Apple said it themselves. Can't see iPad 3 coming out so soon after iPad 2.

Just means it'll be the iPad 2S or something like that which still falls under the "iPad 2" umbrella. I think there will be a move to Q3 launches - it doesn't make sense to launch a new product less than three months after Christmas when lots of these devices are sold. the iPad iOS launches have been Q3 for the first 2 models and it looks like the iPhone iOS (and hardware) has been moved to this timescale so it really wouldn't surprise me if we didn't see an iPad 2.5 this year - probably with the same A5 chip, 1 GB ram, better cameras and maybe a faster GPU, but saving the real goodies (high-res screen, quad core A6 chip etc) for the full-fat iPad 3 next year .

I agree! I literally just bought one the day before this news. I'd be deeply annoyed with Apple if it were true. I'm tempted to send it back anyway.

There's no iPad 3 coming this year, plain and simple. If there is an extra device coming this year. I think it's more likely that Apple may come with two iPhones this time around more than anything.

In many cities, u still have to hunt down an iPad 2. I imagine if anything, Apple is getting ready to ramp up iPad 2 volume for the holiday season anyway. That's where their concentration as far as the iPad is going, not in a another version of it.

iPad 3......NEXT MARCH/APRIL.

It's common for Apple to surprise consumers with a refresh out of nowhere. My last uninformed apple purchase was in like 2004. Consumers just have to pay close attention. Apple just wants your money. They are in that sweet spot now, where people will upgrade anytime they come out with a new gadget.

Expect more of this as Jobs drops the helm, and the board makes the decisions.

That goes for every single hardware manufacturer out there since they all want to avoid the Osborne effect. If anything, recently Apple has been better than others in this regard because their product refresh cycle has been somewhat predictable and their portfolio isn't as large as most of the competitors.

I don't know what all the fuss is about. Considering Apple's outstanding customer service these days, if they in fact do introduce the iPad 3 in September, I'm pretty sure we will be able to exchange our iPad 2s for the new model at zero or nominal cost at the Apple Store. Rest assured that we will all be taken care of... :d

It makes a lot of sense for apple to release a "pro" version of the ipad. Much like the people who bought a macbook don't complain when new macbook pros are released, I can't see why a current ipad owner would cry if apple released an ipad pro this year. I'd love an ipad pro, since the jump from ipad 1 to 2 wasn't that big.

I don't understand why some people get worried over new releases. Just sell your current device to subsidize the next.

+1 on this. There will be a new version of any product sooner or later, so you are left with 2 choices only:

  • Upgrade to the new version
  • Continue with the version you already own

There is a joke I'd like to share with you:

Whats common between Cellphones and Marriage,......................................................................................................... You regret later that you could have got a better model in case you'd wait for a while ;)

If there is an iPad3 released this year it most likely won't have the next gen A6 processor inside as Apple hasn't even decided yet which company will produce it or where it will be built...

Higher clocked 28nm A5 Dual Core? possibly
More Memory? possibly
Better graphics? possibly
Better cameras? most likely
Thinner/Lighter form-factor? that would be par for Apple
Higher Res display? most likely, but probably not a Retina
Higher storage capacity? possibly dropping the 16GB and going 32, 64, 128

I think if there IS a new iPad out in September, it will be a similar "evolutionary" jump as the iPad2 was to the original iPad and not the "revolutionary" jump some people are hoping for...although IMO there will be no new iPad this year...

Today the apple insider along with Reuters and macrumors have all posted stories about the new iPad 3 thAts supposed to be coming in september. I thought this rumor was dead?! I just got my iPad 2 and I will be uberpissed at apple if they do release a new iPad n a few months!

Theyre not going to release a new one.

I just c it as being kinda greedy on apples part. They have over 85% of the tablet marketshare. No one is even close in this race so why update prematurely? This will upset many consumers of the iPad 2. Sure I will still enjoy my product, but if I had of waited 3 more months, I could possibly have a better product for the same price.

Apple should absolutely sit still, top innovating and do nothing because they are afraid of "pissing off" people like you. Yes, this makes total sense. I'm certain this is how Apple grew to be a $60B/year company.

I'm not totally disagreeing with your sarcasm, but there IS a danger of Apple updating too quickly as there are only so many people that will go out and purchase new $600+ hardware every 6 months especially in a down economy...the've been successful thus far in going with a 9-12 month cycle...cutting it to 6 months could become somewhat problematic...
Again, innovations in the software that extend the lifespan of older hardware yet takes advantage of the advances in the newer hardware seems to work for them

This I agree with and it concerns me...heaven forbid a bean counter takes the helm again... that will be the end of Apple as we know it...

So it's okay for Samsung, Motorola and everyone else to update their Android phones 2 or 3 times per year to keep their revenue stream flowing but it's NOT okay for Apple to revise a product twice in one year? Why this double standard? Look, it's absolutely in Apple's best interest to stay ahead of the pack. If a new iPad 3 will help, then by all means bring it! Let's not be silly or stupid here. Apple pretends it doesn't care about market share, but it does. They just won't state it publicly because they want to give off the appearance of being above the fray, being "better than that". But ultimately they will do what drives their stock price higher and what pleases shareholders - with or without Jobs on board. Apple is now much bigger than Steve Jobs, and I'm tired when people make this about him.

Buying technology is like flushing money down the toilet. It is only an "investment" if you use it to generate cashflow. The value of technology almost always goes down, and anything you buy is already obsolete the day it hits the market because something better is already under development. Be happy with what you have and wish Apple the best. What else is there to do?

To agree with this, one would have to agree with the premise that it IS ok for Samsung and Motorola to update their Android products 3 times a year...I'm not sure I agree that they are making the right decision there...at some point they begin to lose the "excitement" of a "new and improved" model (especially when the "new and "improved" model isn't really all that "new and improved")...
Sure there are always a small amount of techies that will drool over a new update 3 times a year but for most, I think it is overkill...
Apple has done well with their current 9-12 month cycle...I don't think that will change while Steve is still heading the company...

I can't imagine Apple intends to release an updated iPad when the iPad 2 is still selling faster than they can make them. Its very uncharacteristic of the company and doesn't make any sense from a business perspective -- especially when competitors have not gotten close to catching up yet.

The parts being ordered are likely for another product line. Perhaps the new MBA will come with an ipad-like display to compliment the many touch friendly features of lion.

I just dont see it but hey, bring on the better display. Everyone needs another ios device...

Do Samsung release a top end model once a year? Yes the Galaxy tab lasted a full cycle and yes there is a new top end tablet and some ones below but they are entry level cheaper ones. Samsung won't release a proper update until next year.

The iPad 2 was release as a top end model right? So if they release one above the IPad 2 with a minor update it makes the IPad 2 a cheap alternative. If it's an IPad 3 with a major update then IPad 2 is last gen model. It's unlikely Apple will do this they are more likely to offer one with a smaller screen and cheaper which even that won't happen.

As for somebody who said better cameras well if Apple wanted the IPad to be a camera phone tablet they would have released one with a better camera. No doubt it will be refreshed in the next update but even Samsung dropped the mega pixels on there new tablet.

iPad 2 is streets ahead of anything else. Even if there was better tablets theres already better and good rivals to the iPhone does that mean Apple go releasing three a year? No.

I reckon it's all media jargon written by people with other tablets, iPad 1's or none at all so they make everybody who stood in a queue for an IPad 2 panic that a new model will be coming soon. Without being too insightful it's obvious to anybody if they want to release a new IPhone come September they would rather focus on that than take the shine off by rushing another tablet on to the Market.

The PS4 is already in development so you see the PS3 people worried? I think not.
