To be compelling to business and to readers, the new iPad needs to get to a more usable 11" screen -- then all those documents and PDFs may actually be readable.

I can't even read a regular magazine on the 9.7" screen without scrolling all over.

As it is, the Androids are coming up with 10" screens and often better hardware. It's gonna be an uphill battle.

I can get 50 but it's $100 a month! Netflix works in HD over my little pissy 3mbps. when my AT&T contract is up I'll go to 20mbps with Comcast for like $55

yikes. I'd never go for that. 50 is a bit much for a house unless you're running an orphanage full of kids with tons of gadgets. The 20 with comcast would probably be perfect. You had to sign a contract to get the DSL from AT&T?

haven't you all learned your lesson about labeling something as "unapple"?...saw this happen prior to the iPhone 3G and iP4...and I saw the same people eat crow...lets please kill the term "unapple"

no...actually you speak from your own personal bias...if you haven't noticed iPad is the best selling and most popular tablet/reader on the market...one tech analyst even suggested that Apple could simply stamp "2" on the first gen iPad box and it would still outsell the competition...you're right it is an uphill battle, for the competition

The backing in that mockup looks like the back from my 1st gen iPhone. It would be a major step backwards in design philosophy, IMO. It looks good, but not as good as what they have now.

Really Apple?

Thinner and lighter mockups?

Seriously???

If the real mockups don't come with 1 Gig of RAM, a 240 Gig SSD, a retina display and a zoomable 8 MP camera then I'm waiting for the next round of mockups.

I wonder when the Buyers Guide says that will be?

The iPad won't get 1 gig of ram, drop that hope from above.

But Ideally if it did I'd Want it coupled with an A9 dual core CPU and then web browsing will be lightspeed.

Why on earth would you put "iPad 2" on this thing? Obviously  has never put a version number on this kind of product. My best guess is that it might look more like iPhone 4 if it's going to be flat on the back. I think with the first iPad they tried to make it look like the clamshell half of a macbook pro, hopefully on the next one they take a little more liberty with the design and put it out on it's own.

Yea, to my knowledge, the iPhone is the only product to ever get the number treatment. Even then, "3G" is not a device generation number, it's the radio technology.

Every other device simply takes on the original's name. 1st gen, 2nd gen, etc. are only used to indicate OS compatibility and the like.

One thing I always found cheap about the iPad are the plastic volume and power buttons. Those need to go.

Yes. I was at the Apple Company store the other day and played with an iPad. The buttons felt/looked quite cheap - like the 1st generation iPhone. The iPhone 4 buttons are beautiful, however (as beautiful as a button can be )

I look forward to any design touches they may have incorporated from the iPhone 4 - it's probably the most detailed, finely made Apple product ever.

Well then, wait for the official announcement, and if that is not enough to satisfy your hunger for speed and even more speed, then wait some more.
Or have a look at Sony and Dell et al. They make decent machines.
How dare you suggest such a thing! and on a mac forum too!

Doesn't seem realistic to me.

1) Huge speaker holes. I'd expect tiny ones like we see on the macbook pros, or a fine mesh grate like on the bottom of the iPhone 4.

2) it says "iPad 2" on the back. When has Apple ever done that?

Are apple ever going to make the switch over to Super AMOLED displays? Because frankly, LCD is becoming a thing of the past. With IPS consumes much more power than Oled and inferior viewing angles - which is indispensable for an iPad.

I believe jobs isnt very fond of OLED displays, and you know what that means (blu ray players in Macs )

That is probably going to go down in history as one of the most inaccurate mock-ups ever.

Seriously, how could anyone think that Apple could possibly release something so ugly? Surely no one would think that..

Mock-up

Who did the mock-up? Not Apple ... they would never name this the iPad 2 and the speaker grill is ridiculous.

AMOLED is so expensive even Samsung doesn't use it on its own Galaxy Tab.

that first picture is not even a freaking mockup. its a picture of an ipad next to the top corner of the screen of a macbook pro. really guys?

Yet another bad mockup

Please leave the product design to Apple. I do not think for a second this is the "iPad 2". Not a chance. Not even close. Cheap look, ugly speaker grill, molded instead of machined body. Nothing on this design has any traces of an apple designed product in the year 2011. I wouldn't rule out this to be a bootleg product like those fake iphone clones you find showing up in Hong Kong. It says "iPad 2" on the back. For real? Do you really think Apple will put "iPad 2" on the back on the next iPad? Seriously people.

That mockup has got to be way off. No one at Apple would even consider releasing something that hideous.

My hopeful attempt to interpret the article:

"design changes"=last minute decision to put the high resolution display into the iPad 2 instead, in order to not upset customers by releasing a new iPad 3 with higher resolution just a couple of months after the iPad 2.

"production bottlenecks"=obvious difficulty of accelerating the production of said displays.

I say hopeful because I would like really like to get an iPad but can't deal with the resolution of the current model (however the IPS quality was nice...).

I don't know about everyone else, but I much prefer the curved back and the reassuring weight of the current one. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised though.

I tend to agree with this point of view, I paid top dollar for the 64G 3G as well as the smaller 16G WiFi and the weight certainly makes it feel more like your holding your moneys worth. The feel is just solid, much like the iPhone4.

Not to say that there is no other reason to live my iPad, I can definitely name a zillion things I use it for in both work and play. :apple:

On a side note:
Has any one even fathomed a fact that I see all too many times with current or other grill designs with Apple and other brands? That is when any design has a vent or speaker grill that wraps around or is placed on an underside of any device and water or liquid is spilled on a table even remotely close.. the ports act as a wick and the damage is worse than if it was spilled on top of a keyboard or screen face.

Not only the grill, form is also ugly. If Apple's future and quality depends on Steve Jobs, God save Steve Jobs! This mockup is worst and cheap looking design I've ever seen from Apple.
