I believe the 5% ipad 2 sales is because the 4th generation ipad with retina was still on sale in the refurbished store for less than a 2nd generation new one. Sorry for the 5% which did not see that...

This is bad for the iPad 2. I think Apple may discontinue it this year.

It's not bad, its a really outdated model that needs to be discontinued. But it probably won't since thats the version Dish Network sells to use with their "Hopper" system.

The iPad 2 is cheaper. So as a buyer, you check "for $100 more, what do I get? ". With the iPad Air, it seems that finally there is the point that most customers think the iPad Air is the one to buy.

Exactly. I went shopping with some family members who chose the iPad 2 over the 4 despite my insistence. She claimed the screen seemed fine and the A6 would mean nothing for the Facebook app and a few light games.

All she saw was the $100 difference and the same shell.

Good, people need to stop buying the iPad 2 for personal use, no reason to get ripped off on an old product when new products are far better. Some might say well I can't afford the better iPads so thats why I got the 2nd gen. Well if you can't afford it then you don't need one. The only reason someone should get the iPad 2 is like other people have said, like for school mass purchases where they have a ton of 30 pin accessories or something along those lines.

Erm, and? What has the iPad 3 got to do with anything?

Welp 'sherlock'... there were two full sized ipads released after the ipad 2 and only now was there a huge hit to sales of the ipad 2. So your 'no ish sherlock' comment was a bit uncalled for.

I suppose you have rich parents. I don't, but my kids have. That's why I have to look after my money. When you grow up you will learn that it is not a matter of what you can afford, but what you want to pay.

And that's ignoring your insulting and cringeworthy attitude to people who actually don't have much spare money.

1. The iPad 2 sells to people who are torn between an iPad and something cheaper.

2. The iPad 2 with its lower price gets people in the shop, and then they see how much better an iPad Air is and buy one. Probably the same with the iPhone 5c. Just because a product doesn't have many sales itself, doesn't mean it doesn't help with the total sales of the company.

One reason why iPad 2 sales have dropped only with the introduction of the iPad Air is that the Air is the first iPad that has a clearly obvious advantage with its lower weight. Retina display and faster processor are much less obvious advantages.

Because iPad 3 performs the worst in actual usage: high resolution retina display coupled with an old CPU with overloaded GPU.

So THAT explains why it's such a dog. I love the 4 that I bought. I figured that perhaps it was because the 3 I have is also 3g, although that *shouldn't* cause issues... I've got a 2 around here as well, but it's hiding somewhere. I sold my 1 for the cost of the Otter Box case. It still worked well for reading books. I imagine that that some new iBooks content probably requires the new version of iOS to run the new app.

Great idea for Apple: Sell the entire stock of iPad 2's to Dish for $100 each, delivered, and move on... Or, donate them to the school systems here and in foreign countries. TAX WRITE OFF! (as if they pay taxes, and need another write off)

Not once in there did I say anything about having rich parents who have bought me an iPad. My point is just the fact that if you do not have a lot of spare money there is zero reason to buy an item like an iPad. But like you said one day when I grow up and I want a new iPad if I am spending $400 I am pretty sure I can afford to fork over the extra $100 for a far superior product. But some people just want and need to have things that they can't afford so they buy the cheapest version just so they can look cool when they are with their buddies.

I'm surprised the iPad 2 is still able to run the newest version of iOS. Apple's going to drop support eventually, just a matter of time. But as long as they keep selling these, can they really stop supporting the hardware in less than a year?

The iPod touch 4 was sold until right before the release of iOS 7 and immediately discontinued support.

(…)The lightning connector is missing on it, finally for a price point you are likely to go for the iPad mini instead.

The lightning connector alone should have saw the end of the iPad 2 and Apple should have opted to keep the iPad 3 instead.
How exactly is missing the lightning connector a problem, considering the array of third-party components available for the long-lived 30-pin connector? And what about people simply wishing for a larger screen, more comfortable for home-based usage?

I don't know why anyone would want to buy the obsolete Ipad 2 or Ipad mini. For another $100 you get a more up to date model. The iPad 2 and mini also using internals that are three years old, what a waste to buy them.
It's not a matter of "just $100", but also 25% price increase. That's not small difference.

(…)
I understand that some people might not have money for the newest tech, but buying something that will only be supported for a small amount of time is not a wise alternative.(…)
Why wouldn't it be wise? Buying new allows the consumer to get a factory-supported unit if anything goes wrong.

Many consumers seem to still be picking the lowest price in front of them, instead of the lifelong costs of a product. (See AT&T and Verizon carrier contracts for reference)
Can we blame them in these tough economic times? At least they get a reasonably-performing machine for much less money than a top-of-the-line one.

IMHO the 5c is not cheaper enough than the 5s to warrant a purchase of the slightly less-capable model. And Apple cleverly maneuvered to make purchasing a new 4S uninteresting, at only 8GB capacity instead of 16.

And about the other point, you forgot to mention that the Air is the first iPad with a same-sized screen as the ideal "original iPad", while being lighter-weight, as this always was my only reproach against all iPads.

It is't much of a problem now but it will be in future when lightning is being made for 3rd party hardware instead of the old 9-pin.
