I don't think RAM is so important on the iPad because its doesn't use a HD so loading from storage into RAM is no way as bad as on a laptop. I'm not sure what the actual transfer speed is, perhaps someone here knows, but I'd around the speed of a SSD drive?

In case no one answered this yet, iPad and iPhone only have read/write speeds around 20MB/s.

I've used an iPad to edit video, and it's really good, and if the iPad got a REALLY good camera that shoots REALLY good video (which it doesn't, and even the 4S is okay at the most), then it would be more practical as a video camera, but like I said, if I see you just waving a tablet in the air I'm going to think you look dumb.

So, you think "just waving a tablet in the air" looks dumb ... but you also think an iPad with a great camera is practical? I think you might be straying from your message.

In the last couple months I've been to a wedding and large birthday party where an iPad was used to record video (and even coupled with a wireless "Soulo" microphone for interviews). No one said anything about the guys holding the iPad looking foolish.

Maybe because we were quickly able to watch portions of the events (that had already been edited in iMovie) on a screen larger than a phone ... and so the practicality you mentioned was very apparent, even with such a low-grade camera.

Or maybe because the people attending were ... nice people who aren't so easily bothered.

I have iPad 1, iPad 2, and probably getting iPad 3. I am also a photographer and the camera would be great to use when I don't have my dslr.

Good for you.

I bought iPad 1 about 1.5 years back for iOS development. Did buy iPad 2 for my dad but I've been using iPad 1 since. Must say that iOS 5.0 has destroyed it, the way iOS 4.1 destroyed iPhone 3G.

If the iPad 3 has a retina display, I'm buying it first hand, first day even if I need to stand in the goddamn line. Anyone who's experience iPhone 4/4S's screen must know how much important a retina display is for the iPad.

I like reading books on the iPad and I'm buying one just for this feature.

I still think the iPad is just a bigger iPhone since it uses the same UI as the iPhone. Android tablets used to be the same until Honeycomb came out. Now tablets have a better UI.

And this is why fandroids completely miss the point and why Apple just "gets it".

Thank you.

That said, I did enjoy the flat sides on the iPad 1.

I agree. That's the one thing I don't like about the iPad 2. The tapered edges make it difficult to insert the dock connector. I had sent feedback to Apple about that over a year ago. And so they tapered the iPad even more.

You know Google is consolidating their phone OS and tablet OS into one, right?

Ice Cream Sandwich will look and work the same on both tablets and phones... and every future Android release will too.

Does that make the Transformer Prime "just a big Galaxy Nexus" ?

----------

Then again, everybody thought Apple would release a full PC replacement, not a big iPod touch :D

I don't think any tablets that run a mobile OS (iOS, Android) can truly replace a full PC.

But that wasn't their intention anyway.

Macbook Air 13" has the same UI as a Macbook Air 11". Macbook Pro 15" has the same as Macbook Air/Macbook Pro 13". Macbook Pro 17" still has the same UI. Moreover, all iMacs have the same UI.

Your point?

There should be a feature called LocalCloud for this. The iPad opens a wifi network and the pictures (taken with your iPhone) will be synced locally rather than through the iCloud to the iPad. LocalPhotostream.

That's an awesome idea.

Just looking around that day at the dance competition... there were so many people using iPhones.

Local sharing of videos would be huge.

Actually he's right, and putting little :apple: smilies after your post doesnt make you look like an Apple fanboy at all

For a company like Apple who prides itself on innovation, the iPad UI is ancient when compared to other competing tablet operating systems.

Android and QNX are both far more advanced tablet operating systems, and its only in the app department that they are lacking in real quality.

Even if Apple dont redesign the UI etc for another 10 years, they still need to implement a true multitasking system. They also need to dump the physical button on the front. Clicking it twice just to switch an app is prehistoric in this day and age. Finger gestures and touch sensetive buttons are the way forward.

I've seen people using the back camera on their tablets every so often. Most recent example was another mom at my daughter's preschool who video conferenced the annual Christmas recital to her military husband who was off in Iraq. So her husband watched their son perform on the back camera and she got to see her husband's reaction on the front.

I'd just like to point out - the iPad would also look ridiculous as a phone. Making a call and using a camera are 2 separate things...
:D

What? Are you kidding me? Please don't defend iProducts to the point where it makes you try to pass a ridiculous argument. Of course phone and camera are 2 different things. But using the iPad as a camera looks a heck of a lot more ridiculous than using the Galaxy Note as a phone. The Galaxy Note is only slightly bigger than current phones. A bigger person can easily use this phone and not look awkward. The iPad on the other hand is MASSIVE flat rectangular device compared to your typical phone. NOBODY can use this as a camera in there hands and not look awkward.

While I agree that the iPad UI is a little dated (2 years since we first laid eyes on it)... you can't argue with its success.

50 million iPads sold to date... maybe Apple's motto is "if it ain't broke..."

BTW... aren't there are multi-touch gestures on the iPad? I thought I saw them.

We have seen the UI much longer than 2 years... IOS has been around way longer, lets face it the iPad version of IOS is nearly the same as the iPhone and iPod touch just with some extra added features due to screen res.

Its horribly dated now it also seems quite wasteful on such a large screen I wish it would give a little more customisation.

Yes... I know that... that's why I specifically said iPad UI.

While the "grid of icons" is the same... I do like how the iPad has dual-panes or a completely different layout between iPhone and iPad for certain things.

An OS is defined by more than just its app-launcher :)

"Android has A vibrant app ecosystem"

I agree. This it does have

"It has smooth operation.

The fit & finish of the OS and smoothness of the UI doesn't compare to iOS. The UI of Android is not as responsive and it tends to stutter & lag. Even Windows Phone 7.5 has a much more smooth UI compared to Android.

"It has Cases and Accessories."

Compared to the cases and accessories ecosystem of iOS / iDevices, it pales in comparison.

Don't forget that with Android, the newer, better tablet or phone will be released within a few days or weeks, at which time your tablet or phone will be absolutely forgotten and abandoned by the company that made it. You can forget about regular or timely updates, you can forget about new features, you can forget about your tablet becoming anything better than it already is, and you can be sure that whatever you bought will be outdated and obsolete within weeks or months. With an iPad, you get regular updates and new features. Not all of them because some of them are hardware dependent (like Siri), but you know Apple will not abandon its product. You know that Samsung or HTC or Motorola or Google will abandon whatever you bought, and very very soon. They always do.

also need to dump the physical button on the front. Clicking it twice just to switch an app is prehistoric in this day and age. Finger gestures and touch sensetive buttons are the way forward.

Considering how many iPhones and iPads apple has sold & only 1% of android users are on ICS which has the software buttons, you can hardly say that a button is 'prehistoric'. Also iPads have got multitouch gestures...
- 4 fingers up to get the multitasking bar
- 5 finger pinch to close an app
- 4 fingers left/right to quickly switch between apps.

So you might want to actually get your facts right before you comment and make yourself look like an idiot.

So your reason why Apple makes outdated products is because they have a physical button on the front?

Get a clue.

crying...

I am crying because I know will want one and that I can't afford one. I suppose I could hock the iPad 2 before the 3 comes out but even then I can't afford one :(:( Being a grown up sucks, paying a mortgage sucks but having a roof over my head rocks! Maybe a great fortune will fall into my lap w/in the next 3 weeks, then I could have it all!

Doubt the 8 mpx theory. Apple always upgrades cameras incrementally. Bet my house on it that if there is a camera upgrade which there probably is, it will be 3mp or 5mp at best. What would be the point of putting on a camera as good as the one on the iphone when very few people actually use the back camera on the iPad

The point would be to further position the iPad as a content creation device as opposed to simply having it being poo-pooed as simply a content consumption device. Shoot your 1080p HD video right on the iPad (that you already have with you) and then edit, splice and enhance it into a finished product with iMovie wherever you may be, at any time, all without the intervention of a Mac or PC. Also, complete your project without needing to carry three or four different devices around with you to get the job done. Remember, Apple is all about keeping with Steve Job's vision of the iPad and iPhone becoming completely independent "post PC devices" - the new mobile computers of the future.

You have to think about the big picture. (pun intended!)

I'm not sure about this, but 7 fingers pinch should result in an explosion, while the 8 fingers+4 left up-up left actually help relieving stress.

There's no labeling below the Apple because it is laser etched after the iPad is assembled and tested.

The housing taper may be increased to disguise the fact that the iPad may be thicker than the current design (based on those crazy rumors). Tapering the edges makes it feel thinner than it really is.

Once thing about iPads. Economies of scale add up quickly. If Apple is selling 1 million of these a week, they can all have the HiDPI displays and none of this iPad HD crap for higher cost. I bet the $499 model will be quad-res.
