I have iPad 1, have been in love with it since day one, it is set up the way I want it, I use it a lot, daily.
Just bought my wife her first iPad, the iPad 2, she has fallen in love with hers, and loves it as much as I love mine.
We both couldn't be happier, both are 64GB Wi-Fi, we tether with our iPhones if needed, love em

Regarding what the original OP wrote:

yes, I think the white iPad 2 is not that beautiful. The black one though is. And with regards to the metal plug being visible on the back, the third generation iPod touch had the same thing. It's due to the curve of the iPad (or iPod) backplate. The only way I can think of Apple remedying this problem is if they supplied specific dock cables that had the plastic edge extending from the back like a curve. But that would be unnecessary.

I also prefer the design of the original iPad; I like the plainness of the back. Also the back of iPad 2 feels less luxurious.

I really like the white iPad though (although it seemed like the screen was very slightly sunken - not sure if that applies to the black one as I only tried a white one) and the smart covers are really cool. But it's the back I would worry about scratching.

On the contrary, an Apple hating manager at a company I do some work is impressed by the iPad 2.

I'm curious, what is it about the back of the old iPad that feels more luxurious than the back of the iPad2. There both aluminum so it can't be the material. Is it more luxurious because it's thicker, or because it won't sit flat on a table due to the curved back.

others have said it, but this sounds like a classic case of someone trying too hard to convince themselves that they don't need the newer version of the product they purchased. Calling it "Ugly" when the actual physical differences between the iPad 1 and iPad 2 are pretty minute is a dead giveaway of someone who's upset that their iPad 1 has become obsolete.

+1 couldn't have said it any better myself.....

I bit my lip and skipped ipad 1 just to get the 2nd gen. I also love the design of the first over the second. Should have bought the first one but I pulled the trigger on the 2nd gen. I'd be happy with either regardless probably. I slapped it into the incase book stand so that throws the lightweight device out the door. As long as you own an iPad who cares? They destroy the competition regardless. Now can we all get along and go enjoy a good game of naked twister?

Yes, it is so ugly they will sell 15-20 million of these hideous, useless units.

Some of us have a lot of money so buying this even though we have the first gen is a drop in the bucket. Sorry it is such a big decision for you.

Sounds like your trying to find out everything thats wrong with it haha....maybe not worth it for owners of original but definatley better than the original, no challenge

I'd like the OP post an honest answer to this question:

If you'd held off from buying an iPad 1 and decided to wait for the 2, would you now be looking to pick up old ipad1 stock instead, or would you go for the latest?

Hmmmm. Thought so

I too skipped the original iPad in order to get the next version. I do like the design of the second one a lot. I'm only disappointed in the iPad 2 in two ways though they aren't all that significant:

1. no retina display, or at least a higher resolution display. I was really looking forward to having an iDevice with such superb resolution that I couldn't detect a pixel.

2. the cameras are not as good as I'd like.

I agree about the design comments, the iPad 2 seems inferior to the original in almost every way. I was holding a demo unit yesterday and the screen felt very flimsy, pinching the front and back with just my thumb and forfinger, it had a lot of give. Also dock port is just lazy design, and don't get me started on the speaker grill.

Of course, in terms of functionality it's good enough to make me buy another one, but if someone say...offered me a like-new 32gb WiFi iPad 1 for about £250, I would be very tempted to forgo this generation.

I slightly prefer the design of the old iPad, but that's not enough to stop me from wanting an iPad 2. I never owned an original iPad, but I'm looking to buy an iPad in the next month or two.

Heh...you might want to start ordering now. It takes over a month to get an iPad 2. I put in an order on March 9th to J&R in New York and I'm still waiting ;)

The iPad 2 has a great design. It's all personal preference. If you don't like the design then simply do not purchase one.

Look for more logical, intelligent opinions

I agree. I own both the first iPad and iPad 2. My wife uses the original and I use the 2. We've actually OWNED and USED these devices for several hours a day since their launch so our opinions are tried, tested and fully developed. I recommend those who do not know better should completely ignore the OP's opinion outright because he has zero relative experience to base his conclusions. Consider his sole experience with ipad 2, he picked it up, probably while connected to a security cable in a store (I laugh at the OP as he attempts to say his store experience gives him any level of credibility).

So, in my opinion and experience, the flatter back on the 2 is more functional naked than the original, by a long shot. The softer curves on the back of the 2 are more ergonomically comfortable when holding with hands than the original and the lighter weight is a welcome improvement for those who look to lighten the load of travel as I do. Every ounce matters when you travel a lot and the 2 helps with my goal of continuing to lighten up. Complaining that lighter feels cheaper in the world of electronics only makes sense if you are comparing plastic versus aluminum or similar. The lighter weight of the 2 feels like a more a streamlined device designed for improved ergonomics, not for the sake of lower cost. If the OP truly believed in his own logic, he'd still be walking around with the original iPod as it was heavier and therefore more well built .

Oh, It doesn't bother me that folks are wiling to share their illogical conclusions with the forum. I don't consider the OP a troll, either, just not very intelligent in his arguments. As the market creator and leader, Apple is bound to catch heat by those who like to find fault but would fall flat on their face if they had to innovate something so robust and complex into something so simple and elegant. Apple's designs are not perfect but they are clearly driving the personal electronics market and their success is more evidence they are building things that people LOVE to use. Think about it, smart phones already had music play-back functionality yet Apple designs a phone and it redefines the smart phone marketplace. Tablet pcs were several years into production (only bought by a very small niche including me), yet Apple brought the kind of tablet that is approachable to the masses. :p

I personally love the iPad 2, it feels nice in my hand, is fast and looks really good.

I have no problem with the iPad2 as a device, I do have light bleeding, but it will be getting replaced in a month or tw, hopefully with an new unit.

I think it is the material. But I didn't spend long with iPad 2 so I'm not hugely reliable.

I'm going to have to agree with some of the people's issues wih the design. I still think a large iPhone 4 would've looked a he'll of a llot better.

I Love my iPad 2 though and getting $415 for my 32gb iPad 1 definitely helped.
