I do not understand why the OP is being lambasted over this thread. He has a decent point. He is only trying to get an idea of how far away it stands. It's been said of this upcoming playstation phone, could somewhat compete with the playstation 3. The ipad is more than comparable, how is this any different. Nobody has programmed specifically for this platform yet, but people think they know the potential. The only "fail" I see in this thread is that of everyone whom who thinks that they know what they are talking about. seems to be alot of you

Sorry dude, there is no comparison between an ipad 2 and a 360. That is a fact

Infinity Blade for iPad 2 looks as good as anything I've seen on 360.

Im sorry, are you on some kind of drug?
Infinity blade looks like crap compared to 360 games. You are saying it has better graphics than Crysis 2? Yeah ok

But is HAS caught up with past consoles.

It's interesting to know from a technical point of view what level it's at.

Personally I think Visuals are ahead of speed with the iPad, that also has a lot to do with years of skill and experience by talented games programmers these days using their well developed "tricks" to make us believe what we are seeing on our screens.

Consoles I'm certain the iPad is better than.

Sega Master system.
Nintendo NES
Nintendo SNES
Sega Megadrive
Nintendo 64
PS1

I'm not 100% about

Gamecube
PS2
Dreamcast

And don't think it's quite at
Original Xbox
levels.

What do you think?

I don't think it's to a level where it could duplicate the original HALO on the Xbox.

You are right. iPad 2 is in between PS2 and Xbox 1.

There really is no comparison. While Infinity Blade looks great it still lags behind something like the Mass Effect or the Gears of War series. Infinity Blade does not even have free roam and is not populated by AI. The NGP will be more powerful when it comes to gaming than the iPad 2 and that is still behind the PS3 and XBOX 360.

Thanks.

Yeah, that was my kind of feeling from what I've seen.

Certainly better than PS2 I'd say, but not quite up to original Xbox in terms of the amount on screen with detail.

I think some people are seeing this as putting the iPad down, I don't. If anything I think it's the opposite. I'm actually VERY impressed it's at the level it is for such a thin low power device.

Actually, my only concern is for iPad3.

By rights, if Apple again, jump to fit the very best they can, let's just say it's a 4 core CPU and a faster dual core CPU, perhaps 1.2 or even 1.5Ghz.

Ok, I'm hoping a LOT there and both of the above probably won't happen, but let's just say they did.

That would be outstanding, and probably raise the games performance to an Original Xbox, or even perhaps dare I hope a little more in some things.

However, if they also fit a Retina Display, or to be more accurate double the rez in X and Y to 2048x1536 then that's going to kill all the speed ups from the new chips power as it will take 4x the amount of power just to move the screen around.

I don't know how they are going to get around this, unless they find some trick they can use.

Graphics look good on iPad 2 but the games are so so. Chic games are longer and have more replay value

iPad is a console game

Ipad is a console gaming system, well, not yet exactly. The ideal set-up would be the iP2 hooked into your TV via HDMI cable. Next, a developer like chair, will release a blue-tooth game pad which will control your iPad game. This will be awesome. There are already games that allow you to use your iPod as a wireless controller.

Also, the OP question seems perfectly reasonable to me. No need to be "that guy", who is dismissive for the sake of being. Most of the posters don't really know why it can't be compared, they just know that it shouldn't be. Quote some real numbers if your so much in the know.

One thing is how games look and how developers design the game, and the other thing is the capability of the hardware. Usually, if games are designed just for one system, like they are for home game consoles, they should be able to max out the hardware. We've seen that with 360 and PS3, just not with iPad 2 yet.

Look at this arcade board, the specs aren't too good, but when you pair an embedded OS and developers designing the game for only 1 console, the results can be great.

Looks like this thread has some relevancy again with the announcement today of the new potential 20x faster chips for the iPhone and iPad, and particularly in light of the higher def displays with retina and the thrust towards television.

Apple has proved an exceptionally viable gaming platform in the handheld arena and it will be interesting to see how they now translate this over to the console arena, particularly with the TV chatter and new controller bits you hear here and there.

I will say this, after having sampled the goods of the Kinect for a while now, there is a LOT to be learned in the UX department and Apple could come along with a superior technology and mop the floor with their own behinds if so desired. Kinect games just reek right now thanks to the wonderful lack of standards and guidelines from MS.

I have a UI/UX tirade each time I use the darn thing!

Sorry to bump an old thread. I'm well aware that there is still little comparison, but after playing a Vita recently I'm pretty sure that the next iPad will close the gap. Especially if they use that chip mentioned above (or a similar tech).

The Vita has similar hardware to the A5 in the 4S/iPad 2 except both the CPU and GPU are quad cores instead of dual cores. They are clocked lower (the CPU is at least), but to be fair there is less of an overhead (and 256mb of dedicated vRAM in addition to 512mb system RAM).

Since the new iPad 3 is going to have a retina display, and because these things are usually better than the last one hardware-speaking, it's probably a safe bet that it will be more powerful than the Vita. Even if still dual core (a faster dual core and better GPU would best an inferior quad any day, plus most stuff is designed for two cores primarily anyways).

The Vita's quality is in the same ball park as the 360/PS3, even if the CPU is not. (seriously, don't we know better than to judge CPUs by their clock speed these days? Only when comparing like architecture). So the iPad 3 will probably also be in the same ball park. With the lighting and other fancy techniques seen in the latest games, the environments are way smaller but the small screen visuals already trick your eyes.

We are forgetting the 360 looks like crap compared to a modern PC gaming rig. You cannot compare the platforms on an Apples to Apples comparison as the OS running the system plays a huge roll. Consoles will lay waste in the future to other devices as there is more development and research money in iOS device hardware than Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo combined and that’s a fact Jack.

Consoles are failing big time to capitalize on being the one box media system. Xbox is getting closer but Sony should be smacked. The PS3 has a BluRay drive and the hardware ability to destroy the Roku and every other niche box out there. Why can I get tons of streaming channels on a Sony BluRay player but not the PS3? Sony Deserves their fate they are the new RIM. lol
