Please, please people don't get your hopes so high I want to remind you what happen with the iPhone 4S, when everyone thought it was going to be a iPhone 5 and got mad @ Apple (which was funny :p). So please keep in mind that what you have in your head as an iPad 3 might not been what comes out March.

As for the rumor, it's ok (with a hit of nonchalance) and :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
The fifth generation iPhone, iPhone 4S, was ánd is a disappointment. The sales may tell you otherwise, but compared to the iPhone 4 this was a very small upgrade. Heck, I even refused a free iPhone 4S 16 GB (of course only because I already own a 32 GB iPhone 4 - I would might have decided otherwise if the fifth generation iPhone had turned out to be a much bigger upgrade).

I think you have lost your mind down that post.

If there is going to be a quad core processor it really seems to me that Apple is actually trying to attract power users as well as casual users.

Casual users won't be concerned with how quick the processor can work rather they just want it to work. A quad processor is attractive to power users.

If this is true and the price is right I might consider getting one.

You do have to question though if there is a quad core processor how long its going to take developers to take advantage of the 4 cores. They'll have to pick between compatibility (iPad 1 & 2) or maximum graphics and performance (iPad 3).

As far as I know the ASUS Transformer Prime is the only tablet on the market with a quad core and it is quite interesting if Apple is starting a spec war.

Though I really have doubts to a quad core processor for the simple fact Apple isn't a spec hungry developer and they DO have a tendency to baby step product lines, which is a extremely smart move profit -wise and future product idea-wise.

How would you define a "power user" on a tablet? I would argue that Apple has gone after "power users" from the very launch of the iPad. From the very beginning, Apple has attempted to make the argument that the iPad is for more than just reading text and watching video. In 2010, there was the launch of iWork, which has progressively gotten better over the last two years. In 2011, there was the launch of iMovie and Garage Band. One wonders what the bulk of the 2012 launch event will consist of, since I imagine only 1/5 of the time will be spent on hardware.

I imagine that the main thrust of the new iPad's event will be the theme that an increasing number of iPad users are using their tablets for more and more tasks that would otherwise be done on a desktop OS based machine. I imagine there will be some specious argument where they claim that the only competition (the Fire and Nook) are nothing more than glorified readers without the real estate or the ecosystem to do anything besides consume content. Finally, Apple will up the ante on what a tablet should do.

Concerning specs. I believe that Apple only uses specs on iOS devices only so far as to maximize the user experience. If a quad-core processor with a retina display is what is necessary for the user experience they want, they will use such. If not, then they will wait until it is necessary. For as much of the panning that the iPad 2 received as an iPad 1.1 or whatever, it really was a substantive leap. It does feel different and respond ever so slightly faster. Typing quickly on an iPad 2 is noticeably an improvement over an original iPad and whether its the memory or the processor that is responsible, it is important.

Finally, while things may always seem merely iterative, can't we agree that with the iPad, Apple has been more aggressive on features, price, and performance than virtually any prior device they released in the last decade?

I highly doubt we will see 128GB storange in the iPad probably ever, especially now with the advent of cloud technology and the ability to store all your content there. One thing the iPad 3 really does need is at least 1GB of RAM, otherwise people will begin complaining about the hardware not being up to snuff , without adding better internal specs I see no need to run out and buy an iPad 3 just because it has a nicer display. Quad core, 1GB of RAM, and a retina display would be a perfect jumping on point for new iPad users as well as a solid reason for existing iPad 1 & 2 owners to take the plunge, if they're missing even one of these three additions than I see no reason for someone not to just buy a cheaper iPad 2 (considering they lower the price, as rumored).

Will be the top selling computer of 2012! Good job apple.

On

If the iPad 3 has a quad core chip in it, then are we to believe it will be based on the same chipset as the Sony Playstation Vita? Or will it be based on the new 3d transistor technology. I ask as the new PoweVR 6 series by all accounts wont be ready? Judging by what they said at CES.

Quad-core processor on a tablet? My iPad 3 may be more powerful than Alienware laptops. Oh, isn't that the dream?

quad core ARM is different than quad core Intel/AMD in terms of capability.
the main reason ARM is used on mobile devices is the lower power consumption -as we all know.
another reason is that so many companies make money out of using ARM instead of just Intel.

We were discussing textbooks and Apple with my son who is away at school. He mentioned that if Apple can come up with such a great computer in Mac Air which is light and thin, it is only a matter of time for Apple to build a powerful computer in an iPad. He has a point.

An iPhone is held much closer to your face than an iPad, so a slightly reduced pixel density will be sufficient to deem it retina.

People really fell for that marketing gimmick, huh?

I agree. The interesting thing is, the difference between the iPad 2 to the iPad 3 appears to be even less than the difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S.

Huh? I'm sure the resolution will be better and that is a key feature for something that you look at. Also LTE connection will be important for some people. Considering the form factor really can't change much if you decide to keep the same screen size, I'm not sure how many other changes you would expect. Increased plugs and things like card readers are so ridiculously antiquated when the expectation should be that you are on an N level wifi network at home or the office, well I'm not sure why people are even suggesting crap like that.

anyway. i'm pretty sure i'm upgrading from my iPad 1. I suspect tablets won't be upgraded by consumers as often as cell phones, but they will be upgraded faster than desktops. From 1 to 3 should be a big increase for me.

At this point I can't agree with that. Of course, these are all rumours but a screen with four times as many pixels as the previous iPad? I see that as a huge upgrade.

Design? Rumours go it is the same, but only slightly thicker. In the end we might get a totally different design.

Camera upgrades: rumoured to be much better. As we expect it right now, the iPad will go from "terrible cameras" (iPad 2) to "good (/top notch) cameras". The iPhone 4S went from "good (/top notch) cameras" to "better back camera" - there's a difference. The iPhone 4 already had a great back camera. The iPad 2 doesn't have great cameras at all and is expected to get great cameras.

Im no design genius but with things like the iPad, its really difficult to change the design... I mean... its a screen

I hope they don't remain as stingy as they are with RAM and up the RAM to 2GB this time around. Everyone else has 1GB of RAM. That 512 RAM is old school and one always sees checkerboards while scrolling.

Design isn't about the front of the device only. It's also about the back. Heck, even if they changed from material (let's say from aluminium to liquid metal), than that would be a design change.

Count me on. My money is ready. Quad processor, I'll take any time of the day. Burn baby, burn.

I really doubt that people would consider the iPad 3 to have a design change if it looked exactly like the iPad 2 except for a different alloy used on the back.
