWI. 19.99 one time.
Tethering setup, 15 seconds.
Unlimited data to iPad (non jailbroken) already paid for on iPhone 4.

The way I see it, if you do a little bit of work you save a ton. I am not saying that many people are not willing to pay the carriers the double dipping charges for convenience of having the 3G device, but make no mistake it is way more expensive.

If you can afford it and don't care, superb- no biggie.

I just think that in Canada, they will have models with sims installed for all three different carriers, not locked.

They will a model that will have a bell sim, a rogers sim, and so on.
