Good post. I think they'll call it 3 but not change form... Or just drop the numbering finally and call it "new iPad" (early 2012)

i am looking forward to a retina screen. if the screen doesn't improve, i'll be pretty unhappy, though i may upgrade anyways for the faster processor :)

i recently discovered that pdfs don't do so well on android screens. the 4:3 ratio turns out to be best for viewing them. so, i guess i am stuck with apple!

Just wondering what issues you've found. Admittedly, I view PDF's almost exclusively on my large 16x9 monitor and haven't really compared them to the 4x3 format on the iPad so I'm not sure what you're referring to.

A lot of great buzz turned into a chorus of "huh?" when the iPhone 5 turned out to be the 4S. I wonder if Apple will factor that into their future iPad plans?

The fact is that iPad is no longer the only tablet out there. They currently have an edge in all areas except price. My local WalMart sells five different tablets but not iPad. A young mother recently show me the new Asus Eee Pad she bought for her kids. I only had a couple of minutes to look at it, but it seemed far more capable and complete than I expected. In Canada, this device costs $496. The iPad starts at $519.

I hope that Apple will push the envelope in both directions - a base model at the current price that includes a 5MP camera to compete with the Eee Pad and other low-price tablets. Add a second speaker for stereo without headphones. Call it the 2S. Throw in a $20 iTunes card.

I would also like to see a "Pro" version at the high end. Use the quad processor and support it with more RAM and a roomier battery. Include Siri. Use faster flash. Call it the 2P, the 2X or the 3. Whatever. Throw in some extra iCloud storage for the first year.

I predict that higher resolution screens and a choice of matte or glossy won't make an appearance on iPad until at least 2013 because they will add considerable cost without increasing the iPad's competitiveness in the market.

It will take a *lot* to get me to upgrade in 2012. New colours or a better camera won't be enough. I'm looking forward to see what Apple makes!

oh. just me then?

the pdf pages didn't fit the screen well. the margins (and notes there) were cut off, or if i shrunk it to include the margins, the page displayed significantly smaller than it does on the ipad (the page being viewed plus part of the ones before and after visible). is this just me or the pdf i was using?

I guess it all depends on your perspective. On the Tab 8.9 it's a higher resolution screen, so it looks sharper. And it will also depend on what application you are using. I could use Goodreader on my Android. Quickoffice does a competent job.

16:9 ratio works well on "little" tablets, that are made for content consumption. On those smaller tablets, you can't touch type on the keyboard, so it doesn't matter.

On a real tablet computer, that you do work on, like writing books, making presentations or white papers, you want a full sized keyboard that you can type on for hours at a time. 4:3 ratio is better for that. With an iPad for example, you can see a full 20 lines or more of text while typing and have room for formatting bars and such.

Typing on a 9" tablet at 16:9 is more of a challenge. Either they have to squash the keyboard vertically, or you have a really tiny little window of 5-6 lines of text you can see at a time. Either way, the experience isn't great.

I hope Apple keeps using 4:3 for a long time.

You are kidding, right? Apple who until just recently gave you one keyboard no matter how big/small your hands are (now at least they have two), or Android where you have umpteenth keyboards to choose from to suit your taste?

I don't think so. Higher resolution screens and multiple keyboard choices are going to trump any real or perceived advantage of 4:3 any day of the week. And Saturdays and Sundays too.

all of the virtual keyboards are inadequate for extended writing. i don't really care much about that sort of thing. the display, on the other hand, needs to show a full pdf page as large as possible. for me, that's the 4:3 ration.

i'll take another look at android stuff, but based on my fiddling around with it thus far, the ipad is better for pdf reading.

I use Swiftkey. I also like Thumb Keyboard too, but Swiftkey predictions are awesome.

There is plenty of room to improve the design of the iPad. I expect to see a blending of the screen into the body from someone. Sony "sort of" tries this with their S tablet wedge. We'll see a 1/4" thick device with bull-nosed edges and no seam between the display and the body eventually. The only holes will be the headphone jack and micro-perforations for mic and speakers. No need for the dock port now that we are PC-free. Charging will be inductive when the device comes in contact with the new dock. The year after that the headphone jack will disappear when we get a new earbud set that connects magnetically for signal to one of the internal magnets on the edge. Signal to the cable will also be inductive.

JMHO.

Did you just describe something that would render everybody's existing headphones as incompatible?

The dock connector is still necessary for numerous accessories, including Apple's own camera connection kit. And honestly I don't think a new headphone connector would go over too well. (Just look at how people reacted to the third gen iPod Shuffle.)

Why not blue tooth earbuds!
Also the keyboard could be a Bluetooth that shows a virtual keyboard however you want at the bottom of the iPad what ever size you want. Leaving the screen all viewable.
Not sure how that'd work on your lap though

Better battery, perhaps a speed bump(But I think they might want to keep the A5 their top model since it took so long to get it into the iPhone line) increased storage.

Generally, I'm hoping Apple waits for the retina display that used the same ratio that the iPhone increased. The smaller screen resolution update(the 1600 by 1200 rumor)while I'd ignore it, I'd rather wait for the proper increase so app usage isn't thrown for a loop.

I also don't think Apple should be launching an A6 device before the iPod touch goes to A5 update.

The main problem with Bluetooth headphones is battery life. On top of having to charge the headphones themselves, you will also have to charge your iPad at least a little more frequently.

I'm not sure I follow you on the keyboard part. Are you suggesting some kind of secondary screen to display a keyboard on? If so I think just using a physical Bluetooth keyboard, which the iPad already supports, is more practical.

What's im guessing we'll see is a hybrid GSM/CDMA version. would love Verizon service with an unlocked GSM side for international travel. If not, I'll just get the AT&T iPad. Both work for me. Figured i'd get verizon service since I have AT&T on my iPhone

The dock connector is also necessary for transferring self-shot videos from the iPad to iPhoto, unfortunately.

Nope. I've played with and bought a couple of Android devices. I like reading in portrait mode and most Android devices are meant to be used in landscape. I can't stand how skinny the screen looks in portrait mode on an Android tablet, so no, 4:3 is not an advantage any day of the week. I like how people make umbrella statements like this when really it's just a matter of YMMV.

I agree. And if you read the post I was replying to, you'll understand my response.

I own the iPad 2 and the Galaxy Tab 8.9. I'm not sure where you get the idea they're "meant" to be landscape. My Tab works just fine either way. Actually reading books portrait with the highe res screen is a lot nicer than my iPad, not to mention easier to hold since its thinner and lighter too.

They can be used in either landscape/portrait, but there's a reason the front-facing camera is positioned in landscape mode while the iPad's is in portrait mode.

Your last sentence is, again, a case of YMMV, so I don't think it's worth debating as if there's any objectivity to the issue. I happen to prefer reading in portrait on my iPad over reading in portrait on my Android devices.

1. add the retina display

2. add a 7.85" model … the ideal size of a paperback novel

3. i'm going to get hate for this, but pixar makes a crap load of great 3D movies, none of which can be seen in their full glory on an Apple device :apple:

Glasses-free 3D isn't really "full glory", pretty much nothing but a decent theater showing is.
