If is 2x as fast and has 9x's graphics then who cares if 256mb, 512mb, or 1GB makes it run? I'd say 17 million tablets later that Apple knows what it's doing. I guess some people won't be happy no matter what Apple does. Go buy a Xoom then and quit the crying here.

Ummm, because "up to twice as fast" does not mean that your Safari tabs won't require page reloads every time you switch between them? "Up to twice as fast" doesn't mean your memory-heavy apps won't crash randomly. "Up to twice as fast" doesn't even guarantee that things won't slow down during prolonged use of multiple apps.

Yes, which is why you buy an iPad 3, 4, 5, etc. This is the same reason iPhone 5 will not have LTE/4G. The tech is not ripe and Apple's MO is to not deploy until it is sure it can do a good job. Look at the Android phones that have LTE/4G now like the HTC EVO or Thunderbolt (if it ever comes out). Horrible battery life. So sure, Apple could make a LTE/4G phone today. They surely have prototypes, but they can't get the UX they want with that tech today. They'll wait a generation for lower power wireless chipsets to be available. Similarly they won't over provision the RAM in today's iPad for apps that are two years away. If they did, they couldn't meet their price/power/formfactor targets.

The horrible battery life of the EVO is over stated. People are complaining because they need to charge there phones once a day. Boo freaking hoo! Plug it in at night it will last all day. The problem with the EVO's battery isn't 4G its that huge screen (WiFi and Bluetooth are horrible consumers of battery as well.)

Also, my rooted phones battery life is pretty darn close to my old iPhones.

Every time I see your posts, it's a criticism of Apple. Care to tell us why you spend so much time on a website when all you do is criticize the company this website is based on? There's a term for users like that, I won't say it though as we all know what that term is.

Also, why are you so angry all of the time, it's just a product made by Apple(that will outsell all the others like crazy), who cares how much ram it has, if it works superbly. I guess I would complain too if I wanted to have 36 tabs open just so I could have something to bitch about.

Also, wtf is up with your Sig? Against Terms of Use to spout your Conservative retardation. Where are the mods.

Shouldn't your calling his conservatism retarded get you a spanking as well then? You show yourself by your choice of words...really!

In terms of storage to CPU performance:

L3,L2,L1 caches > DDR RAM > SSD > Harddisk > Optical

No one is complaining about L3 cache size are we? Its always about the Mhz myth and ram sizes that sales people tell you when you buy a computer.

But sales people don't tell you that a 512MB of ram running at 1066mhz would out perform 1GB running at 667mhz.

So is it about the size or the speed?

At least when buying harddrives, consumers are being educated with 7200 RPM and 32mb cache sizes.

With all the '2x more powerful' and '9x graphics' flying around, one would assume it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to put 512MB RAM in these things too, considering not just the iPhone 4 with it's 512MB RAM, but also the MacBook Airs with 4GB of RAM.

To be honest though, if it's still as good as the original, who really cares what's inside it?

1GB RAM is today's standard and Apple come short of that, as with the display. It's really getting pathetic now.

I will only upgrade to an iPad 3 if:

- retina display (with Super AMOLED preferably)

- Quad core CPU and GPU

- 1-2GB of ram

- HD FaceTime cam (back facing camera useless for me)

Maybe you ought to buy a laptop. These are tablets, not the next handheld supercomputer. And what price do think Apple should charge for your dream machine? $100? LOL

Shhh he's too focused on complaining about a negative comment against an Apple product, regardless of his own knowledge of how things work on those products! I guess people assume because it's called "magical" that even things running slowly on a limped product still run on unicorn glitter so in the end it's all happy rainbows and such.

LOL ZOMG GOODNESS.. god forbid he is allowed to voice his opinion on what he wants to see in an apple product. ZOMG GET CHUCK NORRIS.

Everyone... Please be nice to the tabdroid/andrablet/honeycomb fanboys. There's not much action in the motorolarumors and googlerumors forums. Not only that but maybe their machines need 1gb of ram in order to run smoothly. It also helps them be expensive.

For all the folks that exclaim the iPad 2 is fast enough and the 256MB of memory is enough, you're wrong. I have plenty of apps (1 cost me $20) on the iPad 1 that crash often due to low memory. And that's even with nothing else running.

Regardless of what you think, 256MB of memory is just not enough these days...and yes, I and others know that it is not a full fledged computer running a heavier OS with heavier apps.

Memory is simply there to store data while applications make decisions and/or store temporary information. The iPad 2.0 should have been boosted to at least 512MB to address the current apps that crash as well as to LOOK AHEAD for future apps that want to do more than sling birds at walls. Apps like Djay or business class apps that may want to crunch some numbers are going to need more than 256MB of memory.

I'm also sure that future versions of the iOS will be heavier and thus require more memory.

We all know that you can't compare an entire product on it's bare specs...but in this case, the memory spec is a sore problem for Apple...and they purposely avoided mentioning it and are retracking any statements. Apple knows developers and techies will be ticked to find out the Rev 2 couldn't come with more memory (that probably would have cost Apple $15).

There are lots of reports that this iPad 2.0 was really just a rush-out-the-door release to keep folks interested in the iPad until a REAL update comes along with iPad 3.0. That would certainly help explain why the memory was not boosted.

Remember, 256MB is the TOTAL ram in the system...iOS is eating its share...so what's left to the apps? 200MB? 128MB? 64MB?

what a rubbish post.

first of all we don't know for sure how much memory is in the iPad 2, yet you state it almost as a fact that its 256MB.

secondly ipad2 was such a rush that they made it thinner bumped just about all the specs (minus the screen) and still managed to get 10hours of battery, while designing a new kind of magnetic case.
so i guess the real updated ipad3 will have a quad core cpu with a 1GB of video memory and 4GB RAM and storage starting at 128GB

finally they did not purposely avoid mentioning it. they have never released memory specs for iphone, ipod touch or ipad. i am actually surprised they mentioned that ipad 1 has a 1Ghz A4.

and a side note at the volume apple buys parts and the cost of technology becoming less and less 512RAM would probably cost as much as 256MB did a year ago or if not it would cost them closer to .15 cents more rather then $15.

The xoom released before the iPad 2 and has a higher resolution. And many more tablets will be released with a higher resolution than both in the next year. Apple have also gained a reputation of being the best when it comes to screen tech and now with the IPad 2 it's not the case. Don't fool yourself.

They do not have a PPI of 326 so I don't see how a non retina display on the iPad 2 is behind the standard of the market. The iPad display is not a bad display, it's just that Apple has spoiled us with the AWESOME display of the iPhone 4.

Ummm...I have not had any problems running anything on my current iPad. No crashes, no stalls, no lag. What are others running that is so intensive that others of us are missing the big 1G RAM issue? That being said, if performance specs are up, then my experience should only improve and I'll be happy.

Ever edit video before?
It's all done in memory.
I would suspect the iPad 2 has at least 512mb so it can handle short video clips.

When Apple started showing off movie editing ON the iPad, they just opened themselves up to a "potential" world of hurt in the memory department.

You know some dip ***** is going to try and edit some massive video file and them complain about it freezing and crashing while loading the file into iMovie.

the 3G is a battery killer. my former iphones now used as ipods doubled and tripled their battery life.

i have an Inspire which is almost the same as an EVO and it's the widgets that kill the battery. android is awesome at presenting information to you up front but the constant updates and syncs kill the battery since the widgets are always running as processes and services

the fact that apple has to downclock their CPU's shows that iOS is not exactly a winner at energy efficiency either

But that's the point -- lower memory has proven to be a worse user experience.

For example the reason that iPhone 3G is such a dog on iOS4 is *because* it is very starved on memory. The iPhone 3GS experience is slightly better on iOS4, but even in that case mine was using pretty much all the RAM right after a fresh reboot, so any form of multi-tasking would necessarily have to dip into swap and page out/in.

So, yeah, RAM *does* matter and it *does* have a correlated effect on the user experience -- especially for multi-tasking purposes.

iOS doesn't use swap or page stuff in or out. When it's multitasking iOS4 tends to use as much physical ram as possible so that it can... well multitask.

Neither does more ram if not used properly or if apps are inefficiently designed. Have you ever tried atomic or icab instead of safari? See how many tabs you can keep open before either needs to refresh pages when switching tabs. I think you'll find that the issue is not with the lack of ram in the case of safari, but rather the app not using available resources all that well.

This came as a surprise to me in testing, but there it is.

Not that there aren't real issues caused by the relative lack of ram. Including in safari. I face it all the time with app switching, a massive address book and act calendar syncing via MobileMe, tons of media consumption and several imap accounts. My iPad is way taxed and i welcome the additional power.

But the poster you're quoting is basically correct. The underlying specs do not trump the importance of the overall user experience (if I may paraphrase him or her). The ipad2 is visibly quicker than the iPad (check out the engadget hands on videos if you havent see it yet), and that kind of robustness is what makes the overall experience.

good for now, but limit's future happiness as ios and apps grow

the problem with 512 MB ram, in my opinion, is that it may be fine in March, but then future apps & iOS upgrades will begin to require more and more resources.

I use a 3G iphone on a daily basis - it IS slower than it was - it takes an annoying amount of time, for example, to open the camera app.

Sure, the apple desire would be for me to get a ne ipad every year to keep up... but the reality is I can't afford to flip thruogh product so quickly.

So, if the ipad2 has the same amoutn of memeory as the year old iphone 4, I'm pretty sure I'll be feeling it's slowness in a few months. I'm just hoping for a little more future-proofing...

on the contrary i have seen 2 unbiased reviews on youtube from techno buffalo and mobile burn comparing xoom and ipad side by side and both say that the ipad screen although lower resolution is a higher quality screen. their exact words are that "colors pop more" on the ipad.

I run mine with 4G on all day and WiFi + BT disabled. I get a good days use out of it (with an exchange account grabbing email every 10 minutes.)

If Apple REALLY saddled the iPad2 with 256MB RAM AGAIN then SJ is certifiably insane. I'm sorry to say, but you have to be a complete MORON to drop $500+ for a device that doesn't allow you to open more than 2 tabs in Safari.

Not bashing Apple but ...
/agree

My Safari demands more RAM for something as simple as surfing the web.
I don't want a gig of ram or 256...just 512. Performance is proven with the iPhone4.

Let me guess, your iPad also stopped a bullet without so much as a scratch on the screen, and it floats on air thereby providing a magical surfboard for you to ride to work.

You posting you stuff from your all powerful and magical Xoom. I guess only you, and those who agree with your opinion of what is acceptable, are knowledgeable? What a joke. Don't you need to get back to your Facebook page?

The ipad2 most likely has 512 MB of ram which is good so everybody needs to relax. That is of course until the iphone 5 comes out this summer with 1GB of ram like the latest Android phones do. Then we'll see ipad owners complaining about the iphone having better hardware like thay did when the iphone 4 was released.
