It's a computer, just not a PC.

Not a PC?! How exactly is it not a personal computer? A computer is a programmable machine that is capable of executing sequential arithmetic and/or logical operations. By that definition an iPad, and even the iPhone (and all modern smartphones in general), are computers. As for "personal", the iPad can be personalized to the owner's liking with apps and content (e.g. music, photos, videos, ebooks, etc..)

So, yes, the iPad is a personal computer. It's just a different form factor.

I want my my iPad 3 now! So you Foxconn kiddies better be putting in at least 90 hour weeks so Apple doesn't run out and people like me don't get pissed.

At least you put an honest spin on this. I've seen hypocrite posters here who lambast Apple over Foxconn, working hours, 24 hr days, etc, pretending they care with alligator tears, while at the same time incessantly posting their outrage about Apple 'artificially limiting' supply and their incompetence when they can't get their iProduct the second it's released. Believe it or not, you can't come out with a bleeding-edge product in quantities unheard of in this industry (ie. millions at launch-pretty much impossible for any other company) at competitive price points attempting to satisfy ridiculous demand while maintaining conditions that people would approve of.

there will be no retina with the ipad3. bloomberg never said retina. macrumors threw that in because well, whats a rumor without adding a little bs to it. it takes 300ppi to do retina according to mr jobs and the rumors on the ipad3 are holding steady at 256ppi.

Incorrect, "retina" display was called that for a reason - that an average human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels at normal viewing distance. Jobs himself said in the iPhone 4 keynote that it means that you cannot see individual pixels when you hold it up to a certain distance away from your eyes (the magic number for an iPhone being ~300ppi). Needless to say, one usually holds a tablet further away from their face, so ppi required to make it "retina" is lower (around 250ppi). Television displays are 1920x1080 (around 70ppi for 32 in) and yet one still can't distinguish individual pixels at normal viewing distance of ~8 ft.

Who cares if it will be 'retina' or not? You think 99.99% of people give a ****? 4X the current resolution will be incredible either way. They're not going to make it some odd resolution just to satisfy the 'retina' technicality.

I agree. Heck, even the mighty Jobs himself said that the iPad was a "tablet PC". :)

Considering the form factor really can't change much if you decide to keep the same screen size, I'm not sure how many other changes you would expect.

Siri.

Or something along those lines. The iPhone 4S wasn't marketed as an iPhone 4 slightly faster and with a slightly better camera - it was marketed as an iPhone 4 with a slightly better camera, slightly faster and the big novelty being Siri. I would expect the new iPad to not be just a slightly improved version of what came before, but also to add some new feature. Especially considering what others have mentioned - I doubt people are going to want to replace tablets yearly, while it's not uncommon to see people changing cell phones once per year.

To me a maximum of 2 times CPU speed improvement plus a GPU that's up to 7 times faster sure doesn't sound like a "slightly" faster. iPhone 4 could be said to be slightly faster than 3GS in terms of raw power but 4S was a big leap.

You make a good point. Another thing I would like to add to what you said is, if you look at previous iPad keynotes, Apple also revealed applications that would take advantage of the capabilities of the iPad.

With iPad 1 we saw the release of iWork for iPad. With iPad 2 it was iMovie & Garageband. There was a rumor swirling about a few months back about a version of Final Cut Pro for iOS. If iPad 3 has a quad-core CPU / GPU, maybe we'll see Apple releasing Pro version(s) of their apps for the iPad.

The fifth generation iPhone, iPhone 4S, was ánd is a disappointment. The sales may tell you otherwise, but compared to the iPhone 4 this was a very small upgrade.

Performance wise--- the 4S was a leap forward compared to the 4. Owning both and using the 4S for a month or so... going back to the 4 felt slow once you are used to the 'S' speeds.

PC DIY users do it all the time. They gut their PC chassis and put in a new mobo, cpu, RAM, etc. They might keep the storage and PSU... but over all its the same chassis and look; but completely different beast inside.

Apple has not updated their macbook, imac, pros form factor chassis every year; but they do updated the innards. The macbook pros/Airs went thunderbolt and Sandy Bridge.... huge leap forward.

With the 'S', webpages pop up faster, apps runs smoother, overall if you depend on it for work... much higher potential for your productivity to increase.

The looks/form/screen may be the only thing that was not changed, but to say there is no difference is like saying there is no difference in speed between a on Core 2 Duo and Sandy Bridge i5.

i dont notice much difference between my 4 and my 4S to be honest, in fact i only got the 4S cuz i wanted a white phone for a change. the damn camera shutter animation still takes forever to open. however typing in safari is less sluggish i have to admit. id rather have more ram ... but then again i never had to complain about the 4 speed either

+1 - Well said.

...And even then and with Siri, it wasn't an iPhone 5 - just an iPhone 4S. If the iPad 3 is just an iPhone 2 with less than the changes between the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S, why would it be called iPad 3, instead of iPad 2S? Consistency is a good thing.

It's not about the number of changes. It's about the significance of these changes. Siri, apparently, is huge but it's just software and it only works in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and France if I'm not mistaken. So as big as Siri is, it's not a selling point in almost all countries where Apple sells their iPhone 4S' devices.

Retina display, however, is huge. It's really new hardware. And everyone can use it: unlike Siri, everyone 'understands' pixels and 'speaks' touchscreen haha :)

Apple even said it themself: even if the onliest upgrade in the iPhone 4 was FaceTime, than this would still be the best upgrade ever (promotional video of Apple).

And everyone considers the retina display to be bigger...

Why all this axe grinding about what is and isn't retina? Who cares? It's rumored to be twice the resolution. Good enough for me.

Because it's Sunday, and there hasn't been a new rumor in two days for people to talk about on this site. That's how this one has over 400 comments. People just get bored over the weekend.

That said, of course 4x the pixels is gonna be gorgeous. The first thing I notice going from my iPhone 4S to my old 3G is all the pixels I can pick out with my eyes.

If it's a quad 1.0 or 1.2, what will be the major discernible difference between this iPad 3 and the dual 1.7 (albeit, i7) Air?

And since their major target for these *and the 13" MBPs* is commoners, who don't heavily game/post process... Apple is building up an incredible arsenal of not-quite pro equipment.

This throws the current Mac Minis, i5 iMacs, 13" MBPs, 11" + 13" Airs into the air of frivolity.

The iPad 3 should be a MBA that can run in iPad MODE - and have a simple docking station (the keyboard/extra battery/flash drive). It would replace the need for EVERYTHING except a power desktop... 20 months and counting.

Actually, having personally visited scores of factories in Foxconn's vicinity, I'd say this is all typical conservative American bs. Sure, there will be factories that cut corners and blatantly violate labor laws. But, at your typical 100+ employee factory, a "slow" workday is nowhere near 14 hours and neither working nor living conditions are inhumane. Uncomfortable at times, yes. Inhumane, no. Foxconn's dorms remind me of college dorms at lower-tier schools all throughout China. Again, uncomfortable, yes. Inhumane, no. Some people ought to keep in mind that this is a developing country we're talking about. Creature comforts we take for granted at home and at the office aren't available in China for low salaried factory workers in China. And then remember that the salary these people get paid is significantly higher than what they'd make back home in more rural areas.

Can't compare apples to oranges here. You want Chinese factory workers to enjoy the comforts of American life? Fine, but get ready to pay a nice hefty premium for your shiny Apple device, not to mention most of the other stuff in your house.

thanks for sharing your perspective related to my post.

Uh, ok. What happens when you want to use OSX away from the keyboard? Or the Flash Drive? Is there secondary storage? Thats gonna be expensive.

So scratch the seperate storage idea...and youre left with

That'll fly like a led Alienware.

How about a usb host?

It would be nice to connect other devices to the tablets.

My wife got mad at me because I didn't think there was a tablet suitable for replacing our laptop to store and display photos on while traveling overseas, taken by my SLR.

I can manage to power issues, but can't get past the connection issues. Maybe when a wireless camera is obtained...
