Can't these original iPads and iPad 2's still work well enough as a payment kiosk? Seems like I remember a lot of them getting used that way by small shops who'd put them in custom made cases on their countertops. Or did apps like Square stop running on the older iOS versions they use?

I had the first iPad. It was good. I had the second iPad. It was great. Everything was so much more responsive. I really liked that iPad. I kept it the longest of all my iPads.

I thought the iPad air was obsolete by now. I thought this thing was obsolete years ago... I dont even know why anyone bought iPads before retina. I bought the 3rd gen one with retina first...which was quickly discontinued

I have to admit, I would have guessed it was labeled obsolete 3 years ago. Even by Apple standards, that's quite a long run. But it couldn't go past iOS 9 anyway.

A lot of people in this thread are mistaking the iPad 2 as "lasting" ten years but in reality it was marked obsolete in every country except US 2 years ago and probably long before that in reality. But I guess if you didn't read that part then you're unlikely to have read this comment 3 pages later lol.

Apple products useful life last about 4-5 years - still way better than industry average, but def nowhere near 10.

That said, I just rewatched the keynote for this for some reason today and Steve convinced me to trade my current iPad in for an iPad 2. You just can't ignore the 33% thinner, 2x CPU, 9x graphics stats...I'm sold.

Payment processing has strict regulations with regards to security such as PCI DSS, PA-DSS, etc. The fact that they run very old unpatched iOS won't fly then there are other road blocks like iOS app compatibility and limited resources like 256MB and 512MB RAM.

They do not seem to take that very seriously because I have been at an ATM this week that crashed and rebooted and it rebooted into Windows XP. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not think that system is really top on the security list.

My iPad 2 is still going strong!! I remember lining up for hours at the Santa Monica Apple store to buy it on the day of release, just after the Fukushima earthquake happened.

It's still fast and snappy with iOS 6, and the battery is still good after all these years. I keep it around mostly for the great library of games that's installed on it, many of which aren't even on the App Store any more.

Admittedly it struggles to load modern websites. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to get a modern browser onto old iOS devices. (Contrast to old Macs from this era where you can still install a reasonably modern Firefox even if you're running an ancient macOS!)

Apple still sold the iPad 2 until 2014 with the introduction of the iPad Air 2, probably longer in refurbished section. So for some people, it’s not that old. This marks the importance for right to repair. If Apple no longer willing to repair it, at least let the components be available for others to help actual people who might still have the device.

My first iPad. Loved it to bits, was surprisingly capable. My dad used it to run his business until the screen bit the dust last year.

Still use mine for some e-reader duties and for an old WW2 strategy game I cannot play on my 2014 MBP after 32bit support ended.

To quote the old Timex ad: “takes a licking, keeps on ticking”

Still have an iPad 3rd gen, been through my use, and a few kids. Glad I didn’t pay $100 more for an extra 16GB of storage now. 🤣

mind boggling that it was supported in any way, thats the second iPad released ever. I was thinking maybe it was the Air 2 that was obsolete.

This is why Apple products get premium markup I guess.

This is nonsense. My iPad 2 has been useless for years. It can't handle almost any webpage, it can't even run a photo slideshow using the default apps without crashing shortly after starting (else I would at least use it as a fun digital photo frame). Why is only now official obsolete?
Schools, medical, and point of sale use is likely. It’s probably in the article neither you or I bothered to read before commenting😝

Was my first iPad. Replaced it with an iPad Pro and gave it to my sister. That thing is still going.

People ask why I prefer apple over android devices. Lol

how is the battery?

Battery on my iPad 2 is still good. Purchased on the first day they were released and has had plenty of use over the years (more sporadic use now days, but going weeks/months without being charged doesn't seem to have hurt it)

Also an occasional iPad 2 user. Kids sometimes watch Plex and YouTube. Safari is slow and crashes a lot, especially with heavier websites, but Reeder and Instapaper both work fine. Yeah, it is super slow, but battery is still surprisingly great!

cool, does that mean they will take away all those clunky iPads at the Delta gates in certain airports? You know the one where you have to order your food and beverage through the tablet? And if you need help figuring it out, the server can tap it for you...

I found the iPad 2 really comfortable to hold. I remember reading that this design is really what they wanted the original iPad to be, but there was too much of a rush to get something out the door.

how is the battery?
Pretty good. As e-reader it's still very good, when using for the game I referenced (Panzer Corps) it drains much more quickly (obviously), but surprisingly good performance given its age imho. I don't use it a ton and had not used it all for about 2 years until 6 months ago when I found it during lockdown. I'd say it and the 2014 MBP I'm typing this on have been the best Apple products longevity-wise that I've owned.
