I can definitely see the effect which the OP is describing in these two images.

And it is more or less an optical illusion, but it's an optical illusion that you would only perceive in a 2d image.

Because the image is in 2d, there is no actual depth perception, so our brains try and estimate depth and relative size.

What's making it look "thicker" in the images is the highlights and shadows created by a taper under lights. You would quite easily be able to perceive actual depth and determine it was thinner in person, but in a picture, with the right lighting and angle, the iPad 2 can be PERCEIVED as being thicker...

9 pages and counting? Seriously? You can't have many other things to talk about then, arguing over whether or not the new iPad is thinner or thicker than the old, despite the official technical specs showing quite clearly that it is indeed a third thinner than before...

The only reason it looks thicker from the back is that in that one picture people keep posting the iPad2 is sitting ON the apple cover. It's not just sitting on the table like the iPad1 is.

The iPad 2 is physically thinner. How much thinner it looks depends on the angle you are viewing it from.

Babaoom. That's iPad2 + Apple Cover vs iPad1 on it's own.
You can see the magnets on the right side of the iPad2.

The iPad 2 is actually still noticeably thinner even with the cover. As Amnesia87 pointed out, it's due to the fact that you're looking at a 2D image, and the highlights and shadows, that are creating the illusion.

I think this thread has run its course.

I think these pictures should put this whole mess to rest.

The iPad 1's edge looks as thick as the WHOLE iPad 2's thickness, it's clearly thinner and does not look less thin and actually looks slightly thinner because the edge does taper back a bit.

So what? After all the calls of "ignore the title, read the OP", I went back and re-read it.

Are you all telling me that you are not going to buy the iPad 2 because it "looks" thicker? I guarantee you will feel the difference, and it will be a huge difference.

But it will only feel like a huge difference from certain angles.

While I'm sure the iPad 2 is 33% thinner, this seems pretty close. I don't think the thinness is as dramatic as most blogs are making it out to be.

But you're forgetting the part where the iPad 2 has a FLAT back. That destroys the illusion once your eye hits that part.

And to some others, I'm not saying that the iPad 2 isn't physically thinner, I'm saying it doesn't LOOK thinner.

I dont know my sister has the first gen and I the second. Just looking at hers it looks kinda thick. And looking at mine it looks very thin.

Also when placing it next to the iPhone 4 it makes it LOOK even thinner.

Maybe it doesn't "look" any thinner to you and that's fine you are allowed to see what you will- I will say you should really see both side by side in someone else's hand and see if you change your thought process.
