I'm going for a 32GB with 3G in black. I know I will hardly need the 3G but I know there will be a few times I'll really want it (when on holiday) and I don't have tethering included in my phone contract. 32GB should leave enough room for apps and videos when away from home.

But it's an extra £100 isn't it? That's a lot of dosh for those one or two times a year when you'll really want it.

I have o2 for my iPhone and personal hotspot costs £7.50 for a month. It takes about 24 hours to enable it though so you can't just add it if you want to use it immediately but you needn't pay for it every month. But even if I did pay it every month, in a year that would only cost me £90. Add in that it I can use that wifi for any device (my laptop, my girlfriend's phone etc), it's better value in the round than paying an extra £100 for the iPad and then buying data for it that can only be used on the iPad.

I have to say I'm with THFourteen on this one. It's one thing to spot for each other while on goes to the toilet or gets a snack but to hold the spot in a queue for hours? Nope. Not fair on those who have waited all that time.

The entire concept of a queue is first come first served - the longer you have been there the sooner you are seen. Holding a space for someone so they can leave and come back much later subverts this system. It's only a small thing of course but at what point do you stop?

What if you did this trick with three or four people? Would that be OK? And how would you feel if someone did it to you and you missed out on the product you'd been waiting for all day while someone else, fresh out of the cinema having had a lovely afternoon, ended up taking one home? If you can't be bothered to make the sacrifice of waiting in the line then you shouldn't expect to have the reward that comes from it. And you can't make out that somehow it's wrong of someone else to hold you to the same rules as everyone else. It isn't a case of not being easy going, it's a case of being willing to stand up for yourself.

We can both play the reductio ad absurdum game. You invite me to see my plan as a slippery slope from one person holding two place, to one person holding five places. Or ten. Or a hundred.

But, I invite you to see one person holding two places for a few hours part of a continuum which begins with one person holding two places for a few minutes, while a toilet break is had.

So, we both agree that one person may hold two places for a few minutes, and we both agree that it is absurd for one person to hold a hundred places for five hours. Where we disagree is whether one person may hold two places for a few hours.

I thus contend that whether or not this will upset anyone does indeed depend on how easy-going they are, since it's all a matter of degree.

Cheers

Tom

True. But logically I will probably use less than 16GB at any one time. I should really go for the 16GB wifi version but this is my first iPad and even though 3G is a rip off for the iPad and I'm not going to use it enough to wager the £100 mark up I'm still going for the 32GB 3G version. Why? Simply because I can (have saved up for this specific version). I agree I should go for the wifi only version but I want 3G functionality too.

Though I might be persuaded closer to launch time to go for the wifi only version. I can do a lot with that extra £100.

It's hardly the same thing. Holding a place while someone goes to the bathroom is merely common decency. I would do it for a complete stranger even if we hadn’t formed some kind of pact prior to queuing. We all need toilet breaks from time to time and there is no reasonable person who would argue against that.

You're comparing being fair to someone who needs a toilet break to allowing someone to game the system for personal advantage. You can ‘reductio ad absurdum’ all you like. My concession to the place holding rule was in order to take into account the limits of the human body, yours is in order to gain unfair advantage. All the Latin the world doesn't change that fact.

So no, I reject your premise that we agree on the place holding rule but to differing degrees. My position is qualitatively different from yours, not merely quantitatively as it is an allowance for the sake of common courtesy while yours is an attempt to subvert the system for your own ends and implying that someone having a problem with your subversion is in any way a character flaw on there part is insulting as well as innaccurate.

I'm thinking of going for the 3G if only to get the GPS (assisted), as the tablet would be handy for map reading/navigation!!!

It's not really the same though is it.

if I rock up at the apple store at 8am and there's 50 people in front of me, fair play to those people. Now at 1pm if everyone does what you're suggesting, oh look suddenly some lazy people who've been in bed all day, or not taken the day off work to queue or whatever are now in front of me in the queue. despite being there since 8am, I am now 100th in line, behind 50 people who haven't been as dedicated at me.

I'm a little surprised you can't see this.

Another reason I forgot to mention, though it would be a bit weird using a tablet as a tomtom.

+1.

You cant jump out of a line for a couple of hours and just expect to walk right back into place. Its not a question of causing 'controversy' - it just has the 'whiff' of something wrong about it.

If your position is qualitatively different than mine, then after what period of time has elapsed do we cross the rubicon? May one person hold two places for five minutes? Ten minutes? Twenty minutes? At what point is the arrangement qualitatively transformed from "common decency" to "subverting the system"?

I've reread my previous posts and can't see any references there to character flaws, and certainly no insult was meant. I'm not quite sure what you're getting so excited about, to be honest.

Popularity Totals

Just because I find Google Docs results a bit sketchy for an overall view here is a page with total popularity charts: http://bit.ly/iPad2PopTotals it's coming along quite nicely with a draw on 64GB & 32GB iPad 2's and lots towards Black models which is great as I want a white!

Leather seems to be most popular which is what I am going for (Navy) too!

If that happened exactly as you described, then I think I would be a little alarmed.

I don't think that is going to happen though, whether I am able to partner up with someone or not.

All this uncertainty is driving me crazy. With the iPad 1 we just got to pre-order weeks before, and forget about it.

Now, nobody has a clear picture... argh!

I was tentatively planning to book the morning off, but that could mean waiting a whole day for nothing. There's an Argos close to where I work, which is another possibility... it's really looking to be a free-for-all on Friday.

If ordering goes live online, I imagine I'd order immediately, then head out and try to score one on the highstreet. If I succeed with the latter, I can just cancel the online order. If I fail... I can just wait until next week.

I don't have any faith that third party resellers in this backwater city of Norwich will have a lot of stock

Personally checked with Apple, Carphonewarehouse, Currys, Comet and PC World.

Stock levels are ample for first day of release. Queuing will just provide Apple free news coverage. With some many stores stocking it I would go and tuck in to a decent meal and turn up after the queues have chilled down a little.

You're not seeing my point. Any attempt to game the system in order that you can spend less time in the line but still be ahead of others who have spent more is subverting the system. The common decency is in allowing someone to leave to use the bathroom or get a drink if they're thirsty. That is why my position is qualitatively different. Not because of the amount of time (that would still be quantitative) but because of the reason for it.

Saying someone was not 'easy going' enough would count as saying someone has a character flaw in my book. I'm sorry if that wasn't you - it's possible I have my posters mixed up on this one. Either way, I'm not at all upset, I was merely clarifying for you why letting someone use the bathroom out of a sense of fairness and courtesy is not the same as arranging to subvert the first come-first-served rule for personal advantage. I hope that point is now clear.

I dont see how... just look what's going on in the US. people are STILL standing in line a week after release day...

Very kind of you! But yes; brevity is good. I applaud your summation.

Going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing a significant portion of iPad 2 stock was on a ship (or ships) to the UK long before stock issues were encountered in the US.

They're not going to turn around stock sent to the UK and start hauling it back to the US for sale.

Not to mention, aren't the UK units subtly different to the US ones? One obvious difference, of course, would be the lack of an AT&T-specific device for the UK.

I don't think *our* stock would be adversely affected by what's going on stateside, there are too many reasons why it would make no sense. Now, if they could teleport iPads overseas instantaneously it might be a different matter.

Note, he says "first day of release"

All bets are probably off after then!
