For a company like Apple who prides itself on innovation, the iPad UI is ancient when compared to other competing tablet operating systems.

Android and QNX are both far more advanced tablet operating systems, and its only in the app department that they are lacking in real quality.

An OS is defined by more than just its app-launcher :)

Thank you Michael. I can't believe how many people confuse the app launcher/desktop metaphor with the actual "UI". Just like how so many confuse task-switcher with "multi tasking" (they are two very different things!)

What Android did is trying to bring the mobile OS closer to the "ancient" desktop metaphor used ever since Mac. This might be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your views, but it's not really any more modern than iOS' way of doing things. In fact it's older.

At this point, it looks like Apple won't budge from this idea. The desktop is now for launching apps and you do your things through apps. They won't take the old way of making everything available on the "desktop." I still think they need to do something to sort out the file system alternative but I doubt Apple will suddenly start throwing things onto the iOS springboard. Maybe they'll use the notification center for those?

Mountain lion. When it's released with its integrated iCloud file system, which functions just like the iOS app/folder system. It'll be free, and it will further lock you into the Apple ecosystem, which luckily is better than the alternatives.

I am crying because I know will want one and that I can't afford one. I suppose I could hock the iPad 2 before the 3 comes out but even then I can't afford one :(:( Being a grown up sucks, paying a mortgage sucks but having a roof over my head rocks! Maybe a great fortune will fall into my lap w/in the next 3 weeks, then I could have it all!

sell your ipad 2...buy apple stock...get ipad 3...your welcome...(unless apples stock tanks) buy playbook ;-)

Doubt the 8 mpx theory. Apple always upgrades cameras incrementally. Bet my house on it that if there is a camera upgrade which there probably is, it will be 3mp or 5mp at best. What would be the point of putting on a camera as good as the one on the iphone when very few people actually use the back camera on the iPad

It's cheaper to use the one, that is already made than just get new camera just because it cant be the same like on iPhone.

If true, what will be reason to get iPad4? It will only be thinner with no improvement. iPad4 seems will be silly upgrade, but iPad3 seems to be amazing update.

:apple::rolleyes:

I hope not, because I'd like to see quad core CPU and retina together and also 1GB ram, ... current iPad 2 is getting sluggish or it's just that I have more than 100 day's uptime.

It is going to be Spec game!

After iPad2 Apple clearly knew it is going to be spec game. To me iPad2 is an end product meets most of the tablet requirements. Anything above will be seen as Spec oriented. Retina display is ok, but Quad Core plus 8 MP camera does not make great sense for a tablet.

I will be really surprised if they keep the same price points. I am expecting the iPad2 to continue as the consumer model and this iPad3 to be a Pro model or the like.

Either that or LCD prices have plummeted in that space.

I don't think they are going to balkanize the iPad line into something like a pro and a consumer line. Too many choices beyond color, capacity, and 3G just seem to muddy the water for consumers.

I wouldn't be surprised if price points are kept.

I also wouldn't be surprised if a 16GB iPad 2 becomes $399 and the next generation iPad starts at 32GB and $599.

Really intrigued to see the latest rumours and things seem to be gathering pace. After getting the iPad 2 on launch last year I would love to do the same with the 3 (offload the 2 to a family member). The display will obviosuly been the main selling point, although updated cameras would be cool, I can honestly say I have never used the rear one, though the idea of using it as a video camera then editing in iMovie is very appealing. However I would be very nervous about dropping it, the smart case would almost be useless in preventing a smash!!! Would anyone else like to see the back case as all white / black depending on model? - only a small thing but would be nice. Don't mind the back of the 2, but all white would be sweet! In relation to 4g / lte really not fussed as it isn't really available in the UK yet and after having a 3g model would be tempted just to get WiFi. All-in all excited to see what's in store, can't be long now until the March launch is confirmed...?

8mp

8MP camera is THE major selling point for lot of amateur photographers who use all these wonderful apps to massage their photos and publish them on social networks. I would buy it without a moment of hesitation. Without 8MP - don't know. I wonder if there is a poll of reasons people would get iPad3.

That's sad

My point was pretty clear. You didn't really have one. Care to expand on why seeing your pictures clearly before taking them is sad? It's not a 5d or anything for sure. But for day to day stuff, it's more convenient to grab you iPad/phone than to lug around your dslr, so it's kinda "nice" not sad that these devices are getting better and better, no? Perhaps you rather they focus their efforts on some other aspect?

Are you telling me that you're going to use the iPad as a camera? I haven't seen anyone using it as a camera, because it would look extremely awkward, and rather <twratish>.

Can't be too far off now. Can't wait for the announcement to come so I can get to work and start taking calls from customers wanting to know when the iPad 4 is coming out...

EDIT

I really am interested in seeing what resolution the FRONT camera is. If they've managed to sneak in a HD camera like in the new MBPs and iMacs then this will be a great video conferencing machine - especially with a multi-user version of FaceTime.

I don't care much about the camera's as I use it as a mobile web device, and dont think people are looking to take amazing images to grace the cover of Time with an iPad.

Having said that, I would love to see stereo speakers, as I watch movies on my iPad 2 when I commute to work, or spend time in Europe.

I love my iPad, but would NOT upgrade until it has a bsic feature that should be standard at this point on Mac products.

I'd like to see an official Apple stylus.

Something I can sketch with on a small scale.

You know you're waiting for an official Apple version of Windows.

It's standard on Macs because they're thicker.

A side note. I saw someone using an iPad 2 to take photos at a concert and (no offense) I thought he looked weird doing it. I agree with the sentiment that on a device such as this, perhaps more effort should be put into the front camera for HD FaceTime.

8MP and ART

Well, I'll be using camera as an initial point for landscape digital paintings and 8MP is much-much better then .97MP. Holding iPad to make a picture looks just as awkward as painting on iPad, have you ever seen a crowd assembled behind every landscape painter watching an artist in amazement?

Haven't you been reading the news lately? Retina is happening.
No, I haven't read anything I classify as news about retina displays.

I have read a lot of wishingful thinking, conjecture and rumors. No news.

Lots of fans dreaming abut the ultimate device. No news.

Pictures of a possible screen that might be used, but no hard evidence that Apple is purchasing them in quantity. Discussion of high reolution pictures in book covers. So what, not really a strong clue.

No news!

Yes, I would like a retina display, but I don't see it happening. Not with the state of the current manufacturing processes, and the current yield percentage of defect free screens. Not at a price point that is affordable. Not with a battery life that is reasonable. Not without an unfavorable amount of heat generation.

Looking at how much heat my laptop puts out driving a 1920x1080 screen during gaming, I can't see passive heat removal in an ipad being sufficent. I will take the current resolution ipad, since it is not going to burn my lap while running a game.

Talk like this of pie-in-the-sky hopes of a multi-generational leap are going to make alot of would-be purchasers upset following the (rumored) launch next month. Just like what happened with the last iphone release. Remember all the"news" about the iphone 5 last year? all of which was fake? All the upset people who thought they would get to buy a whole new form factor?

I hope I am wrong. Regardless, I will buy the next ipad, and so will you.

wanna make a 100 dollar bet that the ipad 3 will have a retina display?

Can't deny the retina display and 8MP camera will heavily interest me but after having an iPad 2 and not using it at all (sold it after 2 weeks actually) I don't think i'll invest in one of these. Will decide for sure closer to the time though.
