Exchanged my original iPad yesterday. The second one was even worse - ridiculous amount of light bleeding. The apple store techs easily replicated the problem. Took that back as well and the third one was perfect. No light bleeding at all.

Apparently, you can do retail swaps (brand new iPad in a box) as many times as you want if you have a legitimate problem (light bleeding). Exchanges through the genius bar can only be done once. So, they'll open another unit and you can compare them at the store and pick the one you want to keep. If the new one is worse than your current unit, you are screwed. If it is the same or slightly better than your current unit, you are screwed again. If it doesn't have any problems, you are in luck, but I would not count on that happening.

Wait, so you went through three iPads until you found one with out any bleeding issues yet you can only get one at the genius bar? I think I'm misreading your post, but it's almost like you're saying two different things.

Had this problem last year. Genius bar only allowed one swap but Apple support said such a rule did not exist. So when I tried to get my second one replaced they got really rude and refused to replace it. Had to send in all faulty iPads after that (3). But, I guess it really depends on where you go and the demand for the iPads.

I hat to bust everyone's bubble but this is one of the rare times when a picture is worthless. What was the exposure? Did you set it manually or was the camera on auto mode leaving the shutter open trying to get the photo to normal brightness? This is the photographic equivalent of those awful auto leveling microphones on camcorders. The music gets louder and the mic reduces gain. Music gets softer and the mic increases gain. Result is the sound recorded is nothing like reality.

Mine is pretty much exactly like the OPs...probably the same display manufacturer.

Yes, there is a genius bar swap and a retail exchange through one of the sales associates.

Genius Bar - they take another unit out, start it up and you can compare them at the store. The problem is that you can do that only one time. So, if the new one has a problem, you either take it or keep your old one.

Retail Swap - Ask a retail associate to do an exchange. You get a brand new iPad in an unopened box. They use a different system than the Genius Bar, so you can exchange it until you get a good unit.

If you do a Genius Bar swap, you keep your old box, charger and so on. The only thing they swap is the iPad itself. With a retail exchange you leave everything and get a brand new unopened iPad.

After the second defective unit, the Genius Bar told me they'll bring one out and I can compare them and pick one. I said, no thanks, I'll just return it. The rep then told me to talk to one of the sales guys for a retail exchange. Seemed like that was against protocol but all that matters is the third unit is perfect.

Gotcha. I'll try to do a retail swap first and bring all the things in the box. Thanks for the Protip!

Hey, guys, is my iPad 3 bad? All of these are on 100% brightness.
