So are you suggesting that the "evidence" in the first post is PROOF that there is a 2048x1536 retina display coming for the iPad?

Despite the fact that nobody seems to know who can manufacture such a display in high enough volume ...

It's certainly not bullet-proof evidence but we've been continuously hearing rumors from various different parties that pointed toward this direction for a while now and finally gotten a tangible evidence that corroborates with the rumors.

And I think you're underestimating LG and Samsung display(both been signed for the next iPad screen production AFAIK) If they want to produce this, they are more than able to do it. The question is whether they can do it cheap enough but with a customer like Apple asking tens of millions of supply, I'm sure they'll try their hardest to achieve it and will probably do so.

John 20:29

I love how people so quickly dismiss things that have evidence right in front of their face ... "oh anyone could have changed that to say iPadx2" but then are even quicker to buy into things that have NO evidence, like "horoscopes" and "God" hahaha...

I'm not saying this is definite, it just cracks me up what people let themselves blindly believe while they so easily dismiss things that CAN be backed up.

"Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe". Guess you are not blessed.

its for the lolz. the dev's of iOS are laughing their asses off now.

Why in the hell would Apple want to intentionally ramp up expectations for a 4X resolution increase knowing that they couldn't deliver? That would be an idiotic business decision.

You can't honestly believe that. As preposterous as the idea of a 4x display sounds, your explanation is just ridiculous. 1536x2048 seems insane, but when the images start appearing and the only explanation offered against it is that Apple's having a laugh at our expense, the insane quickly becomes believable.

Introducing the iPad 2 with double the screen resolution at its current price point would cannabalize MacBookAir sales.
Because there are tons of people who bought MacBook Airs who thought: "If only the iPad had double resolution, I wouldn't need a full-fledged notebook?" That makes no sense whatsoever.

There are many reasons that people might choose an Air over an iPad. None of them have to do with screen resolution. More to the point, the iPad currently has a better screen than the MacBook Air, given size, quality of panel, and viewing distance.

This doesn’t make any sense.

Now playing 720p content is going to look awful!

no it won't!!

it will look the same way any 720p content would look on 9.7inch screen, just because there are other pixels idling or being upscaled, I really don't know how it works

doesn't mean those extra pixels would make the low res content look worse.

that's like saying, now there is the iphone 4, all old apps will look awful, no the old apps look the same as they always have, and now there is more room to expand

Actually the old apps DO look worse on an iPhone 4 compared to the old screens.

Even if someone waned to take you on, how could we guarantee no one will back down once push comes to shove?

Easy - if anyone is actually up for this, let me know and we'll set up the exact conditions, sign something and both put the money in escrow; I haven't looked into it yet but am sure that there's some legitimate service that provides exactly this kind of service :)

HOW did this become about religion?

I don't know... just that people don't believe things in front of their face. There's been several reports of a high-res screen and now (somewhat) tangible evidence... and many want to ignore it all stating facts that they don't really know but think they do about what's going on in the LCD-produstion business. Meanwhile... some of those same people believe in things that have ZERO proof at all... they'll read their daily horoscopes and buy into it, they'll go to church and believe is a god that there is ZERO evidence of. It's just ironic... I'm not trying to knock others beliefs... just seems opposite.

...The current display is NOT good enough... it's the main reason why I do not have an iPad. Steve said tablets are the future and they need to stay ahead. The screen is the most important aspect at this point.
I guess that means that practically every tablet, phone, notebook computer, and desktop display ever made is "Not good enough" which kind of suggests that you've never purchased any such device before (by your own "reason"). ;)

It could also just have been for inhouse testing.

I once worked for a website that offerd hollyday houses, we did all our images in several Version, even a resolution that was way to high for the displays during that time. So wen the time was right we only needed to press the switch. You could have found em on our server, but they were there with no intention to be used in years.

On the other hand. Apple is a very big customer wen it comes to all kind of high qualety parts. I bet have planed this display for a very long time, got planets booked or even displays already in production to have em ready at wich ever date this goes on sale.
This issent a "one of 20 million different Android Tablets, a new one gets released every month" Job, this is a massing 40 Million iPads deal. I bet every plant that can handle the initial setup costs will joyfully take the deal. You can´t get more secure in the tablet marked right now.

Isn't an iPad evidence that someone designed it and built it? ;)

Huh?

I've had every iPhone, had a MacBook Air, now a MacBook Pro... I don't get what you're saying.. I'm talking present going to the future. Comparing what they did for the iPhone 4 and new iPod Touch screen... yeah... the current iPad screen is outdated.

Well if there is such a service, though I won't bet with you on your terms, I'll do this bet (if you have an ipad).

I'll trade the ipad for a new ipad 2 of the same size/antenna (no 3g = no 3g, 3g= 3g) if I lose. If I win, I want you to trade my old ipad for a new ipad2. That way the loser can sell two old ipads and get a new one with it. He loses less all around. Sure, the winner wins less all around but he still ends up with an ipad2, which is the goal of the bet. You in?

So basically the winner wins the price difference between an iPad and an iPad 2 and the loser loses the same thing? That's what I was going for, albeit for lower stakes ;)

I guess that logistically it would be easier to just transfer some cash (guessing around 200$) than shipping around new and old iPads (I'm currently living in Germany, so the shipping charges probably wouldn't be worth it), plus as a developer I'll be keeping my old iPad anyway for testing, but if you're up for a bet to be settled in cash PM me and we'll work something out, I'll take that bet :)

Geez I hope prices stay the same.
In case that was in reference to my post - even if retail prices stay the same, how much do you think the prices for used first-gen iPads in pristine condition are going to plunge on release of the iPad 2?

There's another factor to consider here though - ceteris paribus, an iPad with 2048x1536 resolution is much more likely to be sold at a higher price point than an only modestly improved one, which is more likely to be sold at the same price as the current generation, so in that sense I stand to lose more than I stand to gain, will need to think about that for a sec...
