It's not really needed until you realize what Apple trying to do with iOS. They are trying to eat up the marketshare of Nintendo and Sony further with A5-equipped devices. Back in 2009, Apple made a massive leap from the older PowerVR MBX-lite to the then-new SGX535. The SGX535 was multiple times faster than the older chip and it was turned out to be an excellent decision as the chip lasted two generations and eventually spawned some very fine visuals in titles like the Infinity Blade.

A production planning is a process of compromise and sacrifice, and I think the fact Apple chose to have such fast GPU should tell people that they are very serious about furthering their gaming prowess in the coming years.

The truly intriguing part, and I think it'll happen sooner or later, is when Apple pumps up their Apple TV with app store and some bluetooth-enabled controllers for games. It obviously won't as good as true game consoles, but at $100 and with a huge legion of potential developers, I would be very scared if I was Nintendo.

I've been saying for years and years, I wish Nintendo would stop making hardware and do what they do best, Software.

They would make a killing producing their Titles, for PS3, XBox, Android, iOS, Windows, OS X machines.

I don't want to change the focus of the conversation, but hasn't Nintendo already made a killing with their hardware? Look at the DS. Look at the Wii. The 3DS is coming out (it's already out in Japan and sold out). I think it's too early to say what Nintendo should do because they have been so successful.

Now what happens in 5 to 10 years is a completely different story, but if Apple does anything, they will force Nintendo to improve and do new things.

I'm sure Nintendo did all the calculations and concluded there's more money yo be made from selling both software and hardware while collecting licensing fees. They've been doing extremely well and although the future is uncertain it's hard to criticize their business model so far.

As for my thought on the iPad 2...

Nintendo works so well because they're like Apple - they design the software around the hardware. If Nintendo started making games for multiple systems it would be the same as if Apple made OS X run on all PCs.

But definitely the next ATV will be able to game - the A4 could push out very nice visuals at 1024x768 so the A5 with 9x the power should be even better graphics at 1080p (1080p has 2.6 times as many pixels as 1024x768). It just depends when Apple is going to pull the trigger. The current A4 will be around for another 18 months or so (assuming the iPhone 4 sticks around as the budget model for 2011-12) so there is no need to do it this year. I guess it depends on whether Apple can keep the price down and add more storage (probably 32 GB). Next year sees the PowerVR series 6 chip which will usher in PS3/360 levels of graphics (probably even more powerful).

No retina = no sale. The thing is a snooze-fest. Call me when iPad has a retina display, otherwise I'll stick with my 11" MacBook Air.

Seriously, the pixels on that thing are huge. It is straight up unacceptable.

Your MBA= 135ppi
iPad=132ppi

You're telling me the extra 3ppi is noticeable?

My opinion? Good update, not good enough for me to upgrade. I'm really just holding out for retina, after using the iPhone 4. The dual core and graphics boost is nice, but I would never use the cameras. I actually think the smart covers are one of the better features.

We'll see, I have a feeling I'll get one in a couple of months after reading reviews and such, but for now my iPad is great as is.

impressive

I personally think the upgrades (it's an upgrade not a brand new design which Jobs was calling it at the iPad launch event) are pretty impressive but...as someone who has been wanting an iPad for a year now, I'm going to purchase a used iPad 1 on craigslist.

Simply put, I don't have much use for a camera, I already have an iPhone and Macbook Pro so the main function of the iPad for me would be just for ****** around and some e-reading.

I think it's great that we have some great choices now for those looking for value. It's a win-win situation for all.

I'm thinking that I'll probably hold out for iPad 3.

That's what I'm thinking right now...but who knows...there's still 6 days to go. :)

The insides were redesigned. I thought Steve Jobs was bull****ting when he said "completely redesigned" but the insides are indeed redesigned from the 1g.
Also, how much do you plan to buy one for on Craigslist? A $350 refurb is a damn good deal considering you also get Apple's 1-year warranty.

craigslist bargain

$350 is an absolute steal. Though I found a sweet deal on Craigslist today and took the plunge. I am now a proud owner of a 16GB iPad Wifi, still on warranty for $300.

Yes, the faster chip, and more ram (is this true? i'm reading different accounts on this feature), and the ability to edit video and create music does make the iPad 2 a very worthwhile purchase for many. I guess I've been watching these keynotes for a decade now and have no patience for the dramatic embellishments. ;)

Congrats on your purchase. I wasn't debating whether the iPad2 was worth it or not. I was just saying that TECHNICALLY it's been redesigned. You can see how different it is here:

Neither was I, it's totally agree that it's redesigned internally as well as dramatically thinner. Knowing that, I still couldn't help rolling my eyes when Job's said it was a complete redesign. And I'm the type of person who definitely responds to aesthetics more (I'm barely techie). Just wave a piece of apple hardware in front of me and I start salivating.

I once switched my website completely to CSS from table, changed numerous little bits and graphics here and there and made Javascript run much smoother. It took a lot more work than my original design even though it vaguely looked the same from afar.

Long story short, all my friends thought it was still the same site. Some noticed different effects in menus but that's about it. :(

I don't need one, but I'm interested enough to get the wifi version...how much is the case gonna be?

iPad 2 seems like a nice improvement over the first version.
  • Faster processor.
  • Much faster graphics.
  • Smaller (significantly IMHO).
  • Lighter (Again, significantly IMHO.)
  • 2 cameras.
  • Can use on Verizon.
  • HDMI out.

I currently have an iPad 64GB 3G. Use it all the time. This upgrade seems like a good upgrade to me.

If I didn't have an iPad, I would definitely be getting an iPad 2. For now, I'll wait until my current contract runs out and then purchase an iPad 3.

If it has 256 of RAM I may just pass. It would be really disappointing for it to have so little.

Meh, the hardware bumps are nice but they're nothing amazing. But it wasn't the hardware that stopped me buying an iPad 1. It was iOS. iOS is annoyingly crippled enough on my iPhone. On a tablet it's absolutely intolerable.

No sign of any massive, massive improvements in iOS - no sale.

just curious as to what constitutes a re-design to you guys? you have to realize there's only so much you can do to a device that's biggest feature and attraction is its screen. do you say it's not a redesign because it's still made out of the same aluminum? or because it has the same size screen?

i really don't understand how people are saying this is a minor upgrade and it's not a true re-design

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

I held out waiting for this model. It will replace the function of my netbook in a much better package.
