Purchased a 32GB Wifi only two days ago and it definitely has the screen bleeding issues almost around the entire bezel. Two corners are noticeably worse than the rest though.

I'm not terribly thrilled about it obviously, however:

1.) It's only noticeable with a completely black background and then more so in a dimly lit area with said background. Still no excuse, but it is what it is.

2.) Apple's return policy is amazing.

3.) I have every intention of returning it for a fresh, hopefully defective free unit, but it's not going to happen any time soon given the supply shortage. I might just wait 6 months for a fresh unit (and thereby a fresh battery).

I doubt this problem will fix itself, but here's to hoping it will :p

not sure if mine has the bleeding issue.
I tried to use the camera and put my hand on it to cover to get a black background on screen with 50% or 100% brightness i cant seems to see the light bleeding in anywhere?

is there a better way to test it?

Yes, press on the bezel all the way around the screen, applying more an more pressure until you see it. Of course I'm kidding.

Look, if you have to ask that question and can't see anything, then why go looking for problems? Get as far away from this forum as you can, and enjoy your device. Good luck.

Just as a complete random example, I see this image just posted in the other thread which epitomises the issue:

That is typical and unacceptable for current LCD tech.

In your opinion what are the chances of this being resolved. One of my options was a discounted iPad 1 but it seems Apple has pulled these from the stores. Weird.

Whoever says that this is uncommon for current LCD tech is kidding themselves. This is an inherent issue for ALL edge lit LCD displays, whether you are dealing with iPads, televisions, or other LCD using devices. The iPad 1 also had the issue, so there is no escaping. If you want an iPad, then just deal with the tradeoff and enjoy it.

With all due respect I disagree with basically all of your rants..I mean posts. The question was to the poster with actual experience with multiple (more than 5) iPad 2s.

Wrong.

After you have it awhile you adjust. They can only do so much at that price point. Just accept it.

Again with the OCD. I don't think someone needs to be suffering from OCD to give crap if the $500 plus screen they're holding in their hand has an annoying flaw.

But again, it's only an annoying flaw if you actually notice it while using it.

Who cares if it's only noticeable on a black screen in a dark room with the brightness up?

Now if you get one that's worse and you notice it while watching videos etc. that's a major flow and not OCD and should 100% be replaced.

Point being people should just get the device, use it normally and not worry about it if they don't notice any problems. If they notice problems, then they should definitely exchange until they get one that is perfect in their normal usage. But no point in going out of your way to try to notice it. Just use the damn thing and see if you notice it or not.

Try really hard to see it, couldn't see it. Bought on 25th.

I know that it is a common problem for all kinds of displays, some are worst than others.

As I keep saying, I am not a man with 1 faulty ipad :) I see a lot of these and they are unacceptable with today's tech in LCD.

ALL of the ones I have seen did *not* have their light levels elevated; I set them (as the test) to auto brightness.

Every one (and it is a lot) see the same issue in differing areas - on auto brightness.

Sounds like it is an issue with auto brightness then. A software issue.

Many of us have said, many times, we own a lot of lcd tech of which none suffers in this way.

I have a £3k tv, its fine. I have an ipad1, its fine. I have a macbook pro, fine, a 6 yo Dell latitude, fine, a htc android, fine, etc etc. An Ipad2, not fine :)

And how many of those are LED lit screens. How bright are the screens when you turn them up to a 100% to try to see light bleed ? Do you see light bleed on your iPad during normal use, or do you have to 'test' it to see light bleed? Do you 'test' these other devices too, or just the iPad (like others do, test iPad only)?

not sure if mine has the bleeding issue.

You don't have light bleeding issues with your device. Do not worry about it. Just use and enjoy. Seriously.

Its abundantly clear, that despite 'people in the industry' that see hundreds of these devices (ie me) stating there is something not right with those screens, many people will argue this. I have seen many. I have had many ipad1s through my hands, the screen issue was simply not there in this level.

To repeat. You can see backlight bleed from first power on when it begs for itunes. You can see it when you have it set on autobrightness. You can see it in a lot of games/dark applications. You can see it when you watch films.

This, as I keep saying, is not simply a man, with 1xipad2, sat in a dark room, under a blanket with a light meter. I have seen 'quite' a few more, in normal, ambient usage conditions........ :)

The time will come, when backlight bleed is the first question asked in the future

Exactly. It really annoys me when people make out you have to go "looking" for this problem. The whole device is one big screen that you will be "looking" at for hours on end! You are kidding yourselves if you think its acceptable!

It like buying a new car that has a scratch on the bonnet or clouds of black smoke coming out the exhaust and saying "well its only noticeable under the right conditions or when i go looking for it" doesn't change the fact there is something wrong!! My bleed was visible at 50% in normal lighting conditions, it looked rubbish and is the worst LCD i have seen on any computer. No amount of denial or avoiding dark images, movies, games, wallpapers will change that. My ipad 2 never even made it out the wrapper, as soon as i booted it and it begged for iTunes i could see the bleed. So back for a refund it went until Apple start selling iPads with a decent screen.

Neither of the two iPad 2s I bought on Saturday made it out of their cellophane either, the bleed was so pronounced. A slightly dim room and the 'connect to iTunes' screen was all I needed to see it.

Now waiting for my online order in the hope that they've managed to tweak production somehow.

I'm rather pessimistic, however. I think this could be a flaw in the design where they're simply trying to pack too much into too narrow a space. The screen is getting pinched at the edges and there's nowhere for the pressure to go.

I just think they must have known about the issue, anyone with eyes spendig a few seconds with the device can see it. They decided to ship anyway due to hitting the deadlines. I have no idea how the prototype made it into full scale production. As soon as you turn it on you can see it. I do hope they fix it and i think they will tweak production in the next batch. I think some slight uniform bleed evenly around all the edges is ok and to be expected, but what we are seeing with this device is awful.

I could really care less whether you agree or not. Show me some evidence that disputes what I'm saying, because I can show you a TON of references. Until then, your commentary means nada.

I'd rather have a iPad that's a bit thicker and no light bleed.

Agreed. I'd probably pay more for it too. I'm hoping that whatever panel they go to for a retina display in iPad 3, if that comes to fruition, accomplishes this. Apple's obsession with thin products takes a toll on the overall quality from a display, speaker, and camera perspective.

I'd like to hear people's opinions and maybe even someone is in the same situation as myself. Thanks in advance for your opinions.

keep your order and move forward.

if there was no bleed issue, something else COULD be wrong. that happens, return it...like any other item that is defective that you have bought in your life.

Made up my mind and that's exactly what I'll do. Keep the order and see how it goes. Thanks to everyone for their opinions.
