Checked out iPad 2 at the local Best Buy in New York. They have one white iPad on display. There's no crowd waiting to put their hand on it, just random shoppers. Half of the time, it sits there lonely.

Here are my impressions:

- Front looks like cheap LCD picture frame. You know, that $20-50 variety. Glass has a bezel on edges which refracts the light and makes it look like a picture frame even more.

- It's still heavy (I have Classic iPad). A bit more comfortable to hold, but still tiring.

- Back design looks cheap. Very simplistic shape. If you asked a beginner designer to design something flat with non-square edges, that's what he'll come up with. Meh.

- Just a bit faster, but the speed doesn't "jump" at you, because the typical tasks - switching to Home screen or between apps - takes the same time. Not worth it for users who just casually browse the web, check email, weather, etc.

- Dock connector, when plugged in, looks very ugly, very un-Apple, from the back - you can see piece of metal plug. Yikes! Ugly ugly ugly.

- Cameras suck. Photo Booth? You gotta be kidding to tout it as a great feature. Took 10s of interest, next! Meh.

- Smart Cover (was not available for hands-on, but handled it in its carton case) seems to be heavy.

- Screen looks less sharp compared to Classic iPad.

Overall, for owners of Classic iPad, iPad 2 is not worth the money.

Just IMHO. :D

He's right. They won't sell any of this piece of crap.

i really do like the ipad 1 design But the 2 isnt bad either. Until you have one you realize how nice the 2 is.

Xbox 360 sux. PS3 rulz. Oh wait, wrong forum.

If you have a laptop, and most of you do, you don't NEED an iPad, period. I certainly don't NEED my original. Love it, use it all the time, for work even, but don't NEED it. You WANT an iPad. If you don't have one you can get an original, new, for $100 off until they run out, or you can buy a 2 at full price. If you do have an original iPad, and you WANT a 2, you can go spend $500+ on it. That's $500+ you won't have to spend on something else, but if adding an iPad 2 to your original iPad is what you most want to spend that money on, you'll be happy. If you're not happy you can return it within like a couple weeks and only be out 10% of the price.

Me? I'm sticking with my original iPad. The new features don't add up to the $725 it would take to replace my current model + cover + tax. Plus I'd like, next time I buy a new iPad, to get my wife a 16GB model of the same revision. iPad 2 definitely doesn't add up to $1,300+ for me. But that's me. We have three kids. I think of how that money could be spent on the kids for things they want or may potentially need. If I were still 30, no kids, I'd probably buy an iPad 2, and then next year or whenever, a future Retina display model, just because.

BOTH iPad models are pretty nice. For owners of the original, that model is probably enough for now. But let's face it: Apple consumer devices are not sold first time, or upgraded, based all that much on tech specs and specific features. They are not new dishwashers! Some people are going to upgrade because they want to and that's how they want to spend that money. That's okay, too.

Wii rocks!

All you NEED is love, according to The Beatles. And all you NEED is food, water, clothing, and shelter, according to my 2nd grade teacher. You don't need a laptop either. People who say they need any of this stuff are delirious.

I do like the design of the iPad 1 a bit more, but some of these comments are ridiculous. Light and flimsy? It flexes?.....what?

Its slightly lighter, but it it a very solid high quality device. Itscmetal and glass not plastic....

The OP is just giving his opinion, but why entertain it? we KNOW FOR A FACT the iPad 2 is a little lighter, no cheaper to build, faster, and has more features. these are the reasons why we who have upgraded decided to upgrade. The OP is attached to how the iPad 2 makes him feel compared to the original iPad. Its his right to feel the way he feels.

Its the same reason why I will probably upgrade next year. Maybe the iPad 3 will be enough for the OP. But then again......maybe not.

1. The front looks the same as any other iDevice... i'm not sure what youre getting at.

2. Apple can't reduce weight and size from thin air. With all the hardware and battery life packed into the iPad it's amazing that it weighs as little as it does. Apple can't reduce the weight much further without sacrificing battery life or durability, in which case im sure you would whine about that.

3. Apple products have always been about simplicity.

4. 2X faster processor and 9X faster GPU is not "just a bit faster". If you haven't noticed the speed difference you either dont have an iPad 2 or dont have the original iPad. The speed difference is huge.

5. You can see a tiny bit of the plug only from the back... so? They do the same thing with the iPod touch. Not a big deal.

6. Yes, the cameras suck. That I totally agree with. Photobooth is also pretty cool but not very useful.

7. The smart cover is an accessory and it's not even bundled with the iPad. I never tried the smart cover but you shouldnt blame the iPad 2 for how good/bad the smart cover is.

8. The screen is the same resoultion as the previous iPad, only this time it's laminated to the glass, which makes it clearer than the first iPad.

Beg to differ. It's not just quality of the materials, but also the amount. Try your logic when buying a woman a diamond and see how far you get.

I'm willing to bet the iPad 2 will take less to damage than the original. I'm also willing to bet there's someone out there who can crack the screen by twisting it.

This isn't a diamond- it's an electronic device. Two totally different things.

What feels more luxurious: the older iPods, or the Classic? The older iMacs, or the newer aluminum ones?

When you pack more technology into a smaller package, it feels sturdier and sleeker, in my opinion.

I think someone is trying to get over not being able to buy the new one

seriously though, if a cover that is about 5 millimeters thick and made of polywhatever, saying it's heavy either means you a degenerative muscle disease, or you really are just looking for reasons not to upgrade, likewise for your comment that it is "still heavy"...

I personally prefer the original iPads design, I feel it's more hand friendly, but the internals of the iPad 2 are immense, I'm not going to upgrade mine just yet, maybe in time to come, but I only play infinity blade and stuff, browse the odd web page, my iPhone is used for FaceTime,

I don't need one, yes I'd like one, and could afford one, but I'd rather wait it out :)

I have both and I too like the new design. It looks good and feels even better in hands. I don't know why the OP would be so hellbent on calling 2 "cheap" but I guess it had more to do with the white color. The black one looks very similar to the iPad 1 from its front.

I for one though really love the white color I don't think it looks cheap at all but YMMV.

Ah another contributing member to MR. Thank goodness they're willing to continue to post!

OP just sounds like he's justifying not buying/being able to buy an iPad 2 by psyching himself into believing his iPad 1 isn't last years news and the iPad 2 is inferior to it.

Sour puss

Yeah just like some people keep shouting on internet forums how are they gonna skip the iPad 2 for the iPad 3 because the 3 will be such a great leap forward than the 2 which is 'just' an upgrade.

Maybe the iPad 3 will cure cancer so that it's not a pure upgrade of an existing product. Well.

The iPad 2 has lesser material and will therefore feel cheaper and be less durable.

An overly simplistic viewpoint. By lesser material I take it you mean either thinner or lower quality. According to iSuppli the iPad2's screen overlay is 0.6mm compared to 0.8mm in the old iPad. A key difference is that the iPad2's screen overlay is made from a different material than the old iPad. As you noted this contributes to the iPad2 feeling more flexible. The folks at IHS iSuppli disagree with you that this increased flexibility implies cheapness or a lack of durability.

Physical tests conducted by IHS reveal that the iPad 2 glass is more flexible than the glass used in the iPad 1, a characteristic of increased durability

Hey guys, stop being so defensive when you see another opinion. And stop with the "troll" thing just because you don't like other thoughts expressed. That's why this place is called a "forum".

If you like your iPad2, then be happy. But don't expect everyone to be with you on that, and expect some critiques and discussions with opposing opinions.

The OP titled his post" "iPad 2: Ugly". He didn't post an "opinion," he posted an inflammatory statement. Anybody here knows that coming across so negatively is just itching for a fight. And the negativity was completely unnecessary to his underlying points.

OP has a valid point for current iPad owners but a very very negative vibe to the whole post.

I was concerned that the iPad 2 was essentially a 4G iPod touch "writ large." Fortunately, using it for a 1.5 days has made me rethink that position, especially the impressive page rendering speed of the Safari web browser, even on very complex web pages (I'd recommend as a good reference test http://www.sfgate.com, the home page of the San Francisco Chronicle, which has a lot of very complex web page elements, including embedded video).

Are you Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory? :p

It's all about personal preference, really. I wanted an iPad but I waited patiently for 6 months for iPad 2. And along the way, I saw spy photos of iPad 2 and was hoping that it wouldn't resemble that. I didn't like the speaker grill and its location. So, I was pretty disappointed when it did come out that way. And not to mention the exposed dock...that is really tacky. In the end, I backed out of iPad 2 and got the 1st generation. I don't think iPad 2 is ugly, just not my type. ;).

How the hell is that any different from the original? The two look identical from directly in front.
